“The honeymooners!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2004

Spent one week there 8/29-9/6. Our bathroom shower had sand upon arrival but after contacted the desk it was taken care of within a 1/2 hour. Housekeeping was constantly eager to clean our room. It definitely needs a update but not a horrible place to stay when on a budget. Don't eat at the RL, the bar lounge is slow on service and prices are high for drinks. Breakfast buffet is overpriced. Great Beach and Luau was good. The hotel is close to Lahania and there are lots of great places to eat. I also recommend a trip to wailea to the four seasons, Spago is there and is by far the best food and service you will ever have. We recommend aTrilogy trip(they are on Lahainaluna St) for a day trip to Lanai (breakfast and lunch included)snorkeling and van trip, we had a great time.

Top location but please update your rooms. I don't know when this hotel was built but frankly, stop spending money on the landscaping and fix the facilities now. There are so many new hotels going up in the area, as we speak and this place looks like a 1950's country club. I think the room fitting are coming back into fashion! Yes we paid for a standard room but this often tells you what the hotel really thinks of it clients. The bathroom was the worst aspect of the room but to the credit of the hotel, as soon as I advised them of the maintenance needs of the room, they fixed ASAP ie, ligh bulbs needed replacing, the door lock was almost off it's hinge, the sink was blocking up and the safe stopped working on our last night at the hotel. The beach is wonderful and the location is superb.

As some previous reviewers have written, you certainly can't beat this hotel for location. What a stunning sunset!. Can't fault the service of the staff, or the general hotel facilites. My wife and I had a garden view room on the ground floor of the Royal Hale building. The room was clean, and a good size, but was in need of some TLC (a coat of paint, peeling plaster, handrails in the bathroom that kept falling off). Requests to fix minor issues like the catch on the outside french door when reported to management were actioned promptly. I really feel that management could spend a bit of cash on giving the older rooms a coat of paint and a bit of a spruce up, particularly when newer hotels and condo's are being built nearby. Great luau, deadly Mai Tais!

Was very worried about staying at the Royal Lahaina after reading these trip reports. Although it is an older property, we found it clean and comfortable. The staff was courteous & helpful. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

My wife and I were welcomed by the most accomodating staff, complete with smiles and great hospitality. We loved our oceanfront room and the view was spectacular. We enjoyed and relished the moments of our stay at this establishment. This was our first anniversary together and we couldn't have picked a more suitable place to stay. The only negative was "running out" of food during dinner. We had dinner at the Terrace Lounge and and came to find out that all the fresh fish was gone.

We stayed three nights in September 2004, in a delux partial ocean view room in the tower, floor 9. We got a special rate through expedia for $112 a night. The view was fabulous, and you could hear the waves crashing in. The hotel could use a little upgrading, maybe new furniture. The room was decent, but I noticed the bathroom had some mildew in the tiles, and I didn't care for the shower curtain odor. The bathroom doors are the kind that slide, and it was hard to slide back and forth. The carpet and chairs in the room were a bit worn too. If you are not a neat freak than you will probably be less bothered by it. Also if you are a light sleeper that needs absolute, complete silence, the air conditioning makes an annoying humming sound. We tried turning off the air and opening the balcony window, and the waves were very loud too. It seems to be amplified when you are on the ninth floor.
The best part about the hotel is the location. The beach is beautiful, and sandy and does not have rocks. Because of the lack of coral and rocks, there are not too many fish swimming around. We took walks along the beach at sunset and in the morning. It was absolutely beautiful and romantic.
The service was very responsive and courteous. Every time we requested something to be brought to our room, it took no more than five minutes. The activity counter was very helpful and reliable. I purchased surf lessons at Maui Waveriders through the hotel. I had the best time. If you want to learn to surf, I highly recommend them.
The food was not too good at the hotel. We had the breakfast buffet for $13 each, and was not worth it. My husband compared it to camp food. We ate dinner at the restaurant downstairs once and it was only so so. Maybe we should have tried Basil Tomatoes.
The hotel provides a free shuttle to Whalers Village. You can also take the bus to Lahaina for $1 each way. It was very convenient.

Our prior trip to Maui was to the Grand Wailea for our Honeymoon so I was curious to find out what lay in store for us at this Hotel. Needless to say we were very pleasantly surprised. This Hotel represents great value for money. We took the breakfast and rental car package and it turned out to be a really good deal. Following a prior traveller's advice we asked for rooms on the higher floors. Ours was an ocean view room on the 11th floor which might as well have been ocean front for the view that we had. The room was spacious and clean. This is simply an older hotel that has been well used but maintained well. No frills though they do have two pools and a decent restaurant. Note that they have a Luau every evening at 5:30 so if you plan on sleeping at that time don't count on it. We were rarely in the hotel for the duration of the Luau so the sound did not bother us.
