“Great beach and restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

We stayed here in a 2 bedroom unit with a beautiful ocean view. The room was very large and spacious. We ate and drank at the hotel restaurant and was always very happy. The Mai Tai's were fabulous. There was an area to borrow books, games, and puzzles. The beach was sand and clean.
Would go here again....

Thank you for visiting Sands of Kahana. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Our beautiful two-bedroom suites offer 1,500 square feet of living space and breathtaking ocean views. The Terrace Restaurant is a great place to grab a quick bite or relax during happy hour (or any time) with a delicious adult beverage. One of the great things about our resort is the convenient access to the beach, which is just outside our door. Thank you for sharing your comments. We hope to see you again soon.

Very clean units and great activities. The happy hour has great mai tais and the pool is right there. Very friendly staff. I moved units as my garden view was a parking lot view. The bigger units like 2 and three bedrooms have more of a chance of having an ocean view. I had a peak of the ocean. My ten year old son loved it here and also my 50 year old brother. The beach was great!

Aloha, Cheryl Avocado! Thank you for your generous rating. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. It was our pleasure to move you to a room with a more pleasing view. We agree the Pacific Ocean is preferable to a parking lot. We are able to accommodate room requests based on availability. It is good to know our resort staff demonstrated plenty of Aloha spirit and that your son and brother enjoyed their stay. We hope you will consider us again on your next visit to Maui.

We were first timers in MAUI and to the Hawaiian islands to be exact...The hotel staff made sure that our needs were being met...Our room was located in the first floors and a few feet away from the ocean water...It was an amazing experience to lay down on your bed and listening to the lovely sound of ocean waves that mixed within our dreams as we sleep...The villa we stayed is spacious and with an excellent view...With a rental car, every place is an easy drive anywhere in the island...Maui is a beautiful place...If you just want to relax and take it easy then this is the place to visit...

Room Tip: If sound of ocean waves does not bother you then stay on the first floors...

Thank you for visiting Sands of Kahana. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Our resort staff was happy to make sure all your needs were met. We couldn’t agree more: There is nothing better than falling asleep to the soothing sound of ocean waves. They are much more effective than any over-the-counter insomnia medication you can find. We are also famous for our breathtaking ocean views. Between the sound of the waves and the view of the ocean you can’t go wrong! We offer plenty of peace and quiet here in West Maui but are an easy 15-minute drive to Lahaina and an array of retail and dining choices. Thank you for sharing your comments. We hope to see you again soon.

First trip to maui. Stayed in three bedroom with my family (myself and my husband and 3 kids) and my parents. My parents are not owners here, but did reserve the unit by trading a week through their timeshare agency. We were in building 1 on the second floor. The unit is large as all the reviewers have mentioned. When asked for oceanfront it was communicated you must be an owner to be in buildings 2 or 3. We did have a nice view of the ocean from the main lanai in front of the unit, the rest of the rooms looked out over the parking lot.

It was also very LOUD and HOT. Since the design of the buildings have the middle courtyard and tile floors pretty much everywhere the sound just bounces around. If you have kids that need to nap during the day it might be tricky. We also found the lack of AC to be an issue, 3 nights we went to bed hot, which is never fun. Yes, the winds are great - but it didn't really fully cool down until past midnight. The staff is pretty noisy in the hallways - we also had the fire alarm go off on two different days, both midday and they started construction on one of the bathrooms by the pool so again it was very loud during the day - lots of power tools. Also had a pipe burst in our building so did not have water for short time that day. It also seemed like they had landscapers there daily cutting the grass and using the blowers. If you were in a unit higher up you probably would not even notice the noise from that particular activity.

The inside of our unit was fine - plenty of soap for the washer - large kitchen well stocked with supplies. It is a little run down - the chairs on our balcony broke while we were there and we had to stick a towel under the table leg so the table didn't rock around. The handle in our shower literally came off in our hand when turning it on.. still functioned..just needs some TLC. The beds were in rough shape too...one of the full size beds practically sank down to the floor when you sat on it - and we are not overweight people! We had friends staying on 7 and they got stuck in the elevator twice for about 10 minutes each time. We opted for the stairs given we were just on the second floor.

The beach was really nice and they have chairs, umbrellas, coolers etc right there to rent, so that was great. Kids pool was fun - our kids loved it and the adult pool is fine too. One annoying thing is you can't take drinks from the restaurant to the pool - but we just stocked our cooler so it wasn't a big deal but definitely would have enjoyed more of the happy hour if we could take it out of the restaurant.

The restaurant is decent - I would say its on par with applebee's... we ate dinner there twice out of sheer convenience but there are definitely many more great places close by.

All that being said, for the price - not sure you can beat it anywhere else on maui - we paid 1k for a week for a 3 bedroom - VERY cheap in my book. If you plan on not being in your room during the day it would be totally fine - the noise just got frustrating when it continued day after day! Don't plan on any leisurely afternoon naps for you either. :) The heat will depend on the weather obviously. We had all the fans on high and all the windows open, even the few that didn't have screens and kept the shades closed during the day and still found it hot.

The staff was pretty friendly - some people were great and very nice and others not so much.

Room Tip: higher the floor the better, but this will be out of your control.

Thank you for visiting Sands of Kahana. Our spacious three-bedroom unit, at 2,000 square feet, is ideal for extended stays with large traveling parties. The ocean view it looks out on from the lanai is spectacular. Just to clarify, you do not have to be an owner to stay in a specific room or building. We are sorry that was communicated to you. We also apologize for the noise. Some of it, such as that emanating from landscaping equipment and housekeeping, goes hand-in-hand with our daily operation and cannot be avoided. We will remind our housekeepers to keep the volume down so they Do Not Disturb. In regard to the tile, it is a matter of weather dictating our flooring choice. As an open-air resort, we had to opt for a resilient surface that could withstand the elements, which is the reason we don’t have carpet. It would admittedly work more harmoniously with our housekeeping carts to dampen wheel-generated clatter.

Our natural air conditioning, also known as the ocean breeze, is usually sufficient to keep our rooms cool and comfortable. We are sorry that wasn’t your experience and apologize for the inconvenience. We are glad you enjoyed our convenient access to the beach, which is just outside our door. Thank you for pointing out the in-room maintenance issues. We replace mattresses on an as-needed basis and are quick to make repairs once a problem is identified. The Terrace Restaurant is run by a third party whose liquor license extends only to the boundaries of the restaurant, preventing the transportation of alcoholic beverages to the pool. Thank you for sharing your comments. We appreciate the feedback and hope you will consider us again on your next visit to Maui.

This was our first trip to Maui. We are RCI owners. Despite making numerous calls ahead of time, we were not given an ocean view unit, nor given the opportunity to switch to one during our stay, despite more than ample evidence that such rooms were available. Our view was out over a parking lot and a burned out hotel next door - lovely. The unit was clean, but dated. The kitchen and bath really needed updating and the tile floors were all chipped. The ceiling fan in the bedroom didn't work (especially a problem with no A/C) and we had to call three times before anyone came to look at it (one person said "I'll have to ask my manager if we can do anything" - really?!!?!). The parking stalls in the garage were extremely tight - anything larger than a compact car needed to take up 2 spaces. All of the towels had SOK hand-written on them with a Sharpee - pretty tacky. There was no WiFi in the unit without a charge - which is not something we've encountered in other properties. There was a smoker very near to us and we could smell the cigarette smoke all the time - very annoying. And the quiet hours (9pm - 9am) were not well enforced. Lots of noise from other guests in the stairwell at all hours of the day and night, housekeeping staff calling to each other early in the morning, and the lawn mower and edgers going by 8am.

On the positive end, the unit was quite clean - even the lanai. The staff was pleasant and friendly. Little things like dish soap in the kitchen (in addition to soap for the dishwasher) and laundry soap being available were much appreciated. The mid-week change of linens, etc. was very nice. There were lots of towels, including beach towels, which was wonderful. The grounds were very nice and the pool and beach areas well maintained.

One thing we learned was that most of the things to do (Mt. Haleakala, Road to Hana, winery, goat farm, sugar museum, lavender farm, etc.) were all a good 45+ minute drive away, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.

We would probably go back if we ever returned to Maui, but only if a room with a view could be guaranteed - especially for RCI owners.

Full disclosure, I am an owner here. Been to Maui, over 6 times and have now stayed at the Sands the last 3 visits. Been in the 1 bedroom, and recently in the 2 bedroom. The Sands is not a fancy resort, with big pools and busy lobby. What the Sands is though, is a great, quiet vacation spot, with your own special beach. The 2 bedroom ocean front, was a spectacular view to wake up too every morning. This place never disappoints except, keep in mind that they do have rooms that don't have great views. Hopefully as an owner, I won't be put into one. They have a great deal to rent chairs, coolers, and boogy boards, on the premise. You can also rent paddle boards, snorkel equipment and kayaks. Very reasonably priced. Very impressed with the staff, they clean their grills daily, and clean the pool, jacuzzi every day. They even empty out the jacuzzi! One glitch, the 3 times I attempted to play tennis, they were re-painting the courts. Advice 1: Leave one open for your guests! They looked great when I checked out!! Anyway, continue to work hard in keeping this the best kept secret west side of Maui, see you next year! Advice 2: Went to the timeshare presentation, where they were trying to sell me RCI...first guy Ron, polite and very well spoken, 2nd guy closer, was a pain in the A@@! No means No....especially me being an owner, a little respect please. Mahalo...

Aloha! Thank you for visiting Sands of Kahana once again. We appreciate your ownership and are truly happy you choose to spend your valuable vacation time with us. You are so right about our world famous ocean views. They are spectacular. We certainly understand why you would want an unimpeded view every visit and are happy to accommodate room requests if we have the availability. Please indicate a preference for an ocean front view on your next reservation.

We are sorry you didn’t get the chance to play tennis and will keep your excellent suggestion in mind on the occasion of our next repaving project. All our representatives are enthusiastic about the RCI brand and would like you to have the most exchange opportunities possible. We apologize for the excessive zeal. Thank you for sharing your comments and your continued ownership. We appreciate the feedback and are looking forward to seeing you again soon.

We have travelled to Maui four times and are going again for a fifth time this November. We have stayed at the Sands of Kahana every vacation. The rooms are spacious and the staff are very accommodating. We have stayed in building 1 and 4 but have never had the opportunity to be ocean front which is disappointing. The corner units are great and the space in the 2 bedroom units is bigger than my house. The units are well stocked with towels, beach towels, laundry soap, and a full kitchen. The units are not air conditioned but you don't need it with the breeze off the ocean. The grounds are well maintained and the beach is great. I love enjoying happy hour by the pool. It is close to Lahaina and local restaurants and bars. We like the Times grocery store and felt safe enough to let our teenagers go to McDonald's at night on their own. If you are looking for your room to be cleaned everyday this is not the place for you but they do come in half way through your stay and gather garbage and bring new towels. The Sands of Kahana has a concierge and can book all of your activites. Brad is great. Boss Frog's, across the street, is a good place to rent all of your snorke and beach equipment. There is wifi in the lobby for those who need their technology right next to the koi pond. For the amount of time you actually spend in your room, Sands of Kahana will serve your needs and more.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner unit if you can get it as it has to lanais.

After reading your review, moeking, we think you’re the one who is fabulous. Five visits must be some kind of record, and even if it isn’t, we couldn’t be happier you have chosen to spend your vacations with us. Our two-bedroom / two-bath suites, at 1500 square feet, are indeed as large as or larger than some homes. They sleep six and come with a full kitchen. Please ask for an ocean front on your next visit. We will make sure to note it in your reservation. Although we can’t guarantee specific units, we can accommodate requests based on availability. Thank you for sharing your comments. We appreciate your loyalty and look forward to seeing you again soon.
