“We loved the hospitality and the awesome location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

We really liked the Napili Surf Beach Resort for the wonderful facility, the gorgeous location, the fantastic Napili sunsets and most of all the ultra-pleasant hospitality. General manager Scott Ullrich and Shannon, the night shift manager go out of their way to ensure you have a fun relaxing stay. We stayed here 4 nights Sep. 10th-14th basically to extend a vacation we had already planned at a condo in Kihei.

I will start this review by saying what this place is not. It is not a super fancy expensive all-inclusive resort that you overpay for facilities you are unlikely to use nor is it a loud place with lots of nightlife activities but where you will be bothered by noisy people partying at all hours of the night. Likewise it doesn’t have an onsite golf course nor onsite 5-star dining. If that is what you want, Maui offers lots of other fine establishments catering to that. Instead, what you will find here is a very comfortable clean and friendly facility that provides everything you need to enjoy a beachside Hawaii vacation at prices that do not break your budget. At Napili Surf, you are staying on one of the west-side’s most beautiful beaches without all of the crowds of Kannapali or the expense of Kapalua. You have the choice of an ocean-facing condo or a less expensive garden-facing one, which is where we stayed. Ours was a simple studio setup but many have one or more bedrooms. We liked the peaceful environment of the garden wing and the quieter secluded pool right outside our room. It met our needs very well, especially considering that we were out and about enjoying the activities like boat trips, snorkeling, hiking and sightseeing but still having significant beach time each day. The nearby BBQ setups near each building were clean and worked well and were very handy to avoid kitchen clean-ups the nights we stayed in.

Again I’ll reiterate, the friendly aloha attitude from hosts Scott and Shannon really made the stay great. On more than one occasion they helped guide us to good west-side locations. They also provided several onsite activities that typically aren’t included elsewhere. One evening guests were invited to a unique Polynesian dance show held on the lawn that instead of being the same old luau show was all done by a dance group that included young adults, teenagers and children of all ages right down to a 4-yr old boy who was really into it. Scott hosted the show from an open bar where he served up excellent Mai-Tais and local beers from the Maui Brewing Co. This was followed by an optional yummy BBQ dinner cooked and served onsite by staff from the neighboring Iron Emu restaurant. Another day, overlooking the beach they served a great breakfast of local Hawaiian baked goods and fresh Maui coffee. We especially liked the coconut-macaroon dumplings and the Hawaiian corn-bread French toast served with fresh pineapple jam. Other days we had great Hawaiian style breakfasts at the Gazebo oceanfront restaurant which is just a 5-minute walk from your room. There are other weekly activities held onsite for guests as well - My wife was upset that we would miss the Monday yoga session held on the grounds - something we will plan for next time.

Concluding this review, although we found Napili Surf almost by accident, I would have no problem basing my entire Maui vacation around it and I strongly recommend it to others looking for this type of place. We all know Hawaiian vacations can get pricey. Staying here affordably allows you to stay at a wonderful peaceful beachfront location while leaving enough cash for the daily activities you come to Hawaii for in the first place.

We have been going go Maui for 25 years, staying in Kihei....but always drove to the west side for excellent snorkeling & beaches. 2013 we chose Napili Surf Beach Resort, and we're thrilled with our decision. Very clean rooms well appointed, with daily maid service. Weekly events provided by the staff of Napili Surf. Beautiful grounds with fresh herbs and a huge variety of blooming plants..The best part is the beautiful ocean views, sugar beach, clear waters with lots of fish and some turtles! Other ;-D ...no cell phone use on lanai's and no air conditioning so you can hear the ocean waves. Ceiling fans were plenty and it was unusually hot (90) a few days.

Room Tip: There are 4 buildings, 3 offer ocean views, one is a garden view within a 2 min walk to beach. Webs...

We are staying at Napili Surf and could not be more pleased. Beautiful location, room is great (has everything we need in the kitchen), small and friendly. Listening to the waves Iull us to sleep is awesome. So glad we picked this place.

We went for our 30th anniversary at the end of August, and was booked into one room. Upon arrival, we were upgraded to the front condo. I can't say enough about the accommodations. They were top rated. We had a one bedroom suite for 8 days. Absolutely everything was perfect. Staff was helpful and friendly. Mark the handyman/pool guy had morning conversations daily with my husband about pool cleaning, restaurant recommendations and the drive to Hana. The beach was just a short walk down the steps, and you could bring the lounge chairs down between the trees. Renting snorkel equipment and swimming with the turtles in the beautiful surf was absolutely amazing. The lack of a/c did not factor into our stay as there was ample breeze off the ocean plus the ceiling fans. We never experienced any ants in our room. As for not having shampoo, as has been written, it's not your typical resort. We enjoyed the fresh pineapple, the Mai Tai Wednesday and I also did sunrise yoga on the lawn. Yes, the price was a little steep, but so was all the other resorts we looked at before booking Napili Surf. It had the best location to the beach, and that was important to me.

Room Tip: We were in room 101.

We stayed for four nights mid-September in a garden-view suite (the cheaper ones, not facing the ocean). Everything was perfect:
- Huge room with balcony.
- The kitchen was better than our kitchen at home! Huge fridge, oven, stove, dishwasher, bajillion spices. I wish they stocked some more basics -- oil, sugar, mayo, ketchup -- you know, the stuff that you buy once and lasts six months.
- Great WiFi coverage. In resorts like this I often rely on my 3G more than the WiFi because of the coverage. Not here.
- Right on the most beautiful beach I've seen in Maui. Since we had a car we tried to browse for other beaches "for a change", but we couldn't find anything that matches the sunny, relatively uncrowded beach and calm waters of Napili.
- Smaller gestures by the wonderful hosts: fresh pineapple at check-in (yum!), a road to hana disc, guidance and patience answering our endless questions.
- Only 15m from Lahaina, for all the restaurants and shops.
- Very affordable price!

All in all, perfect! The only thing I regret is that we only spent four nights. Would return in a heartbeat.

I have not stayed anywhere else in Maui, nor would I want to.
Pros:
Location - perfect perfect location, right on Napili Bay, the best bit of Maui.
Gardens - the gardens are really well maintained, very pretty and a great place to relax in the afternoon or whenever you're done with the beach. We had an Ocean View Studio our view was lovely.
Kitchen - very well equipped kitchen, apparently the one in our room was refurbished in 2009 but I have seen other reviews complaining of the kitchen being dated. I did look and the microwave was manufactured in 2001, but it still did the job. We didn't have any issues with anything not working. They have all the cookware you need, plenty of utensils, lots of spices, a dishwasher and a big fridge freezer. I don't think we lacked for anything in that sense whilst we were there.
Maid service - we liked the housekeeping people and thought they did a good job.
No air con - I list this as a pro because if you have air con, you are paying for it and Maui looked ridiculously expensive enough to us without air con, nevermind with. We didn't need air con, we managed with the ceiling fan (which is essential) and the breeze. The sun was also never directly on our condo, I think the 1 bed Ocean View rooms might get it a bit in the morning but either way, we didn't find the lack of air con uncomfortable enough for it to impact us.
Staff - always seemed helpful when we had stuff to ask them. We had a nice bouquet of flowers, a bottle of champagne and the all important cut and wrapped Hawaiian Pineapple in the fridge waiting for us, which we appreciated.
Peace - generally, it was really peaceful. The garden that separates you from the beach can only be used by guests and we found it to be quiet in itself, as well as allowing for the beach noise to get drowned out by wind or waves, so we were very happy with this. It's slightly annoying when people group together on the patios below and decide to talk really loudly when you're trying to have a quite meal but it could be worse. They do have a quiet time here as well, which again, is we liked.

Cons:
Can't think of a major con. Oh, if we left food out or dirty plates and stuff in the dishwasher, ants would start to congregate. In fairness, before I even mentioned it to them they had already scheduled Pest Control for the entire site, which I think is a regular thing so sounds like they are aware and are taking action. We didn't have an issue as long as we left dirty plates in the sink until ready to use the dishwasher and we made sure food was put away in cupboards.

The bay is amazingly brilliant and because of the condo type accommodations around it, it's less busy than the other beaches with loads of hotels on the shoreline. The other aspect is the cost, I think Napili Surf is not cheap but I looked at other places on Napili and they were a fair bit more expensive, I'm sure you must get something in return for the extra money but I thought Napili Surf was the best balance of cost and benefits.

We'd definitely stay here again and probably request the same room as the whole experience was wonderful and we felt very much at home.

This place is not a five star worthy hotel. Four at the most. We did not receive any shampoo or conditioner which I found odd considering the fully stocked kitchen that even includes Saran Wrap. The grounds are ok. I think many of the five star reviews are likely from people staying in ocean front or ocean view rooms. In a garden view room, we are finding a complete lack of air flow on the top floor. We have all of the windows and doors open, but no breeze. Obviously they can't control the weather, but I mention it because there's no air conditioning. I think you really need to take the breeze into account when booking your room or you will not sleep well. The mattress and pillows are also not great. We signed up for a king bed but got a queen. On the plus side, the room is large and the staff is great. They have sand mats available and water noodles to use for free which is nice. I don't think its five star worthy, but its not a bad place to stay at all. If we come back, I would get a different room and make sure it's a king bed. Many places don't have air conditioning in Hawaii.

Dear iscrm4iscrm,

Thank you so much for staying with us at Napili Surf. We appreciate the time you took to share your impressions with us. Let me touch on a couple of the points you made in your thoughtful post.

We feel one of the magical things about a Hawaiian vacation is the sound of the ocean and our gentle trade winds. Neither one can be enjoyed with air conditioning. True, we do occasionally have periods of time when the trades are absent; but that's the exception and not the rule. I am sorry that your vacation coincided with one of them. We'd be happy to assist you select the perfect unit when you plan your next visit. Please mention your preferences on breezes and any other aspects when you call.

Unlike the kitchen supplies, shampoo etc. are a very personal preferences. Because of waste we were experiencing and our observation of guest's preference of bringing their own, we eliminated the practice of providing it. However, upon request, we can provide bathroom amenities.

As you may know from our website, each unit is individually owned and furnished, so we are limited in providing king beds. We are on a program for owners to provide king beds.

Lastly, mahalo (thank you) for your kind comments about our staff. Through the years, many of our guest have become like family to us. We hope you will too! They are truly the reason for our five star reviews.

A Hui Hou (until we meet again),
