“Absolutely beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

We stayed in unit #914 and can't imagine staying anywhere else. The view is spectacular and this one bedroom unit is obviously recently redecorated in the most beautifully elegant manner and yet furnished so comfortably. Initially we were concerned about being on the 9th floor but the elevators are speedy and silent, and waking up that first morning and seeing whale spouts from our bed was simply amazing. We brought binoculars and watched whales cavorting right in front of us while eating our breakfast on our totally private lanai.

The kitchen is fully furnished with new, high-quality appliances, and all the dinnerware and cookware one generally might need. We shopped at Costco and Safeway, but also at the nearby Times Market. We ate most of our meals in the condo because it was just so beautiful - the sunrises, the sunsets, the rainbows, the rain clouds hovering over Lanai and Molokai. There are barbecues below, a pleasant place to enjoy the beautiful garden flowers, the towering canopy of trees, the birds singing and the perfect 80 degree temperatures, while watching for one's Mahi Mahi to barbeque.

This unit is furnished with a washer and dryer, lots of hangers and drawer space! The hall closet even contained paddle-boards and a cooler to take off for a day at the beach. Beach towels are available at the pool.

The entire facility is so well maintained and located right on the beach. Walking through the parking lot, one can reach the boardwalk that extends along the waterfront just behind the sand and walk to nearby restaurants. The sandy beach out front extends all the way to Black Rock. Just 200 yards to the south is a great swimming beach.

There wasn't anything I can imagine that could have been better. Our stay in unit #914 at the Mahana felt like a little bit of heaven. Truly a paradise.

Room Tip: Pull the see-through shades between 3 pm - 5 pm, to reduce sun glare.

Aloha and mahalo for your great review of the Aston Mahana. I would be hard pressed to ask for more as everything you touched on is exaclty what we want all of our guest to experience here at the property.
Unit 914 and all of the units in the Aston rental program here have the features you've mentioned and of course every unit here at the Mahana provides the same spectacular views.
We are truly excited to hear that we were able to provide great service to you and have you leave with such wonderful memories.
We hope we can host you again in the near future.

great condo/hotel setting. I loved the views the whole back wall of the condo is made up of floor to ceiling windows and the views are outstanding. I loved the fact that our condo was well maintained with comfy furniture and granite countertops, everything you would need was available from kitchen appliances to beach equipment like umbrellas and lunge chairs, even foam coolers. There was a medium sized pool and a hot tub that were well maintained and cleaned and really not very frequented so plenty of room for us to lounge, I think I may know why there weren't all that many people out when we went down to the pool... the wind in the evening. We had our 1 year old with us and being in the pool around 6 pm was a bit too cold, and at times the winds were so strong that it would blow my novel off the lounge chair. it was windy every night but not always as strong. It's not a reason not to go but it has been one that has so far deterred us from returning to this part of Maui. Also the beach right in front of the hotel is not swimmable as there are very large rock outcrops but there is a beach nearby that is large (kanapalli beach) with restrooms. Also be aware that this side of Maui does not have the white fine sandy beaches the sand here is more coarse and red not as fun for the kiddos to play in. We now tend to go to the south side where it seems that the winds are stronger between 11-1 in the day and much more calm in the evening. I do like this are of town due to it's closeness to downtown Lahaina and Whalers village.

Aloha and mahalo for taking the time to give us your comments on your recent stay at the Aston Mahana. We are sorry you found the winds to be a bit strong at times however the year round breezes here on the northern end of Kaanapali are welcomed as they keep us cooler during the summer and fall months. During the winter season, when we the temperatures are a little cooler (relatively speaking as we're still not dropping below 70 degrees) these breezes can be a little stronger.
Despite this, as you found out, this side of the island features some of the best views in the world and during the winter season the additional benefits of the humpback whales hanging out in the waters just off our property.
We were very happy to hear that you enjoyed our well-maintained, clean and comfortable unit which is or goal for all of our guests and the full kitchen we have in all of our units as well.
We very much hope you do come back to the Aston Mahana where we offer both a quieter and private location yet are still conveniently located by both walking or by car to all of the shopping and dining areas in Kapalua, central Kaanapali or Lahaina.
Hope to see you soon and mahalo for your feedback.

We stayed in room 1013 this was high up and far above the palms for great view of ocean. We would recommend to all our friends. Saying that our friend don't have kids. This is not a kids condo, go next door for them and all he kiddie pools etc. Stayed a week only regret we could not stay 3 months. This was a premier studio and strongly suggest you go for the premier room.

Room Tip: ask for high room above trees.

Aloha and mahalo for the "outstanding" review of your recent stay at the Mahana. We are excited to hear that you loved your view and can assure all of our potential guests that they feel the same from whatever unit they are at on this property, no matter the floor as all units are oceanfront.
While you are correct that we don't have the large "resorty" type of pool area, we believe that with our inventory of clean and comfortable units, all with full kitchens, in the studio, one bedroom and two bedroom categories that we can meet the needs of any family group whether it's a couple or a family with children.
Our pool area with jacuzzi tub also features complimentary gas grills and of course you are steps away from the ocean and the second to none views of the neighboring islands of Molokai and Lanai, spectacular sunsets and wide array of marine life.
We very much hope you can return again soon for a longer stay.

Mahalo for taking the time to provide your feedback.

2nd time back in 2 years with our teenagers....love the condos, proximity to beaches, restaurants and when eating in when we pick up fresh fish from The Fish Market, you have access to spotless state of the art BBQ's. Beds are very comfy and we watch the whales and turtles from our lanai. Would come 2 x per year if we could! WIFI in the units works great to keep connected.

Aloha and mahalo for the great review, we're very happy to hear that you and your entire family enjoyed the service of our staff and your unit here at the Aston Mahana. We do hope your teenagers enjoyed their time at the pool area with jacuzzi tub and that you all could relax and use the complimentary gas grills at the pool or the full kitchen we have in all the units here. Washers and dryers are in all units as well and we hope that made things easier for you too.
As you mentioned as well, it's easy to stay in touch, should you choose, with the complimentary wi-fi in each unit and with our great location on the quieter Northern end of Kaanapali beach you can all rewind but should you choose we are a short walk or drive to many dining and shopping options.
We do very much hope you can achieve your goal and make it twice a year so we hope to see you again before Christmas.
Mahalo for taking the time to provide your comments.

we will return to the mahana. it was amazing. we stayed in #1216 and can't say enough about it. we booked thru vrbo and everything was perfect. we travel a bit and can say that these owners have thought of everything. the view was outstanding. whales and turtles every morning and evening. it had all amenities needed. not only will we be back but we will stay in 1216 on top floor again. the mahana is quiet on the beach and has a lawn area for sun bathing that is perfect when the afternoon breeze comes in. we walked along beach and paved path. close to whalers village. walked to dukes for dinner. we are 150% satisfied. you shouldn't stay anywhere else.

Room Tip: stay as high as possible the views pay for themselves 1216 was amazing.the huge floor to ceiling win...

My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon, and can't describe what an amazing experience we had!!! We had a slightly upgraded "premium" studio on the 5th floor. I have no words for how amazing the view is. Views of the islands of Lana'i and Moloka'i peppered by the property's tall palm trees, which I did not find to be an obstruction to the view that some reviewers have mentioned when staying on lower floors. The sea is literally 10 meters from the property. From our lanai/balcony, we could see numerous gigantic green sea turtles (or "honu" in hawaiian) floating and swimming in the surf just meters from shore. As we were visiting during the official start of whale season, we were lucky enough to see humpback whales from the lanai several times, including one full breach!!! One early morning, a gigantic female Hawaiian Monk Seal swam ashore in front of the property and rested for the better part of the day on the sand (she was roped off by conservationists not long after beaching as a large crowd was gathered).

The resort is tucked away from the main road, which is a plus. Staff is very friendly all around. Our room was very clean, and you could tell that much of the unit had been updated, including bathroom and kitchen. Only the carpet in the sleeping area looked like it hadn't been replaced in many years. There is an Expedia Local Expert on site to help you book activities. The pool is small, but clean and kept up well. However, I didn't spend one minute poolside in 12 days. I often wondered why anyone would come to Hawaii and sit poolside when the beach is just steps away. No restaurants, but there is a shopping center right across the street from the property entrance with several food choices and a supermarket. The landscaping on the property is immaculate.

The name of the resort is a tad misleading as it is not really located at Ka'anapali. Black Rock, which is the traditional northern barrier of Ka'anapali, is a 25 minute walk south. In terms of the beachfront, it is very small as the property extends almost to the sea. Nobody lays out on the beach in front of the property, as there is really only room for foot traffic of people strolling the beach. Swimming and snorkeling in front of the property is not really a viable option either, as the shore is all lava rock and reef. During low tide, the lava rock is clearly visible. However, a 200 meter walk in either direction will take you to appropriate snorkeling, swimming, and tanning spots. Kahekili Beach (or Airport Beach to the locals) is about a 10 minute walk southward, and has amazing sand, snorkeling, and scuba diving opportunities. If you stay here in the winter, be prepared to deal with the afternoon trade winds. Like clockwork, they start whipping up around lunchtime and can make some beach days a bit unbearable.

We would recommend staying here to anyone who has a desire to visit the beautiful island of Maui. Aloha!

Aloha and first of all congratulations on the recent nuptials and we're very honored that we were able to host your honeymoon. We completely agree that there is not only no better view on Maui but probably not too many like this anywhere in the world. Your description captures it better than I could.
We're exceptionally pleased to hear of your description of the friendly service and clean and comfortable unit as that is our goal for all of our guests, we want every guest to go home with the same memorable experience you had.
We are on the more relaxed Northern end of Kaanapali beach and as you mentioned about a 25 minute walk away from the "downtown" area of Kaanapali. There are many dining and shopping options however within walking distance or a short drive away and that's if you even need to leave the property where we have full kitchens in every unit and at our pool/jacuzzi area there are complimentary gas grills as well.
We very much hope that you can return again to see us real soon.

Like you are doing now…I read reviews for MONTHS before we decided on our hotel in Maui. I am very surprised by the numerous 5 star reviews recently for this property. I wish I could report the same experience.

We choose this hotel based mainly on the view and it did not disappoint in this category! The view is by far the ONLY reason to stay at this hotel. The rooms are truly right next to the ocean and the view is amazing. I give the hotel 5 stars for the view.

A phone call was made the morning of our arrival to the hotel to confirm our rooms. We were told we would have 2 rooms next to each other, overlooking the pool, as we had requested. When we arrived, the assigned rooms were next to each other which was great, but the view was at the opposite end of the pool. This wasn't a big deal but surprising because it wasn't what we were told earlier the same day.

The gal at check in was much less than friendly. When we arrived (excited for our stay) our entire party felt as if we were bothering her rather than welcomed for our stay. Enough so that all of us mentioned it to each other. She wasn't outright "rude" but was cold and "matter of fact".

One of the rooms was beautiful - #417. The rest of our party was in #419 which is a 2 bedroom. The room itself had the "upgrades" - granite countertops/stainless steel appliances/etc but furnishing and decor was somewhat dated but acceptable. The shower in one of the rooms was broken and there was a window propped open on the deck that the lock was damaged and couldn't be shut. This concerned me with a 5 year old which could fall out of the window but we made sure he wasn't on the deck alone. Some of the reviews state the view is blocked on some of the lower floors but our view from the 4th floor was not blocked at all.

After traveling all day, we decided to stay at our hotel for the first evening. We had 3 kids in our party - Age 5 to 10. We were all in the pool area about 8pm when we started noticing a large number of people arriving to the pool area. They were pulling up chairs, passing out candy and popcorn. One of the guys even gave our table candy for the kids. They started setting up a movie screen right next to the pool. I jokingly asked if it was Kareoke night. The man replied, "No, we are going to play WII bowling". We were curious and thought maybe the hotel hosted movie nights so we hung around. The movie started with a sex scene in a shower and at least 10 F bombs in the first minute. This was NOT a family flick! We packed up quickly and went to the front desk to return our towels. A security employee was next to the front desk and we asked why the movie was being played. He replied, "You should have seen the movie they played last week!" Implying this was acceptable! We returned to our room and I called our Travel Agent. I was concerned we should change hotels since this didn't seem like the right hotel for our family for the next 7 nights. Since this was late Sunday night, there really wasn't much she could do until the next day.

Monday we waited to hear what our options were. The hotel has a 2 night cancellation policy and since we had already spent a considerable amount of money for the vacation, we were hopeful we would not have any additional expenses. The Manager, Brian, was off site until later that day. Our Travel Agent told me to speak with Rose to see what our options were. We were out for the day so when we returned and went to the desk to talk to Rose, Brian was also available. Rose asked why we had not reported our concerns in our room. I stated due to the "movie" incident we had not reported issues because we were fairly sure we would change hotels. While speaking to Rose about the issues, Brian asked for more information about the movie but that was the only item he asked about. He seemed surprised about the movie incident so I don't think this is a regular occurrence. They are lucky our group was easy going but we were still shocked this occurred. If anyone would have said any warning, we would have left. Rose wrote down the issues with the room and set up an appointment time to have them corrected the next day, which occurred on schedule. Brian didn’t seem to want to get involved in the conversation but luckily Rose was willing to take charge and try to work things out.

They did not have any other rooms available until the next day so we agreed to stay the second night and view the rooms the next day. Room 1209 was available which we loved. It was beautiful and exactly what we were expecting based on the reviews of the "premium" rooms. We did not have any issues in this room. It was great!

For the remainder of our stay, our group experienced various "moods" from the desk staff. Karen was by far the most helpful and kind. Unfortunately since we had complained and caused a "stink" we didn't feel very welcome for the remainder of the week. We limited contacting the desk except for towels which was the only option. We just weren't sure what to expect.

The ocean in front of this hotel was better than expected. There is coral but still room for young kids to play in the sand. The hotel pool and hot tub are very basic but were fine for our kid’s needs. The buildings block most of the pool during the day so you have to move around to get sun but this is also a plus if it’s windy. If you want a "family friendly" hotel, I would suggest the neighboring properties. This hotel had very few kids and some of the guests (which I assumed were owners) didn't appreciate kids playing in the pool.

Concierge was pleasant but didn’t know anything about the PGA tournament scheduled while we were there. The schedule had changed to weather but she had no idea what was going on. We were able to find out the new schedule on line quickly. Since Maui is a big golf destination, I would except they would keep current on golf events?

We highly considered VRBO but decided to book directly with the hotel based on the reviews about changing rooms. I viewed 4 rooms during our stay and they greatly varied. If you can book through VRBO and see the pictures/reviews, hopefully you will not be disappointed.

I greatly dislike complaining at hotels but the movie was the "last straw". I believe my review is very fair to the hotel and likely more kind than the other members in our party may post. I read many of the positive reviews which I believe may be from owners or VRBO renters.

Aloha and mahalo for taking the time to post your comments on your recent stay. As you mentioned almost all of the reviews we receive for the Aston Mahana are very positive and it is our goal to make sure that every guest goes home with fond memories of their stay and having received the Aloha Spirit from the entire staff here.
We are glad that your family was able to experience the world class views from all of the units you stayed and that our on-site maintenance staff addressed the issues you had right away. We do apologize if you don't feel like you were welcomed properly and that the issue at the pool was not taken care of right away.
Yes, it was an isolated incident, and the owner here at the property who had set up the movie showing for his wedding group even apologized that the content of the movie was a bit racier than they had thought.
Here at the Aston Mahana, being located on the quieter Northern end of Kaanapali, we love to provide our guests a little bit more of a private and relaxing place to enjoy their vacations. While our pool area is not the spread out "resort" style, our guests find it very relaxing and comfortable with jacuzzi tub and complimentary gas grills.
We have studio, one bedroom and two bedroom two bath units here which give our guests many options and all are spacious and include full kitchens and of course every unit has the breathtaking oceanfront views from which you see abundant marine life and sunsets between the neighboring islands of Molokai and Lanai. We certainly feel that we have many options and will be very welcoming for any type of family group.
While almost all of our reviews from our guests are glowingly positive we do appreciate you expressing your concerns here as that is how we can make improvements where needed and make sure all of our guests are more than satisfied in the future.
We do hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay here at the Aston Mahana and hope you'll give us another chance in the near future.

Mahalo, Brian
