“Great for the family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

This was my first trip to Maui and it did not lack anything. We went for a little over a week with our six grandkids and their folks. The beach was fun and the food was outstanding. We will return next year as well ,just the two of us.

There are so many great condo resorts in Maui it's hard to know which one to choose, but the Ka'anapali Alii was perfect for our family of four, including two teens. We stayed in a one bedroom, two bath, with the den was converted into a second bedroom. The condo itself is very spacious with a large lanai; ours had a mainly mountain view but also a view of the ocean from the one side of the lanai. The kitchen is large and has all the utensils you need to cook simple meals. Daily maid service is great, and the staff for the most part was fantastic, addressing any concerns immediately and following up several times to make sure everything was fine. Paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, shampoo, soap, and even laundry detergent is provided.

The grounds, pools, hot tubs, and BBQ area are beautiful and kept immaculately clean. While perhaps not as elaborate or fancy as other complexes, they are upscale. The Ali'i seemed to have many more BBQs and a larger eating area than the other resorts we visited. The complex provides paper plates, paper towels, cups, plastic utensils and BBQ equipment (tongs, etc.) During the high season, the have Master Chefs to give you tips; unfortunately we missed out on that by going in Sept. The beach at the Ali'i is fantastic and getting chairs both at the beach and at the pools was never a problem. They provide beach towels.

One of the things we liked best is that, despite encompassing four multi-storied buildings, it felt intimate and uncrowded. We went to visit my sister at the Westin Villas one day and also walked thru several other resorts, and they felt very crowded and frenetic. I couldn't wait to get back to the peace of the Ali'i.

We did have a few issues that marred our experience just slightly. First, the Westin next door was doing renovations. Our lanai faced this work and while I realize the Ali'i has no control over that, a warning or reduction in price would have been nice as we couldn't really enjoy our lanai as the work went on from 6:30 - 7am in the morning till 5 pm almost every day. The condo abutting ours also was having renovation work - we were given written notice of it when we checked in. They did try to mitigate the effects by having the work only between 10 - 2 just a few days each week, but again, notice and price reduction would have been nice.

Lastly, we used the concierge - but just once. He was very obnoxious, very pushy about everything. I did not want to deal with him, and actually got a quote from a different staff member for a snorkel trip to Molokini. It was the same price as booking on-line, but we thought it would be nice to have someone else do the work for us. When I called to have the other person book the trip, this particular person answered. I asked for the other, and he put me on hold for a bit, then came back and said she was at lunch but had told him what I wanted. He gave me the final price, which seemed a bit high, but I did book it. When we picked up the tickets and receipt, it did not detail the breakdown of the price, and he had booked it as two separate parties of two people. My DH questioned him and he said the company required it that way, and that the higher price was due to taxes. Later, I saw him and he again said about the taxes. I remarked that HI must have very high taxes and what was the rate. He said 4%, but that the trip also had a fuel surcharge and departure tax from the harbor, like it does at the airport. When we checked in for the trip, the captain was very puzzled as to how it was booked and at the price. Later, we found out that the price on the website (and what i had been originally quoted) including the departure tax and the only add-on should have been the fuel tax of $5 pp. We felt very ripped off by this person. I went back several times to question him but he was never in, and I did not want to spend the rest of our trip stewing about it. We used the concierge at my sister's hotel for the rest of our activities, who did not charge a penny more than the published price.

I would stay at the Ali'i again in a heartbeat, but would not use the concierge.

If you love Maui you will fall in love with this wonderful condo property in the heart of Kaanapali.
Whether you are a young family of four or honeymooning for your 20h anniversary or hosting the children and grandchildren for a special occasion-this is the place. Two wonderful swimming pools, two hot spas, tennis courts, steps to the beach, a short walk to shopping and fabulous restos. Each unit is beautifully decorated with comfortable beds and pillows. Kitchens are completely equipped with everything you might need- coffee pots, blenders, etc. Each unit has an outside space. I LOVE this resort!

Room Tip: If it is in your budget- book a room with an ocean view

We stayed at the Alii last year in 2012 and loved the complex and condo so much we returned this year. We stayed in a 1 bedroom condo this year (sleeps 4). Home away from home... But ours was more luxurious!!, These are expensive condos but are huge, fully equipped with everything you could want, serviced daily, fabulous and very helpful staff!

Room Tip: We had a partial sea view- so you get a view of surf beach and mountain

The entrance and lobby did not generate much confidence, but when we opened the door to our condo, everyone went "WOW".

Two bedrooms plus a Queen bed in the "office" gave us plenty of room for a family of six. Our condo was beautifully furnished with everything you need for a super comfortable stay.

The Alii is nestled in the middle of resort row in Lahiana. This is a Resort!! On the left was the Marriott and to the right was the Hyatt? where the Whaler's Village Shopping Mall was located. After walking along the manicured beach path and looking at all the properties, I was so grateful my husband choose the Alii.

The Alii has no restaurants or bars which keeps the noise and activity factor low. The Starbucks is an easy morning walk next door. The good news is the staff all shout out Aloha to you as you pay 45% more for your latte. All the hotels have restaurants along the water's edge so there is plenty of choice, although we choose not to go to any of them. Lahaina is a ten minute drive. The Safeway does a fabulous business there.

The Alii has beautiful pools which are great for kids - and it is filled with families. Around 6pm, groups merge on the BBQ area and the tables are filled with families and friends sharing a drink, enjoying the sunset and being together.

The beach is really fantastic and perfect - again - for kids. All the water sports - paddle boarding, wake boarding, surfing, snorkeling, dinner cruises and paragliding all happen just off the shore. It is SUPER easy to book a class or just rent a snorkel and fins.

I loved it.

The only complaint our kids had was the waves were too small for surfing.

Room Tip: If you want to see the sunset, ask for the 6th floor or above. Otherwise the pool cabana blocks the...

My wife and I stayed here in August. We travelled there after stays in Kauai and Honolulu so the notion of eating some home cooked meals and doing some laundry were appealing to us.

The Alii will offer you suites with laundry, full kitchens and some living space all the while still have some wonderful luxury amenities.

Aside from the spacious suites, we enjoyed using the fitness centre. The fitness is huge with a stretch/yoga room, plenty of free weights, cardio machines and weight training machines. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the facility.

There were 4 tennis courts and the were rarely crowded. No issue getting a court for a match.

There are two pools, they are lovely. One pool is larger and they try to encourage the children to play in that pool. There is a quieter pool that they try and restrict for adults by calling it the "quiet pool".

Another nice touch was a sheltered area by the pools where they had couches and chairs with two large tv's. When we were there they had ESPN or CNN on, it was nice to get out of the sun for a bit without heading back up to the room.
We really enjoyed the bbq's. They had nine bbq's in the pool area that the staff kept very clean and equipped with starters, thongs, flippers etc. It does get a little busy at dinner time but will you be able to grill your meat in a short time, never a wait for a grill at lunch. There are a couple of grocery stores (Safeway) about a 5-10 minute drive away where you will be able to purchase fresh fruit, meat any grocery you need.

The concierge by the pool was super knowledgable of the activities available in Maui. She offered us plenty of options and was not simply pushing one company on you for a snorkel tour or Luau.
The only issue you might have is you do not get the hotel feel when arriving at the Alii. When we arrived at the hotel was quick, efficient check-in. You will not find a grand or luxurious lobby but it was not important to us. The hotel has plenty of substance and the flashy lobby was not necessary. We were escorted to our room with a very helpful bell man that showed us around the grounds and the suite.

The hotel is right on the beach and there is a boardwalk. We enjoyed going for a walk to the nearby hotels/restaurants. There is a also a shopping village, more like an outdoor mall, also on the boardwalk.

I would most highly recommend this hotel. It was perfect for us as we needed to cook some meal for ourselves and enjoyed doing some laundry as we were away for three weeks but were still able to enjoy all the luxuries of a finer hotel.

Room Tip: Ocean View room was worth the extra dollars for us. We enjoyed the balcony and gorgeous sunset views...
