“Avoid at all costs!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2005

Made reservations over 6 months in advance and advised that we were coming for our honeymoon. We booked an ocean sideview room with a king sized bed in the Dolphin Building and requested a second floor unit if possible. Upon arriving, we were informed that the owners of these units were occupying them and that all that was available were first story units further back from the ocean. When we requested something a little closer to the ocean we were essentially advised that this was the best they had. After reluctantly accepting the keys, we were apprised of the various fees for use of the safe, phone and parking lot and a fire and brimstone speech about the perils of losing the rationed out beach towels. Upon entering the very small, narrow and dated unit that resembled a college dorm room, my wife was startled by a colony of ants parading around the counter top and the overpowering stench of animals in what was apparently a pet friendly unit.
I was additionally bowled over by the intense heat and the fact that our "king sized" bed was a queen sized Murphy bed that you had to pull out of the wall. To the front desk's credit, after calling the front desk regarding the non functioning air conditioning and insect problem, they sent staff quite quickly to remedy the problem. The gentleman who fixed the A/C problem advised that the A/C mechanism connected to the lanai sliding doors had been disconnected (no doubt by the greedy and lazy owners)and proceeded to fix it. The staff who came to remedy the bug problem merely sprayed the entire counter surface (where we would presumably cook our meals) with Raid and left without cleaning the dead ants off the counter. Although, a non smoking room I found it ironic that the owners would be so intolerant of tobacco smoke and yet allow the stench of animal urine and fur to permeate their "home". I would not have minded the non functioning A/C as I realize this is the tropics, however, my wife and I are both allergic and asthmatic and required some ventilation and relief from the animal smells. Regarding the ants, sorry folks. There's no excuse for this in light of the money we paid for the room. If I didn't mind bugs, I'd go camping. I've spent many vacations in the tropics and have never had to contend with bugs. Also, upon examining the bottoms of our bare feet, we observed them to be black with filth and whatever dirt had been left by housekeeping. After calling the desk again to please assist us with finding a cleaner unit for us, they advised that they "may have another similar unit tomorrow" but could not make any promises. This was not what we wanted to hear. The following day, after a sleepless night in the small uncomfortable bed, sub par breakfast at that glorified greasy spoon Castaways and a dip in the paint chipped swimming pool, we decided to call our travel agent to clarify the terms of our booking agreement. Mercifully, the agent advised us that we were only paid up for one of the 7 nights at this place. Looking at the clock, we saw that we had only a half hour to gather our luggage and check out of this God forsaken place. Prior to doing so, I consulted the Maui Revealed book (the Blue Bible) and decided to call Kahana Village a mile up the road (see my review for this "Real Gem"). Manager Vicki Betts was an absoute angel of mercy and offered us a beautiful two bedroom condo on the beach for approximately $20 less per night than MKV.
Do yourselves a favor folks, stay away from this persnickety, flea bitten nickel and dime flop house and don't listen to the hype which is probably written by MKV condo owners. If it were possible to give a 0, I would.

No frills kind of place. Nothing special. If you're on a budget and just happy to be in Hawai'i, then this might be a good place for you. The staff was friendly. They upgraded us to a beachfront room because our room was not available (the people in our room decided to stay longer). Pool was fine. Beach was nice but no place to sit. Just spread a towel on the sand. You can rent a cabana also. Did not eat on the premises or ordered any drinks. The place was clean. We liked having the kitchen and the dining area to prepare our own breakfast and making our own coffee. They do give you at least a morning's worth of coffee to get you through the first morning until you can get to the local supermarket (which opens late for those people landing late). We had no complaints but we knew what we were getting into when we booked there. If you're looking for a fancy place with attentive staff and with a more luxurious feel, this is not the place.

The first problem we had with this place was the unfriendly staff, which we encountered for the first time upon check-in. We were also a little nonplussed to be slapped with a variety of fees which they had failed to apprise us of when we booked our stay with them (parking, phone {whether you use it or not}, safe, etc...). When we got to our room, we found it dingy and run-down. There were live spiders and a dead roach, an uncomfortable bed, and visible dirt in the living area, kitchen, and bathroom. We also found that they had not given us the honeymoon upgrade that we had been promised when we booked the trip. To make matters worse, the room had a window that was open to the outdoors and only covered by some wooden slats which were broken in places, allowing anyone from the outside to see and hear what was going on inside. We called the front desk to report all of this and were told unsympathetically that nothing could be done and we'd have to stay where we were. Nothing was done to try and resolve any of our issues. Trying to make the best of the situation, we carefully rearranged the furniture and hung a blanket over the window the allow ourselves a little more privacy. The next day when the maid came by, she told us we weren't allowed to have the blanket over the window, despite the fact that the wooden slats were broken. We continued to encounter unfriendly staff for the duration of our stay, with the exception of the guy who worked at the rental shack on the beach. Whenever we needed beach towels or other service, we frequently had to wait for extended periods of time and finally wave down someone to help us out. At check-out, we were given a "scrapbook" and a dvd. The "scrapbook" was a Barbie pamphlet complete with mazes and cut-out postcard ("kids, be sure and get an adult to help you with this!"). The dvd didn't work. This place is a joke. Please don't stay here. There are many wonderful places on Maui to stay, but this isn't one of them! I'd recommend checking out the Embassy Resort.

This was our first trip to Maui. The first room we stayed in was a bit run down and not very clean. We spoke to the staff, they upgraded our room to a little more updated room. The room still could of used a few more updates. Anyway, as for the staff, they are awesome. They were very friendly and accomodating! Also, the grounds are kept very clean and are just beautiful. The location of the hotel was also great. You can do some great snorkeling just off the shoreline just to the north of the hotel! We had a great time, and would probably choose this hotel again because of location and staff. Also, the restaurant had great food at a reasonable price!

I don’t know how much I spent on Lava-Flows during my week stay, but it wasn’t enough. Loved the drink. Loved the property. There was a reef about 70 yards to the north which was great for snorkeling. I found the staff to be friendly, as well as the guests. The kitchens saved me a bundle, vs. dining out every night. We used the on-site laundry facilities, which we found very convenient. If you want to check your email, they have 2 computers on site. You will have to buy online time in the form of an access card. They have a mini-mart on site, which my daughter frequented often. They offered scuba lessons in the pool area, but we did not sign up for them. The bed in our unit was a little uncomfortable, so my wife had maintenance deliver a roll-away on day #2, and she slept well for the remainder. The property is close to Lahaina, and we drove there every day. Just to the south is the Royal Lahina Luau. If you walk the beach after dark, you can sneak up the path and enjoy the show. Make sure to bring a couple of drinks with you. There are tennis courts on the Royal Lahaina property. We were quoted $40 for a day’s pass, which included equipment.

If you must stay in West Maui. This is a good choice. Quieter and cheaper than the other Kaanapali resourts. The north side of Black Rock has a nice beach with good snorklling. Much quiter at night. Nice Pool, Resturant. Well cared for grounds. Not the newest or sexyist place. But great deal for the money.

We had anxiously been awaiting our vacation in Maui. I had booked a one bedroom condo with 2 queen beds...well needless to say we got a "room change!" Whoaaaaaaaa! Whatta room! It was gorgeous with a view of both the ocean and the mountains...atop the 6th floor with a lanai that we could have hosted a party of 20 guests.
The staff was cordial, helpful and the grounds were lovely. The restaurant had delicious food at a very fair price. Actually it was the best food we had on the island! (steak and ribs were fabulous....my fish taco was outstanding!)
If any of you have the opportunity to rent room 611...do it! It's a return visit we will take again soon!
