We had a ground level, one bedroom suite which opened up to the inner courtyard almost right across from the pool side restaurant. This was awesome and super convenient for our kids; they just walked out on the lanai and on to the huge grassy hotel grounds where they could hop on over to the pool or beach, look for geckos and frogs in the bushes or pet the cats that seem to live there. Our suite was very comfortable and plenty big enough for our family of five and I loved having a washer and drier. The restaurant is decent and we were given a $100 credit there when we booked. True, the pools are much smaller and less elaborate than some fancier hotels (check out my photos and review of the Westin) but my kids had a great time in them just the same. Housekeeping service was spotty but we were out so much enjoying ourselves that we didn't care. Very quiet at night except for the rattling air conditioner but it wasn't that big of a deal. Gorgeous grounds and lobby, great little store on the main floor.
I highly recommend you attend the free breakfast/information session in the lobby put on by Expedia once a week. We learned a lot about the island from the presentation and got some very good deals on excursions by a very knowledgeable booking agent.
A couple of things I didn't like about the hotel:
- you are charged $6 a day or thereabouts for the safe in your room even if you don't use it. What's with that? Many hotels provide this for free.
- they also charge $9 a day to park your car there which is also crazy. The Westin lets you park for free or will have the valet do it for that price.
- the beach at the hotel is not the best. The waves are quite rough, there is a bit of a dangerous shorebreak, and there is lots of sharp coral right under the surface. Too rough to snorkel and too much coral for boogie boarding. We tried to do both several times and finally gave up when my son cut his foot badly on some coral. There are so many great beaches nearby that I recommend you go elsewhere (DT Fleming for boogie boarding/surfing or Honolua bay, Black Rock, Turtle Arches, or Napili Bay for snorkeling for example).
Another word of caution: unless you are very interested in buying a time share, do not get sucked into going to the presentation even if they offer $100 off on your excursions. We caved and went to the timeshare thing; BIG mistake. The first thing the guy said was that it wasn't a high pressure sales pitch and that he would accept no as graciously as yes. Well, we sat there for the required 90 minutes and said no, and as soon as that happened the guy got annoyed and called over his boss and she tried to get us to sign on. When we still said no, they both got quite rude and accusatory and it all ended badly with us marching out and them not even saying thank you or good bye. I guess this is what all those time share presentations are like but we hadn't been to one for a long time. We learned our lesson. It is not worth your 90 minutes or the $100 credit, especially when there are so many other things you want to do with your time when you are on the beautifuly island of Maui.
