We love Hono Koa and bought two oceanfront Koa weeks to use every year. We tend to get unit 301 each visit, but I am hoping for 401 next time we come, which is very soon.
We have friends who own at Hono Koa, also a Koa unit, and they told us how great their views were, and when we visited the resort while staying at Gardens at West Maui, where we owned, and asked to see the views and units, the nice woman at the time was very obliging and took us to see several empty units. We were awestruck by the beautiful view from the Koa unit, sixty feet at most from the water. We had to buy!
We miss Tom from the main office, who retired about a year ago, but Jim is also very nice. We just acquired our second week over the last year, and now we will have two glorious weeks at Hono Koa annually. We sit on the lanai all day, and we enjoy the sunsets at night. Whale activity at this time of year is the best reason to own oceanfront, and of all of the resorts on Maui, there are none that can boast a better view than Hono Koa oceanfront units.
The staff is wonderful, and the housekeeping is superb at Hono Koa. I have yet to see a mouse or a bug in our unit, and even if I did, I would not blame the resort because people are careless and leave doors open. If you are careful about closing your door, the person before you may not have been as careful.
I would love to see better living room furniture that is more comfortable, but that is the only negative about the furnishings. I would love to go to an HOA meeting and tell the board about the sectional furniture at Maui Lea, which is so comfortable and still goes with the Hawaiian decor. It would be nice to be able to relax in the evenings on a nice sectional where we can put our feet up. The Koa units have tons of unused space in the living area and could easily accommodate a large sectional.
We enjoy so many restaurants on Maui after going so many years now, but I do love Kimo's in downtown Lahaina. The fish and chips are the best, and a close second is Leilani's in Whaler's Village. We will go to Kimo's at least four times during our two-week trips. Other restaurants pale in comparison, and don't even bother with some of the supposed specialty burger joints. You can grill great burgers at Hono Koa and forget those $10 burgers with no flavor.
Times Market is great and very near Hono Koa. We watch for sales and remember our cloth bags to shop in the store. We also stop at Costco while in Kahului or Wailea.
In the summer, Hono Koa does have access to the water, and you can swim with turtles. It's one of the best things about Hono Koa, seeing turtles right in front of the resort. At times there are five or six turtles sitting on the rocks in the water, just resting, If you go in the summer, the snorkeling is pretty good right there, so no need to drive elsewhere.
Every sunset is fabulous from the lanai, facing directly west. The colors are just gorgeous, and last year, we watched a pod of whales swimming north, and as they went by, the mothers demonstrated fin slapping and jumping, with the young calves copying every move. Bring your binoculars. You can see this activity from the deck by the water, even if you do not get a Koa unit.
If you get a chance to stay in the Koa units, take it. But Hala units are nearly as nice. The best day of the week for an exchange into a great unit is Wednesday or Friday, if you choose to exchange into Hono Koa for a full week. Many of the Friday and Wednesday units are upper level.
Ask for a great ocean view and get a Wednesday or Friday check-in, if you exchange through Interval...

Aloha, and thank you for your flattering review. We are very happy you decided to purchase a little slice of heaven. Your wonderful headline piqued our curiosity, so we decided to map our geographical coordinates (20.8000°N, 156.3333°W). It turns out we’re closer to Samoa. Of course if the heaven you’re referring to is a state of mind, brought on by a visit to Hono Koa, you are absolutely right. As you mentioned, our spectacular ocean views (and sunsets) are among the best on Maui – and they’re made even better when you can watch the whale migration from your private lanai. You’ll be happy to know we are currently working with a design group to help select future furniture. Stay tuned! Thank you once again for your generous review. We appreciate your kind remarks and hope you will have many happy years here at Hono Koa.
