“Staying in Maui? Choose Lahaina and live within budget”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2013

Are you off to Maui? Trying to stay away from the expensive resorts in Wailea and Kapalua? Want to veer away from the crazy Timeshare Resorts of Ka'anapali? Stay in Lahaina!

A few minutes walk away from the Lahaina Town Centre, Old Lahaina House is the "idyllic" setting for your journey into Maui. Behind the house, past the gate, walk the corridor to access the sandy beach for a relaxing view of the sea. Inside, the rooms are very clean with A/C, iron, mini-fridge, small TV and a nice bathroom. We stayed at the Double Palms with its 2 twin beds and I am amazed at the size of the room. I did not have to be squeezed in like in the rooms of boutique business hotels. Next trip, I would be eyeing one of the suites with a balcony.

Sherri and her family are beautiful! Had a blast chatting with the sons.

If you are looking for a quiet place to stay the night at a budget (Maui Pricing) and not break the bank, this fits the bill. The town itself is so close and the shops close to each other you don't have to walk miles and miles to search for deals or places to eat like in Kihei.

I found out that Sherri had other properties, some beach front... may want to try those the next trip.

If you are into luxury, maid service, paying a lot of money for rooms a night and enslaving the rest of the population for your own enjoyment, this is not a place for you. Choose Ka'anapali or Wailea instead.

Pros: Easy going, secure, friendly family, reasonable rates, close to Lahaina, not boring, very close to the beach, no hotel staff to worry about.

Cons: Could not think of anything.

We slept there, put our stuff there, chatted with the family for quite a bit and made our journey into the four corners of Maui, in and out.

Old Lahaina House is a splendid choice when it comes to staying in Lahaina, Maui where the weather is probably some of the best in all of the islands. The rooms are nicely appointed and comfortable. The location is perfect, as everything is within walking distance. We didn't even bother with a car rental as we never needed it. The bus to Kana'apali is $2.00 per person and drops passengers off right at the main hotel area.

The hotel boasts a swimming pool, air conditioning, and even beach toys to use at the semi-private beach right across the street where snorkeling and standup paddle boarding are popular. The hotel has several rooms at various prices; however, the best room is the only one with a balcony area above the pool.

Room Tip: Ask for the large room with the balcony above the pool!

That's right folks. A house. You are renting one of a couple of rooms in a privately owned and partially occupied house. The room itself is very rustic, but spacious. The house is old, maybe why it is called Old Lahaina House, and so are the fittings and furniture. But it is a very well priced way of experiencing Maui and Lahaina town. We loved Lahaina town, with its funky, New Orleans feel to its Front Street restaurants, galleries and bars. Stay away from Kaanapali and it's overpriced, boring resorts and fake tropical landscapes. Lahaina is the best place we visited on Maui, Oahu or Kauai.

Old Lahaina house does not have any real family rooms, but there wouldn't be a problem with hiring both rooms, and having teenagers in the other. For families, I would probably recommend the Lahaina Shores Condos nearby. There aren't any real hotels or resorts located in Lahaina, which is great, and I think the Lahaina Roads Condos to the North are just too far out of town. The worst thing about Lahaina town is paid parking and availability, so it's nice to be able to park the car and just walk it 10mins to town. Nice bar and restaurant close by, and anABC store of course.

Bad Points: Air Con. Just plain awful. Spits out more noise than cold air. It is a wall system right above the bed. Come-on. They're not that expensive to replace.
Junk. Clean the place up a bit. I know it's a house. Your house. But you are renting it out to guests, so just tidy it up a bit more, and give it the odd wash down.
Red Necks next door. Not your fault, but late night (2am) partying, loud music, swearing and beer swilling just wasn't being very neighbourly.
Good Points: Price. It is value for money for those on a budget. Charm. Great staff/owner and just a nice change up from boring hotel service. Location. Near to beach and Main Street, but off a side street. Pool. Nice and clean for a swim. Adjacent BBQ.

Room Tip: The pool view room is the obvious choice.

If you are looking for a fancy landscaped resort on Maui, this is not it. The rooms are part of a complex of living spaces. There are 2 apartments occupied by permanent residents in addition to the rooms for rent. Our room was pool-side which was perfect for us.

While we were there, it was almost deserted so very quiet. There are a number of employees and family members who are in and out who provide great information, recommendations for activities, restaurants, etc. Sam, the cat, was a welcome visitor to our room.

The pool area is fantastic for swimming, reading, lounging.

It is convenient to walk into "downtown" Lahaina (10 minutes or less) and the beach is only 2 blocks from the house. A rental car is commended unless you want to spring for cabs. There is a frig, dishes, microwave and coffee maker in the room. Safeway is a short drive. There is no food service.

There is liquid soap provided but no shampoo/lotion. There is an iron/board and hair dryer. There is no maid service but you can get clean towels anytime. Beach and bath towels are provided.

We really enjoyed our stay.

Sort of hard to find as there are no signs indicating that it is a hotel - no sure what is going on in the rest of the house but no matter. The location is absolutely perfect. Lahaina is a wonderful town and its such a better option that one of the nameless ritzy resorts. Its a bit like Key West and we had our bikes so we could tool around town. The House is about a block from the beach which is very lovely and very calm in the morning - perfect for kayaking or paddleboarding. The room was rather large with a balcony and it was actually more like an apartment. Very spacious. Now the downside; the air conditioning was very loud and very old. Many of the outlets did not work and the shutters did not properly close. I know - not big items - and it really was fine with me, but partner sort of was dismayed at what he saw as the lack of upkeep. Nice small pool and Sherrie (the owner/manager?) was very accommodating. So if you want to stay in the heart of Lahaina, a good choice but don't expect perfection.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Old Lahaina House last November. Sherry, the owner, is just a wonderfully warm and informative lady who welcomes all her guests with open arms.

The house is within walking distance to downtown Lahaina. The rooms are unique with tropical flair. It was a wonderful experience!!!!

We had a great stay at this unconventional hotel, it was more like staying in someone’s home. It is walking distance to downtown Lahaina and the beach for spectacular sunsets and an opportunity to use the BBQ for poolside dinners.
