“Beautiful Setting & Grounds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

Stayed at this B&B for 5 days and have a decent flavor of the place. Beauty is the eye of the beholder but I would be hard pressed that anyone can walk away from this place and not say its uniquely stunning. The rest is up to what you prefer or not. The outdoor showers are nice if you don't mind stepping on some stones to get to it and only a jet stream (like a hose) spray. Also some reviewers wrote it's so romantic. It's only romantic if the people in the next room are not showering at the same time. In my case I didn't mind the stones, spray or neighbors and loved the outdoor shower. Choose your room wisely to suit your taste. We stayed in the Wailele room after reviewing all the rooms on the website. We wanted a larger room that had toilet with a door you can close and a bed that wasn't pushed against the wall. We were not disappointed. It was beautiful. Couple things to know about the room. Lighting is poor in the bathroom. They only had high hats in the ceiling. It was no big deal for us but some may have an issue here if you like a lot of light. The lanai outside is facing the back. There are two chairs and only one chaise as shown in the website. Your view is of a hedge but totally private. All perfectly fine for us and we couldn't have been happier. As for the breakfast, folks, it's a basic continental spread. After reading some of the reviews I thought it was going to be fantastic. Nonetheless, it's good coffee and some fresh foods that will get you going in the morning. They do a nice job with the spread and you can count on it being there waiting for you in the morning. As for the owners, Dan & Amy, I found them polite and efficient. We just didn't find them welcoming. One day our room wasn't cleaned and I called the office to let them know a new set of towels and soap would make us happy. A person was covering the phones since Dan nor Amy were around. He was extremely apologetic. I said it could wait until they got back. Not much later Dan and Amy fixed up the room with a slight apology from Dan only. I now was getting peranoid that we did something to upset them so I looked up some of the reviews and found some folks had the same experience. We actually felt better thinking it wasn't us and it's just how they seem to be. No big deal but I gave them a 4 because it would be fantastic if they were more welcoming and you felt they were happy out of all the places one could choose you chose Ho'oilo House.

My husband and I spent 2 weeks in Hawaii on our honeymoon. All of our accomodations were wonderful except for Ho'oilo house. We spent the first two nights in Maui in beautiful Hana. Hana is very tropical/lush and we were told we may encounter some bugs/insects in our lodgings. We did have a few small ants and a couple of flys. Nothing out of the ordinary from opening and closing doors/windows. We then went to Ho'oilo House. We were very impressed with the beauty of the BnB as well as the owner. However, we came back from dinner to find geckos and COCKROACHES in our room. We called in the owner who got one of the geckos out and then sprayed our bathroom floor to try and kill the cockroach. We were told that he would spray outside our room in the morning (which wasn't going to help that night!) After he left, there were more geckos in the room and more cockroaches. My husband stayed up for a couple of hours while I tried to sleep, only to wake up to a gecko in bed next to me!!! At that point, my husband was already on the phone with another hotel in Lahaina as he had seen more geckos and cockroaches while I was sleeping. We left at 12:15am and headed to the Sheraton at Black Rock were we had a a great stay (cockroach and gecko free!). We contacted the owner only to receive a partial reimbursement for our stay. We were told others who stayed that night did not have 'bug' problems. I find this hard to believe, especially since I heard the couple next to me swatting the wall a few times with something hard (most likely to kills bugs). It should not matter if others had a pleasant stay, we had multiple geckos and coackroaches in our room and were not told of this before we booked or when we arrived at the BnB. Our hotel in Hana warned us that due to their climate we may find some bugs. Ho'oilo House does not state this on their website or when you book a room. When I spend over 200 a night at a hotel/BnB, I should not expect to have any insect problems, especially COCKROACHES. We are in the process of filing a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau in Hawaii. I cannot recommend Ho'oilo House as there is a good chance you will have cockroaches in your room.

My wife and I spent half of our honeymoon here, and the second half at Grand Wailea in the south of Maui. We wished we had spent the entire time at Ho'oilo House! The Grand Wailea was nice and offered everything we expected, but it was of no comparison to the relaxed and beautiful setting provided at this gorgeous B&B. Dan and Amy were as available as needed and more than accomodating to any request. It was extremely nice to have the freedom and convenience of being steps away from your own vehicle to get out and explore. The grounds are well-kept and the rooms are spotless. We were apprehensive about the size of the room from the photos (Nalu) but I could not have been happier with the decision. The private balcony provided great views even from the bed. Everything that can be written about this place doesn't do it justice. Just go.

Room Tip: I can speak for Nalu and say that I was extremely happy with the room. The ocean view is worth the t...

Unbelievable peace and beauty, this place and the people will find a special place in your heart. I was worried about showering outside but I had never experienced weather so perfect anywhere before, when we left I hated not showering outside! There is a limit of six couples and no children allowed here, absolute bliss! The pool area is private and you will never need to fight for a sun bed , everything is available, generous and beautiful. We rarely saw anybody else other than Hal (gorgeous Uncle of Amy's from Anchorage who cared for us in their abscence) and a few lovely young honeymooning couples from all over the world. The house is close to Lahaina but you do need a car (plenty of Mustangs available from Dollar!) We drove the road to Hana - absolutely a "must do" it's challenging but beautiful. Take food because there is not much in Hana! We could not find any fault with Ho'oilo House, the delicious scent of fresh baked muffins and banana bread floating on the warm island breeze morning and afternoon will stay us me forever. The rooms are all gorgeous, doesn't matter which one you get and the best tea in all of America is available 24 hours a day! I might also mention our beautiful housemaid, not sure how to spell her name but nothing was too much trouble, she smiled ALL the time and we loved her. Thank you Amy, Daniel and Hal, we will be back for sure!
Just a tiny suggestion from Abby - please, a little screen for the toilet area, some of us are a little shy! Ha Ha

Room Tip: There is a bigger room without a sea view which has a more private toilet area if you are a little s...

This is a hard B&B to review. In some areas it justifies 5 stars, in others perhaps only 3 stars.

The building is attractive, the rooms are tasteful and clean, the pool and grounds are great and the location excellent. It’s in a residential area, but it’s all very spacious and we were never really conscious of neighbours. It’s about a 5 minute drive into Lahaina with its numerous restaurants and shops. The town is a little “tacky” with souvenir shops but still very pleasant.

The B&B definitely has the “wow factor”, ranging from the Bali sourced room doors and furniture to the outdoor showers. We stayed in two rooms as these were the only options available to us when making the reservation. Our first night was in Kohala and the rest of our time was in Kipuka.

Kohala was the cheaper room and was significantly smaller. It had a queen size bed but one side was pushed right up against the wall, meaning that we had to climb over each other to get in and out! The stone bath tub looked great but was not particularly large or comfortable and the sliding door leading to the outdoor shower had fallen off its runners when we checked in, and had to be repaired. Like many other reviewers, we initially enjoyed the concept of the outdoor shower but we really didn’t like the fact that it just produced a jet of water – there was no spray attachment. It was therefore not particularly pleasant to use. The sliding door glass between the bathroom and shower was in need of cleaning because the shower water just splashed off it. The aspect of the room we disliked most however was the lack of a door or screen to separate the toilet from the bedroom. To be fair, this is noted on the web site but we did not expect the toilet to be quite as central in the room as it was. Although we are a couple, it’s still nice to have a little privacy and it ended up with one of us sitting on the lanai whilst the other used the toilet!

Kipula was much bigger and more comfortable with a separate toilet door. Again it was attractively and tastefully furnished, but the shower jet was still unpleasant, and the water had a tendency to bounce off the door and leak into the bathroom. Furthermore, we were required to practice our long jump skills when getting from the bathroom onto the wooden shower board, to avoid stepping on the loose stones in between.

We found the Kohala bed supremely comfortable, the Kipuka less so, although it was still fine. The bed however had a large wooden platform / step around it, with sharp corners, which we walked into on more than one occasion. And although the room was for two, there was only one sun lounger provided on the lanai. The air con unit in this larger room also struggled to cool the area.

We had a bulb out throughout our stay and also several curtain rings had come off the rail. These issues should have been fairly obvious to housekeeping but were not fixed during our stay.

Breakfasts were exactly as described on the web site but were probably the worst we had during our B&B based tour of the Hawaiian islands. Whilst understanding that food should not be wasted, the quantity of food made available was limited and we felt that we had to almost measure out our portion and take no more. We even had to ask for bread and for the coffee flask to be refilled on a couple of occasions. Supplies were particularly sparse towards the end of the breakfast period.

Our preference is for quiet, peaceful boutique style hotels with laid back service but whilst Amy and Dan were always polite and helpful when we spoke with them they were not particularly proactive in their approach. We did not want – or expect - “open arm welcomes” but it would have been nice to get a Good Morning occasionally from Amy when we walked past her office. Similarly, when we checked out, she did not really thank us for choosing to stay at Ho’oilo. She just remained in her office as we drove off and we left feeling slightly unappreciated. A small B&B such as this should have a relaxed atmosphere but it just felt a little too business like and not sufficiently personal.

Given the above negatives, one might wonder why we have given 4 stars. Simply because the common areas of the property are so nice. The B&B is peaceful, in a great location with a nice pool and amazing views. As noted above, it definitely has the wow factor, which we initially loved, but after a couple of days some features became slightly annoying. It has great style but substance is lacking in certain areas.

We would certainly consider returning to Ho'oilo but would probably look at other options first. A room with a toilet door would be a pre-requisite however, and it would be great if they could offer an internal spray shower facility as well the outdoor jet.

We enjoyed every minute of our stay at Ho'olio House. Great location, with amazing views of the ocean and Lanai. The outdoor shower also offers the same amazing views while you clean up before a night out on the town. Serene, happy and very comfortable, we are already planning our return. Dan and Amy, the owners are great and were very helpful with recommendations about Maui. The fresh breakfast was delicious. If you are there Saturday, stop by the farmers market on the corner of HWY 30 and Kai Hele Kuu St, for some delicious local treats.

Aloha.

Room Tip: Pick the ocean view.

We spent the second week of a two week stay on Maui at the Ho'oilo House and absolutely LOVED it! The home, grounds, view, and atmosphere there is truly beautiful! It was peaceful, serene, and totally relaxing. Although there were other couples there as guests, we often felt as if we were there alone. Each morning they served delicious homemade muffins, fresh fruit, eggs, toast and yogurt. A perfect breakfast for us! Our room was very clean, comfortable and we fell in love with the outdoor shower! We loved being a short drive from Front Street in Lahaina, but also in a quiet scenic area away from the crowds. After spending our first week at the Hyatt, it was a wonderfully quiet retreat! When we return to Maui, we will DEFINITELY stay here again!
