“Hale Mahina beach resort- A choice to make”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

This hotel is located on a private, attractive and beautiful beach with nice grounds. However, coming in, there is a lot you have to know before. The upside front rooms are good, well decorated. However, the overall look of the hotel is old and in need of renovation. The bathrooms are small and oddly designed with bad sanitary facilities. The backside rooms are quite noisy and you can even hear the truck drivers whispering. The television set in each room is different and you never know which one is better. The kitchens also need renovation. However the staff is friendly. Overall it gives you a healthy environment and the employees are cooperative. The food is good but the BBQ is a bad choice. Because the condos are individually owned, some are renovated and some are old. A good value for price though. I will recommend it but after some renovations.

“A GEM”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

We are returning shortly to this location - very nice down to earth condo with great swimming, reef, views. This is a very reasonable cost with all the amenities one needs in paradise. Swimming pool is adequate with a nice hot tub. Grills available in a secured private beach. Direct access to the water. Turtles on the shore. Sunsets perfect and nice viewing of Whales.

“Hale Mahina Beach Resort Unit B402”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

This condo complex is 45 minutes from the airport. Be sure to hit the Costco before leaving that side of the island. The great thing about this condo complex is it is on a very private, beautiful beach with a nice sized pool and the grounds are kept beautifully. The turtles seem to stay at this beach most of their time. These condos are individually owned so some of them have been renovated.
B 402 - You cannot in good conscience advertise a condo as ‘luxury’ without backing it up with more than just a sub-zero refrigerator. This particular unit was probably a luxury unit at one time but not in this or most the last decade. The kitchen and bathrooms are in need of renovation. The kitchen garbage disposal is so old it leaks into the cabinet cavity causing it to be incredibly unsanitary and smelly. The bathrooms are awkwardly designed and whatever toilet bowl sanitation is being used it smells worse than a public toilet. The upstairs master bathroom has a funny little bathtub that you step up to and whenever you’re showering the water accumulates to an inch deep by the time you finish. The main TV is the current flat-screen design but upstairs the TV is from some other decade,is way high up without a working channel changer.
Things you should know before booking: –
• The back bedroom is very noisy. Garbage trucks coming every other day and road traffic makes it very difficult to get a good night’s sleep
• BBQ are not propane/gas operation and there are only 4 of them – be patient
• Itty bitty ants are part of the tropical climate so again, be patient and clean up after yourself - store all food in the frig

I would recommend the resort but not the unit until some repairs/renovations have been made.

“Would stay here again for sure!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2013

This was our first trip to Hawaii and we were very pleased with our stay here. The grounds are beautiful and immaculate, family friendly and just the right size. The swimmable beach (not easily found!) was a real gem. (It's flanked on both sides by rocks, so it's pretty "private"). Huge Honu (green sea turtles) in these waters every day. A monk seal made her way onto the beach one day for a looong nap. Lots of chaise loungers and chairs available (free) for use. Pool is a little chilly, sauna is very nice. Grassy yard is terriffic for lounging on - no sand in your sandwich! We didn't venture to many other beaches because this one was just perfect, especially if you have kids, or just want to be close to your unit for meals, snacks, naps, etc. The manager (Larry) is friendly and helpful. We read some other critical reviews before our trip that made us hesitant to book here, but those are not true reflections of this property. (Probably had obnoxious children!) There is road noise at night, but I think all the properties along this strech of road are likely the same. (It wasn't terrible). We were in unit B201. The queen bed is ok, the pull out couch bed was fine for kids but not very comfortable for an adult (never met a pull out couch that was!). We saw around five teeny tiny ants in the kitchen one day when food was left on the counter. Otherwise, not a single bug! (Keep your food - all of it - in the fridge). This unit had a boogie board for use, laundry soap, dishwasher soap and two beach towels. Hair drier could be replaced. Plenty of bath and kitchen towels. Extra pillows and blankets. Toaster, coffee maker and supplies, plenty of dishes, untensils, some spices, etc. Large portable fan. We didn't watch TV once, so can't speak for that. Furniture was clean and comfortable. Close to shopping and dining. Safe area - we saw people out jogging early, early in the morning each day.

Perks to staying on a 2nd or higher floor - great views of the ocean for whale watching. Perks of a ground floor unit - walk right out into the yard and beach from your unit (rather than out the front, down stairs and through a locked gate each time). Unit A is further from the pool and faces the ocean more.

Room Tip: Perks to staying on a 2nd or higher floor - great views of the ocean for whale watching. Perks of a...

“Love the private beach.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

I came here with my family on Christmas break and I was in love with the ocean front. I loved the private and quiet (and CLEAN) little beach. Not a lot of other hotels in Maui offer that! It wasn't super fancy so all of the people were really down to earth! It was perfect to have a grassy area with a good ocean view... It's more comfortable than lying right on the sand, but still had the same beachy feel and experience. The pool was also very clean and a nice temperature.

We had a few problems with appliances, however. The toaster clearly had some safety issues, as it shocked my sister a few times. The washer and dryer kind of sucked (we were in a condo style) and the vacuum did a less than stellar job. Otherwise it was well equipped and well kept!

The staff we met was all very welcoming as well, and it was surprisingly affordable for the time of year, location and cleanliness. I'd stay here again in a heart beat.

Room Tip: Choose a ground level room, so you can walk right out to the beach rather than coming down a flight...
