“Westin Villas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

Our one bedroom room was spacious and had a nice kitchen/day room. I really enjoyed the breeze coming in the room even though we were on the ground level. The staff were all very nice except for one issue I will address in a second.

The restaurant on the property by the beach with the large screen TV's had the worse service. Our waitress went on a break without telling anyone and never gave us our full order? I thought it was a fluke then the second day our waiter seemed more interested in talking with the bartender and texting on his phone then bringing us the drinks we ordered. We never went back to this bar/restaurant again on our trip. The drinks at this location for some reason also seemed watered down not sure why.

Room Tip: stop at costco get food/snacks/wine etc. Save some money

My family and I stayed there this past week in a 2 bedroom lock out. It was a beautiful resort and grounds were kept nicely. Only two complaints I have- one is the wifi- a bit unstable and continued to drop out- but we are on vacation so a little digital disconnect isn't a bad thing :). Secondly check out. We asked for a late checkout and were granted until noon. At 12 pm on the dot we not only received 2 phone calls to leave the room but also a visit from a staff member at the door asking "are you checking out yet?" it certainly felt like we were being forced out when we would've been leaving at that time anyway. A bit of a sour taste on leaving but overall great stay!

The room was wonderful, big, clean and the bed heavenly! Our room was close to the lobby and the beach so that was perfect. We had one of those timeshare deals got a cooler bag and Maui carmels. The meeting was NO Pressure at all. We still have 90 days to think about joining. The staff was so friendly and Barbara in the South Tower helped us book all our tours. We were in the North Tower. The only bad thing was the food at the restaurants at the hotel. It was just ok but everything else made up for it. We couldn't extend our stay at this hotel cause they were booked but we found another place.

Room Tip: We had room 6240 North and it was great!

The Resort Villas offer you everything. The nicest modern villas, complete with washer and dryer for your convenience and spa with jets for relaxation. When we first entered our room, we felt at home. We didn't rent a car and found a rental about a mile away. But we checked out the welcome package with the concierge and found out they offer a shuttle service that takes you to some great spots into Lahaina. We never had to rent a car! The shuttle service was EXCELLENT! It's what made our trip worth while actually. Without the shuttle service we probably wouldn't know some of the places to go or history of Hawaii. Eddie, our driver, informed us of important facts about Hawaii and gave us some trivia on it. He even serenaded us with a couple of cultural songs. This alone gave us a tour guide of the places we were seeing on the way and entertainment at the same time. It was a full package in itself! During our whole trip, Eddie, informed us more of Hawaii that we never knew, filled us with laughs and smiles, and gave us tips on where to eat and shop! If you're going to catch a ride with the Starwood shuttle, try and get a ride with Eddie!! He's the best!! The only thing missing was, the shuttle did not take you to the airport or further into Maui past Lahaina so you were limited to the rest of the islands beauty, activities, and entertainment while on vacation. So, you may end up paying for a rental and a couple hundred for a taxi to and from the airport. It cost a whopping $100 our first way out from the airport to the hotel and then another $90 from the hotel to the airport!!! Money that could have been used farther into Maui. And then another few hundred for rental car and gas if you wanted to explore further past Lahaina, like most do. I would have given this 5 stars if the shuttle also took us to the airport or farther south into Maui, to REALLY get the full Maui experience. It was almost perfect! But otherwise, it is a place I would go to again and recommend to friends and family to stay. I would definitely mention the shuttle and it's a "must do" but also warn them of the drawbacks - no ride to airport or further into Maui past Lahaina. This was a business and personal trip.

Room Tip: If you "GO Green" at the front desk, you'll get a complimentary buffet breakfast for e...

My husband and I stayed at the Westin Kaanapali Villas North in early September, right after Labor Day. We traded in a Four Seasons timeshare for a week here, and were definitely looking forward to a nice stay at a Westin in Maui. Unfortunately, this location is not up to Westin standards and we will definitely not stay at this property again.

To start off, the Westin Villas felt like a tight industrial apartment complex crammed with as many guests as possible. We arrived on a Saturday and were supposed to have an ocean view room, but our room instead had a view of the back of another building with a tiny sliver of ocean view blocked by a row of palm trees. We did ask to change rooms and fortunately, they were able to accommodate us the following day. The second room was much better in terms of view, but when they transferred our bags from the first room, they just dumped them on the floor in a heap as we were not in the room at the time (thinking it was because I wasn't there to tip them). In the new room, there were several issues, but we did not want to move again, so we dealt with it throughout the week. First, the A/C unit rattled loudly and with 4 calls to maintenance throughout the week, it was never fully fixed. There was mold in the shower/bathroom on the baseboards. The shower door never fully closed so you stepped out onto a wet bathmat/floor. There were also stains on the carpet and tile. When we moved to the new room, we called to confirm the new cleaning day and they gave me the wrong day, and showed up a day earlier. We had to ask for new towels a couple of days later and they charge you for refreshing your towels.

In general, the hotel staff was not very friendly nor helpful. We set up wake up calls for a couple of days and they were either not done or called at the wrong time. We were charged for valet on the first night when upon arrival, we were informed it would be complimentary (when asked about it, they did remove it from our bill). When visiting the concierge for any recommendations, we would receive the constant pressure for a timeshare presentation, which was not appreciated. The grounds of the hotel were not incredibly well kept and quite disappointing when compared to some of the surrounding hotels. There was bird droppings on various railings throughout the property that were never cleaned. We constantly saw staff pushing around maintenance carts and luggage carts around the pool area and hallways, and would have to get out of their way. Often times, staff would get on the elevator first with carts prior to the guest getting on the elevator, so much for nice service.

On to the pool area of the Westin Kaanapali... You have to get up quite early in the morning to secure a chair by the pool with an umbrella. By 8am, most chairs with umbrellas are taken, so you either scorch in the sun, are left to pay for a cabana or don't sit by the pool at all. If you leave your chair for more than an hour, your chair can be taken from you and your stuff is confiscated by the pool staff until you return. There was a film of suntan lotion and hair in the pool that did not make it all that enticing to go in the actual pool. There is a pool towel limit, so if you want more than two towels for any reason, you're out of luck. The pool bar food was quite terrible and they charge $7 for a virgin drink during happy hour. We did rent snorkel gear from the pool shop for the week, and I had to exchange my mask 3 different times without anyone really being able to help me. I gave up and just kept snorkeling with a mask that never quite fit right. All in all, we did our best to leave the resort during the day as the pool area was just not all that relaxing and enjoyable.

We did visit the spa and yet again, another disappointing experience. My masseuse took it upon himself to talk to me throughout the massage, and afterwards, I was not relaxed, but sore and annoyed. My husband's massage was also terrible as his masseuse wore rubber shoes and squeaked every time he made a move, and would make cheesy comments throughout the massage that were unwelcomed. They also had the least relaxing music in the room and when I inquired about it, I was told they couldn't do anything about the music selection. I would recommend to go to another hotel for any spa services.

Finally, on our check out day, there was a knock at the door at 9:30am. It was a hotel staff member asking when we would be checking out. Checkout is 10:00am mind you, so it sure wasn't the most friendly goodbye and all the more reason for us not to come back to this property.

I will mention the few positives we did encounter at the hotel. Snorkeling in front of the hotel property is quite nice and it had a great variety of sea life. The front of the property had beautiful views of the sunset and one night, we experienced dolphins swimming by at sunset and it was stunning. Last, but not least, the Italian restaurant on the property is quite tasty. I wasn't expecting to go to Hawaii and eat Italian food, but we were exhausted from a long day of traveling and wanted to dine at the hotel and were pleasantly surprised at the great food and the friendly staff at the restaurant.

All in all, if you're looking for a nice, relaxing, serene Westin property in Maui, this is not the location for you.

Located on the famous Ka’anapali Beach, the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas offer studio, one bedroom and two bedroom villas. It is very popular with young families and as a babymoon destination. The resort is a blend of condo living and resort amenities.

There is direct access to the ocean and the walking path that runs along Ka’anapali Beach. The beach activities huts offer snorkeling, on-site SCUBA, kayaking, wind surfing and paddle boarding. A short walk south on the walk is a public park that offers great snorkeling. We also found the snorkeling right off the property to be excellent, with a variety of coral and tropical fish. If you have never tried snorkeling, you can rent a snorkel package from one of the discount providers on the Island. They now also provide corrective masks for those of us who wear glasses.

There are five pools, including a children’s pirate ship pool, four whirlpools and the ever popular water slide. The kitchens are fully equipped, allowing you to avoid the high cost of eating on the Islands. A full grocery store is a short drive away, offering prepared foods and a great assortment of fruit. If you are a fan of Poki, the best is found at Food Land in Lahaina.

There is also an outdoor gas grilling area. A washer and dryer are included in the unit, allowing you to bring less clothes and avoid excess baggage fees. There are two mini stores on site with basics for your stay, along with a deli. You can also have your refrigerator stocked before you get there, allowing you to jump right into vacation mode.

The property has three restaurants. The breakfast buffet is good quality and pricing ($29 per person when we were there) is consistent with resorts on the Islands. We found the strategy of having a late breakfast and skipping lunch allowed us to control calories and cut the cost of one meal. We have fruit and cookies with our coffee in the morning. The resort will sometimes offer specials that include breakfast and of course it offers the Starwood Kids Dining and Keiki Aloha program for ages 5-12.

We were pleasantly surprised by the Italian restaurant under the lobby and prices were consistent with dinner at Whalers Village. We did not find the sports bar to be a good venue for our favorite evening activity of watching the sunset while having pupus (appetizers) and a glass of sparkling wine. You can walk up the beach to Roy’s at Honu Kai for a better sunset viewing venue.

Since this is a Starwood vacation property, the concierge will offer you a time share presentation, they are not obnoxious about it. A simple no works. There have been some complaints on travel forums that the concierge focus is on selling condos, if the concierge is not interested in booking your activities, contact your travel agent who will be delighted with the business.

A shuttle will take you to the Sheraton and Westin close to the Whalers Village so you can avoid the outrageous parking fees at the Village. Whalers Village has shops, restaurants and a food court.

If you have never been to a luau, the Old Lahaina Luau is one of the best on the Islands. It sells out early, reservations are a must! Get there early to find a parking spot.
