We have a family of five and have been to Hawaii once each year for about 7 years. This was our most enjoyable trip of them all. For one, Maui has become our favorite island, so if you plan on staying here Kaanapali is a great location. Lots of resorts, restaurants, golf, activities. And if picking Kaanapali you can't go wrong with the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas.
First of all the premises/resort is flat out beautiful. The place has a very new contemporary look while retaining the local Hawaiian ambiance. And if you get lucky enough to score an ocean view room, its just incredible. There is something mesmerizing about looking into the Hawaiian seas from your bedroom/balcony and seeing Lanai and/or Molokai off in the horizon. There are nice koi ponds near the lobby that my kids loved. There are several swimming pools to swim in which was fun for the kids. One had a pirate ship in it with little slides and a shallow swim area for young kids. One of the larger pools has a nice slide for bigger kids.
We also enjoyed the nicely furnished suites. We had a two bedroom villa which was great with our kids. Ate breakfast each day in the room. There are several nearby markets to do grocery shopping. I recommend Foodland which has great "poke" and other local faire. There is also a Safeway and Times supermarkets. As I mentioned before we had a fantastic ocean view. We were in building 2 on the 4th floor of the South property (there is a north and south portion of the resort). Rooms were spacious equipped full fridge and washer and dryer. If had to choose I would take view over size, but here we had BOTH! Also.... don't forget the Westin Heavenly beds!
The resort is also very close to the Kaanapali golf resort where they have two nice courses. A bit overpriced but what isn't in Hawaii. I played both courses (Kai and Royal). The highlight of these course is the vistas of the ocean and the islands in the background. It makes all the bad shots feel okay.
Service was excellent. Everyone from check-in at lobby, towel guys, concierge was great. Because we happened to be celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary they also surprised us with a nice bottle of champagne in the room upon arrival.
Parking is plentiful. They offer daily valet service, but we always found parking close by so it was never an issue. Also.... maybe it was the time of year that we came (October), but we never had trouble finding a beach chair by the pool. They also offer umbrella and beach chair service at the beach if interested. We never did but we saw several people who did
The BEST part about this resort is the beach. Its gorgeous. Again, amazing views of Lanai and Molokai. Water is nice and warm. Waves are also very gentle and safe for kids. But what makes it take the cake is the snorkeling off this shore. There is lots of great coral literally 10-15 feet off shore with tons of great tropical fish. We spent almost $100 per person to do the Molokini snorkeling tour (which was great), but the snorkeling was seriously much better off the shore of the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas. And that without the 40 minute drive to the harbor and one hour boat ride to Molokini. Seriously.... it was better at the beach here because the water was calm and you are RIGHT THERE swimming over the coral and the fish in shallow waters. For the snorkeling excursions, the coral is 30-50 feet below so unless you scuba dive or SNUBA you can't see all the wildlife up close. At the resort beach, you are right up close to it all and there is plenty of territory to explore. You could spend all day there. My kids learned to snorkel in the ocean for the first time this trip (ages 8 and 6). It was much easier and more enjoyable for them at the hotel than at Molokini. I would recommend renting gear from the resort. They offer a weekly rental for everything at $36/week. You can get it for less off site but then you have to drive there and take the family to make sure everything fits everyone. And if there is a problem with anything, you can just walk it to the booth right near the beach and they will replace it right there on the spot. One of the snorkels had a leak, so it was great to be able to just walk over there to exchange rather than driving back to some off site store. Just the great snorkeling alone makes this place an ideal place to stay for the family, but as I mentioned above, there is so much more to like about this place and why I gave it 5 stars, Its not the same as a Four Seasons or a Ritz Carlton, but the sum of all the positives place it right up there in my book.
If there is any gripe I have, I wish the towel exchange booths would stay open later than 6pm. Sometimes the kids want to play at the beach or swim in the pools beyond that time, and we had to go all the way to the lobby to get new towels after 6pm. Serious drag.
If you don't like kids, do not stay here. It is very family friendly and there are lots of kids.
On friday they have a cool bazaar to buy souveneirs near the beach. We bought some gifts and some wonderful Hawaiian shaved ice.
All in all a great resort in a great location on a great beach. HIGHLY recommend this place.
p.s.. There is also a spa and a kids club which we did not use so cannot comment on
