My husband and I have just spent 5 lovely days in Lahaina at Penny's Place - his first visit to Hawaii and my second (including my second stay at Penny's which should already tell you how much I like it). We stayed in the Ekahi room which was spacious, airy and gave us a view of the beach over the road. If you are someone who likes the feeling of staying in someone's home and getting a sense of the real lives of the people who live where you are visiting, then Penny's is the place for you. It attracts that kind of guest with whom you get to share the delicious fruit and pastry breakfast as well as travelling adventures - as well as getting Penny's tips on the best beaches, etc. etc. etc. We like to prepare some of our own meals, and the lanai is fully equipped with a refrigerator and microwave, utensils, plates, every condiment you could wish for, tea, coffee, etc - as well as comfy chairs, tables, etc. Penny has though of everything - I especially like the cupboard that seems to contain everything that one might have 'forgotten'. She also provides lots of beach towels and beach chairs for borrowing as well as insulated lunch boxes for packing a picnic. Penny is a gracious hostess. I hope she's still there when we visit again.
There is a Safeway at the Cannery Shopping Centre a few blocks away, as well as all sorts of other grocery shops further into Lahaina. Lahaina is a great place from which to visit South, Central and West Maui.
PS: two of our favourite restaurants are also walking distance away: Aloha Mixed Plate and Honu. And make sure you book to see Warren and Annabel's Magic Show - even if magic isn't your thing, this is a delighful evening and Warren is not only a skilled magician, he's a charismatic and funny entertainer who is enjoying himself so much, that all the audience does too. Seems like they sell out regularly, so booking before coming (which we did) is recommended
