“Beware of "Oceanfront" Rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2011

We paid for a 1-bedroom oceanfront condo but did not get one. We had a better view of the adjoining resort than the ocean. It appears the only true oceanfront condos are the largeer 2-bedroom units. Its disappointing to fly all the way to Maui and not getr what you paid for.

The location was great. It had a great view of the ocean. The room was beautiful. It definitely made our stay in Hawaii that much better. We looked forward to going back to sleep there.

We returned to the Royal Kahana for our third visit to Maui and stayed this time on the garden side, unit 906. The view on to Molokai and beyond was awesome. Having stayed our past two visits above the pool, we felt that the garden sides was a bit quieter. Our unit was outstanding and seemed to be recently renovated. The staff was welcoming and available. For the price (reasonable and competitive), the Royal Kahana is a good deal, without sacrificing anything. If you want West Maui for your place to stay, we'd recommend this property highly.

This was our second time of staying here and have recomeded to friends. We enjoy the view that is (we were on the top floor ocean front). We love the crank open windows at the rear of the unit to create a wonderful relaxing all day and night cross breeze. The attendant at the front desk gave us the key to check out the room before we decided to check in. I would recomend asking to see the room before checking in we were givng two choices with a ocean front or ocean view and a slight difference in prices. It was up to date and clean. The kitchen althugh small, had everything we needed and then some. The washer and dryer was like new and at first we couldn't get the washer to work but we finally figured it out (operator error). The pool is kinda small but you do have the ocean. There is also clean bar bee ques by the pool you can use. The place was quite except for our last night, there was new guest checking into the room next to us and they were arguing very loudly, slaming dooors and what ever. But some one must have come up and told them to cool it because it got quite after that. There is no restauraunt on site and most of all the tourist activities are quite a drive away. This may be something to keep in mind with the price of gas as high as it is. My wife left a pair of prescription sunglasses in our room after we checked out and she called later that afternoon and was told to call housekeeping, they returned the call the following day and told her they didn't find them. So make sure you have everything before you check out.

Room Tip: Ask the front desk to see the rooms before you check in the suite is rellly nice.

Outrigger Royal Kahana was referred to us by a friend that lived for many years on Maui and actually was the GM at the Hilton Resort in Kona, Big Island. Our room was dated and there were labels all over the place (probably 30-35) telling us what NOT to do! I.e. "Do not open windows", "oven for light cooking only", "do not move lamps", "do not open master bedroom sliding door", "a/c shuts off if windows are open", "don't push chair in too close to table", etc... It was brutal! Beach access isn't good and you really need to go down to Ka'anapalii beach to get into good sand, and Whaler's Market or Lahaina for shopping and commercial eats.

Worst thing is that we left behind a hair curling iron and a straightening iron under the sink accidentally and upon calling once we returned home, were told we needed to talk to the housekeeping manager to see if they found it. When calling the HK Mgr, we were told they didn't see it and that we'd have to file a police report! Out $200, and asked to call the police...awful and the resort manager offered no help, just hid behind housekeeping.

Best part about staying at the Royal Kahana is that there is a small restaurant within walking distance called "Black Angus" (not the chain...) that has amazing food, awesome drink specials and phenominal personalized service (especially if you get to be served by Robert Ponce, a Hawaii native and amazing ambassador). They serve sushi, poke, and steak. truly a diamond in the rough and a terrific value.

Better experiences and values are nearby...

The Royal Kahana is right on a gorgeous beach with beautiful view from the pool and a near 360 degree view from the condo we stayed in (1020).
Outrigger was great in all respects. We booked our stay directly with them and were impressed with the helpfulness of the staff.
The condo was clean and comfortable.
Nice vacation.

This was the first time we stayed at this property. All personnel were friendly and hospitable. Our one bedroom condo was clean and comfortable. At $200.00 a night we feel that this is one of the best values on Maui!
