“Whale Watch on the Maui Princess”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

We had a port day in Lahaina, Maui. So we booked this tour online at www.mauiprincess.com for about $40 per person (Feb 2013). Luckily we had good weather. It turns out they have a kiosk right on the pier where the cruise ship tenders dock so we really did not have to pre-purchase. The boat was not full. This was a 2 hour tour. The boat goes out and when someone sees a whale the captain would head that way. We saw plenty of whales from a distance of 150 ft or more (mainly more). What we saw was the backs of the whales when they break the surface, flukes when they roll over, the tails when they dive, and puffs of spray when they breathe out hard. Our tour was just so-so. This is the same boat they do their Sunset Dinner Cruise on so there were tables and chairs that are bolted down onto the deck.Their "naturalist" sat on the dining tables while she talked to us, and soon the passengers also set their human butts on these tables with their feet on the chairs. The thought of people dining off these tables during the Dinner Cruises totally gross me out. Ewww, right?

“Poor dinner cruise!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

We were so disappointed with this dinner cruise! We felt like sardines because the plastic tables and chairs are bolted or glued to the upper deck and fixed to hold as many sardine people as possible. It was difficult to get in and out of the chars, especially for anyone with the least bit of a belly. If you weight over 250 pounds, forget it: you will never get into the chairs! You were assigned to a table and could not sit where you wanted. The "dancing" after dinner was a farce because you were stuck in your chairs! The food was just average and definitely not worth the price! The evening weather and sunset was the best part and we did see whales. I would not do this again and never recommend this dinner cruise to anyone.

Great crew, good food, and nice boats. We would use them again! We used the cruise out of Lahaina harbor.

“Excellent adventure to Molokai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

I have been to the islands numerous times but never to Molokai. For my travel partner, this was her first time in Hawaii. The $230 per person seemed a bit steep but we both really wanted to go. More than the $230, our ability to be someplace at 6:45am is questionable. The breakfast included on the ferry is a Costco muffin and fresh fruit, which was fine. The ride over and the ride back was gorgeous and we saw "tons" of whales. When we got to the dock on Molokai, they separated all the folks going on a guided tour into 3 vans. We got lucky - Kalani was our tour guide and he was great. He is a great storyteller, very knowledgeable about the island (duh, he grew up there on and off) and made for a very enjoyable day. The coffee stop did seem touristy but I did buy some very good Molokai Muleskinner. Then we went to a Macadamia nut plantation which was interesting - mostly due to the personality of the owner. We both bought Macademia nut mustard which is also very good. Lunch wasn't remarkable but was fine, we had the chance to sit with a couple from our tour and it was nice to get to know them and share experiences. Also, the view of Kalaupapa was amazing. We saw fish houses, two of St. Damien's churches - Kalani's rendition of Father Damien's story was fascinating. The last stop was the main town - one street - couple markets and a few stores. I wouldn't mind going back and staying a couple nights at the (one) hotel or in a condo. However, this isn't Maui - don't expect fine restaurants and flashy hotels. Molokai is very much a locales place and not touristy at all. The $230 was well worth it.

“Unless there are whales not worth the money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013 via mobile

We took a dinner cruise and saw no whales. We do understand that this is not under the control of the cruise company but the actual cruise itself consisted of going offshore, moving up the coast a short ways, sitting in teh water looking at the beach while the sun went down and then returning. Not very stimulating.

The food and service were quite good so we definititely got some value for our money but I would not do this again. For the money spent you can go to one of the top Maui restaurants and still take a dedicated whale watching cruise.
