“Get the full Island tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

I read about this app right before we left for our trip and downloaded it on to my iPhone. We turned it on as we left the airport and were happy to hear not only directions to wherever we wanted to go, but information about the history and myths about the island. My kids, 13, 15 and 17 loved it. We called our guide Paul and even when we were away from the car the kids would say, "I wonder what Paul thinks we should have for dinner?!". I can't recommend it highly enough. We really. really wish we had it in Kauai as well! A must get for $9.99. I followed another poster's recommendation and brought our car charger as well as a cable so the iphone is heard through the stereo. This made a big difference. HIghly recommended!

“Tour without the Bus”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013 via mobile

Downloaded the GyPSy Guide to my IPhone and headed for Hana from Ka'apauli. The GyPSy Guide is a must have. Wish we would have found out about it earlier so we could have used it from the moment we arrived. Very informative and interesting. Helpful suggestions and ideas. If you download onto your phone, be sure to have a charger for your car. My phone ran down before getting to Hana. Loved the way it coordinated with the GPS so it knows where you are and can tell you how soon you will be turning. Also appreciated the 5 things that are "must see" if you are on a tight schedule. Thought this was brilliant.

“Best Guide Ever...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

I don't know why there are not more of these GPS guides for other popular tourist attractions. It's great that it gives you directions and informative facts about the various popular stops. As other the other reviewers stated, a must have on the drive to Hana.

“Must have for Road to Hana”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013 via mobile

We got this as an Ipad app. Great decision. The information is really interesting and you know exactly where to turn, eat, etc. They point out five must do things, and we loved them all!

“a must for smart phone users”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

I read about gypsy guide maui on trip advisor just before leaving for maui and downloaded it to an old iPhone (we have gone android but there isn't yet a supported app. You don't need current phone service to a smart phone, however, for this to work so loaded up an old apple phone).
We ended up taking a bus tour to Hana - BUT I am still very very glad we had this app for the rest of our trip driving around the island. The detail and gps coordination is amazing. For example, while driving on a highway on the north end of the island, we were advised to 'look for a break in the guard rail in about 1000 feet with a dirt road on the other side. Drive through and park - great surfing spot and great views". Best breaking waves and most exciting surfing we saw on the entire trip.
You just turn on the app, it takes a minute to triangulate your location, and then it delivers points of interest on your route. We were staying on the far south end of the island (Makena Beach - great for snorkeling and swimming with Sea Turtles, not well located for much else) and frequently drove a highway down the middle of the island between trips. During the 'dead times' when there wasn't much scenery to point out, the app teaches you basic language skills and gives you some history of the island.
Had the Road to Hana not been described as such a perilous trip (and driving a rental car requires you return the way you came - tour buses rough it across the dirt road on the other side of Hana and back up the middle of the island instead) we would definitely have used the guide and, I suspect, seen more and had an even better experience.
Well worth the $9.95 cost of the app - and do get the entire island guide, NOT just the Hana module. There are so many other cool spots we would absolutely NEVER have found even with our great guide book.
Oh - and don't miss Mama's Fish House - but that's another review ; )
