December 2009: We went into Boss Frog's to rent snorkel equipment for the day and this lovely sales lady told us that if they have open spots left on the boat the day of the dinner cruise, you can purchase them at a discount.
We hadn't intended to go out on a dinner cruise, as most reviews appear to ward one off from them. But for a discount, we decided to treat our friends and the four of us went. $200 for four of us to go. Not too bad for dinner, cruise, drinks....
Here is the trick: be there early and get on the boat first! I know that sounds obnoxious, and I am not saying elbow your way past people at all. But make a point of arriving early so you can get a seat with a table on top with a great view. This trip was terrific! We had front row seats, prime rib, cocktails, BEAUTIFUL sunset, and 'whale soup' as the captain called it. They were everywhere. Wow! We definitely felt like we got our money's worth and more.
Next trip to Maui, January 2011: we had a free afternoon so we decided to call and see if they had open spots...they did, although the salesman seemed annoyed that we knew about this discount and prices had gone up this year. This time it was just my husband and I, and we decided a bit late to go so we arrived toward the end of boarding. Our seats were lower deck, and if we wanted to be outside, we had to sit wedged in between two larger groups who were provided tables - we were told we couldn't have a table due to our location. :(
When dinner was served, we went inside and sat at a table to eat so it wasn't in our laps. We were the only ones sitting inside, and the tables were right by the buffet line so it felt kind of weird. Not the end of the world, but a little challenging to hold onto the romance of a sunset cruise with your husband.
After dinner we moved back out to the front of the boat because we had yet to see any whales. Wind was high and the captain was working to keep us from being uncomfortable, so he turned away from the sunset. It didn't end up being too disappointing because the sun went behind clouds and we didn't really miss anything. However he did find a a competition pod of about 10 whales - a whole bunch of boys vying for the attention of a lovely girl! :) Pretty cool to see so many together, but they don't do a whole lot you can see. Still....very cool!
This trip was not nearly as good as our first time, but we still actually really enjoyed being out on the water, loved the whales, the food was delicious, and we were together on vacation on a tropical island and got to watch the lights as we came into the harbor. I would do it again.
