Stayed in one of the three bedroom condos in the new tower. Amazing views on the lanai convinced us that dining at the condo was far superior than going out to a restaurant. The resort is complete with gorgeous grounds with refreshing pools and a wonderful sandy beach. Well stocked supermarket across the street is also very helpful.

Room Tip: Reserve a room on the beach side, the higher the better to ensure great sunset views. Use VRBO to r...

Our family spent the final 8 days of our three-week trip to the islands at this gorgeous condo/spa. We rented through Kaanapali Beach Rentals and the whole process was seamless. Also after a few days we found the unit was lacking a few amenities (nonstick frying pans, oven mitts a powerful hairdryer, toaster was broken) - with one call to KBR, all of the requested items (some brand new) appeared in our unit by day's end.

The 2 bedroom unit suited our family of four perfectly - two gorgeous full bathrooms, 3 TV's and a huge lanai for relaxing, viewing the mountains or the ocean for sunsets (we loved the outside unit away from the pool or parking lot view and noise - all we heard were birds!). The beds were comfortable and had the softest sheets and pillows ever!

Valet parking was worth it so there was no lugging beach stuff, golf clubs etc. to the parking garage - our car was brought to the front door for us each time. Worth the extra $5 per day.

While this was an extravagant rental for us it was worth every penny and we would do it again in a heartbeat if we ever visit Maui again - you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Choose an outside room with mountain view and partial oceanview. We were in Hokulani 520 and loved...

We have now visited Honua Kai 3 years in a row, and will return again. We have a 3yr old girl and a 5yr old boy so its perfect. :) The facility is top notch. The rooms are fantastic. For families, they are all bedroom sizes, and have kitchen and laundry We have typically rented a 2bdr, but have had family travel with us and they used 1bdr. (units are consistent) The 2bdr exceeded expectations in quality. Full kitchen, dishwasher, laundry, 2 full bathrooms and 3 flat screen TVs. Usually WiFi (pronounced wyfeey - go on name the movie :) ) is included so you can get 'on the line' (same movie). We have used a few rental companies, and had a good experience with all. The grounds are fantastic. The pools have something for every age, from small tottlers to young kids to adult grown up (quieter) areas. the lanais are great, but to bbq like most condo style places you need to go down to the common areas with your prepped food.
The parking underground is expensive, I believe something around 15USD a day. Learning as we go, we prob would just use the free lots - its not like we are protecting our rental from snow or harsh rain :) . The property has 1 main restaurant, Dukes, which is great. Full bar, plus 2 styles of dining areas. Good menu with an acceptable kids menu. Grown up drinks are spendy, too much for us to enjoy regularly.
The area around the property is pretty under developed. The Westin next door is nice, but we have never stayed there. That's about it. There is a small strip mall across the street that has a Times grocery store (if you didn't get everything from Costco by the airport) as well as a pizza joint (pretty decent za, it was fun to get a take away and eat it back at the beach / resort) as well as a great (very eclectic) coffee shoppe called Java Jazz. Parent tip. Its good coffee. And, it opens at 6AM, which helps with a) little kiddies that are not on HI time and are up super early and b) the H Kai coffee shoppe doesn't open until 7AM. I think the coffee at Java Jazz is better, and the atmosphere over there is super cool. Good food too. For the coffee nuts out there, the Coffee Shoppe in the H Kai draws shots called Ristretto, which is a shorter, more concentrated flavor coffee. Bottom line, your espresso is smaller, and tastes stronger. Not like Starbucks :).
Parent Tip. Get your kids (4 and up) to try SNUBA in the pool. Its like scuba but the tanks are in a dingy floating in the pool and a 20ft hose connects to their face mask. Amazing. Free. Every day between 11-12. Our kids LOVED it and started going every day. They intend to get you into it there to get you to buy into the services where they take you out to the ocean. Those are pricey.
Things we have done when we stayed there. :
-All the pools, and the waterslide.
-Plenty of beach time - right outside the pool area, easy to get to with all the Sherpa activity of kids toys etc.
-Drive north to the Nakalele Blow Hole. Its worth it from H Kai. Only a few miles north, easy to get to, and pretty cool. (link) http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g29220-d672529-Reviews-Nakalele_Blowhole-Maui_Hawaii.html
- Napili Beach - on the way to the Blow Hole. Great little beach, awesome surf. Careful of the tides. Full on Baywatch life guard tower to interest the kids or those looking for a Hoff sighting (no Pamela)
- The Reef Dancer - ( link http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60634-d1123731-Reviews-Reef_Dancer-Lahaina_Maui_Hawaii.html) Lots of fun, well worth it, but a few of our family got nauseous under the water in the boat. Ill write a review of that as well. Its just in Lahaina so its close
- Whale Watching - we use the local research company in Lahaina called Pacific Whale Foundation. (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g815379-d519580-Reviews-Pacific_Whale_Foundation-Maalaea_Maui_Hawaii.html) WELL WORTH IT.
- Cheesburgers in paradise - Lahaina . Great food open air restaurant
- Hard Rock Cafe Lahaina - good Hard rock, nice new location.
- Bubba Gumps place. Id go to the others listed here first.
- Surf or Paddle Boarding - well worth it, watch out for sharks. My wife had a sighting
- Maui Aquarium - save for a rainy day, or short day trip to change it up.
-

Room Tip: all the rooms are great, decision points are number of bedrooms and island or ocean view.

We only stayed 3 nights on our multi-island visit to paradise. We rented through a private owner and it was much cheaper. Incredible value, incredible views incredible resort… just enough creature comforts next in with the incredible beaches and views of Lenai to Molokai Marking it down for coming back soon.

Unbelievable resort and fabulous unit. Second time staying at hokulani 248 and third time at honua kai. The resort is perfect. Many pools - beautiful beach - top notch amenities. My family of six are just leaving and we can't wait to come again. This place is perfect. Absolutely stunning unit with amazing ocean view. Very large to accommodate 4 adults and 2 children. Unit is equipped with everything you need. Dukes is great and times supermarket is a short walk away to purchase steaks and other groceries. Plenty of Viking bbqs available on the resort to use. Everything is high end here. Kaanapali beach rentals are amazing property managers who provide you with an exceptional experience. We will be booking this unit again as it is one stack away from the pools and has amazing views. Dinner on the lanai is just amazing as you get to enjoy the beautifully lit tiki torches along the pools while enjoying the mountain view and breeze. The only negative is that we are sad to leave again. We love this unit and the resort. Aloha!

We stayed for a week in January 2014 and booked a 3 bedroom apartment. Note that apartments seem to be all privately owned and you can book through local agents as well as the resort and it is much cheaper through the agents. We booked through Kaanapali Beach Rentals - someone from that company met us at the property at check in time rather than going through the reception. I probably wouldn't describe the site as a resort - only because as the units are owned privately the facility doesn't have say room service or an actual restaurant but there is a Dukes bar/restaurant located on the property. Our units was fantastic - the bedrooms are all suitable for separate couples as everyone has their own bathroom and TV - also a very good kitchen and deck. The property has a great pool set up with a series of pools that are linked. We used the concierge to arrange a few activities and they were very good. Being from Australia, we are used to very good, white sandy beaches with good waves and the only negative I can find is that for us the beach was pretty average, with brown sand and the water had a few rocks/reefs just off shore so we didn't really swim there. However, snorkling is OK straight off the resort and as a general comment none of the beaches in Maui are that great. We also visited the golf and followed Adam Scott for the day. Suggest that you need to rent a car at the airport when staying in Maui - we used ours every day to go to activities or shopping.

Room Tip: We were in 503 - hence at the end and had a good view from the balcony. Rooms in the 20's seemed...

RUN don't walk to making your reservation at Honua Kai. It is absolutely perfect in every way.

Tip: VRBO a room from one of the owners. There are tons of options available and it is actually less money than reserving straight through the hotel. The Owner we booked through was amazing. This way you also don't have to deal with a front desk, etc, for anything other than parking!
