“Best Family Place in Ka'anapali”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

The Honua Kai Resort and Spa was the best place for our family to enjoy all that Maui has to offer. Our two bedroom unit came with a great living room, balcony with an ocean view, full kitchen to feed a family of 5, and access to pools, beach and Dukes restraurant. The room and service was great and the concierge helped us plan out all of our entertainment needs. A grocery store is within walking distance and it's only a 10-minute drive to downtown Lahaina. It was all the comforts of home with a view of the Hawaiian islands and maid service. I can't imagine a better place to stay.

We stayed at the Honua Kai Resort for our honeymoon. They had a bottle of champagne delivered to our room as a welcome gift. The rooms (condos) are huge and very nicely decorated - very modern and clean. The resort by all means is gorgeous; however, when you pull in and walk to the lobby you get a huge whiff of the sewage plant that is across the street (we didn't know it was there until we pulled into the parking lot). Only other downfall is the $25 per day resort fee.

We traveled August 21-26 and in the rush to pack and get to the airport on the 26th we did not return home with our Canon SLR camera. The camera is black and silver and It was in a black camera bag with a video camera and extension lens. If anyone has seen this camera please let us know! We lost all of our family vacation pictures! That being said, Honua Kai is in a great location and absolutely beautiful. It was windy the last few days we were there so we had to stay in the pool or get out and dry off quickly! The reason I am not giving the resort 4 or 5 stars is mainly due to the customer service and cleanliness of the rooms and pools. I think if the resort can work on these two issues it could definitely be a 4 or 5 star!

Honua Kai has sub contracted out to so many third party operators you can forget about care and responsibility. Not sure who does (or doesn't do) the maintenance but whoever it was failed to tighten the screws around the light fitting in the pool and when my son stood on the protruding screw - OUCH!!! The sole of his foot was badly lacerated and when he got out of the pool with blood streaming from his foot no one wanted to know! The first guy told him he was just there to sell sunglasses, the next to sell other souvenirs and the third to take orders for Dukes Restaurant. Eventually a kind guest helped carry him to a chair and someone called for first aid. It took about 20 minutes for someone to arrive with an inadequate kit but the nice man managed to disinfect and put plasters on the 3cm cut and protect the loose, flap of skin.
The man assured me he did not need stitches so no further medical intervention was deemed necessary. It did however spoil our holiday as the surfing, sea water and hiking aggravated the injury and we were forced to give up.
When I wrote to Hanua Kai it took 2 letters, photos, phone calls and 25 days to get a response - and they denied any duty of care!
Hanua Kai looks great in the pics but the smell of sewerage from the treatment plant across the road isn't conveyed and undermines the ambience greatly.
If you do still want to book, find a local realtor to rent to you at less than half their rate. Enjoy - until something goes wrong!

Room Tip: Be aware that the 'mountain' view features the sewerage plant and the sea view is exorbitant...

Our family recently stayed at the Honua Kai Resort and Spa Aug 19th - 25th. Upon arriving and getting out of the rental car we were hit with a foul, POO smell. It was really heavy. We checked in and the smell became worse as we walked down our hallways. Luckily, our unit did not smell, but if you opened the patio door, the terrible smell came back. The entire day we wondered and complained to each other about the smell. "Maybe they fertilized?" As it turns out a SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT is located at the entrance of this resort - it is the source of the poo smell in the air and the entire resort. The first three days of our vacation smelled so bad that we could not sit on our balcony (which we paid extra for the partial ocean view) and when at the pool you had to ignore or just hold your nose. My kids complained so much that we drove to Wailea Beach and spent a day there and spent the third day paying to swim at the Westin Resort. During this time I came to discover that the Honua Kai Resort and Spa does NOT have a spa. Matter of fact, they do not even have any programs with other hotel Spa's in the area. It is in "future" plans. So for years now they have been advertising a Spa without a spa. So there went any stress relieving massages for Mom. By the end of the third day there, some winds came in just the right way and blew the poo smell away. We enjoyed our last two windy days there. I spoke with the manager upon leaving requesting a discount of one nights stay for the unpleasant surprise smell, lack of spa and no ability to open our door or see the ocean while in our unit. I was told "NO". I understand, if they comped everyone who complained about the Poo smell, they would probably go out of business. BUT, we all come a really long and expensive route to get to Maui. A traveler would never expect to ask are there sewage plants next door that smell up the entire area? So, I think it is only fair that future guests know this fact in advance. If you are smell sensitive, this is not the place for you. If you are willing to deal with the odor, than at least you know what to expect. I have been to Hawaii four times now and never experienced anything like this. On the positive, it is a beautiful resort. I loved my room. I loved the food at Dukes. Would I come back? Maybe. Only for a really inexpensive rate full knowing that there may be days I need to spend at other resorts or beaches due to the smell. Forget paying for the ocean view, you may not get to enjoy it. I would also like to let travelers know that the beach at Honua Kai is not a boogie boarding beach. It is all coral reef. Great for snorkeling, but you must have water shoes or you will tear up your feet. There is very little place to swim without touching the reef. And if you want a beach chair or umbrella it will cost you $10 a piece. This is not included in your $25 daily resort fee. The resort provides many items such as snorkel gear, $25 water shoes that you really need, rafts, etc all at a cost. This was the first time my hotel stay did not include a beach chair. I wish I would have known this before my trip. I hope it is helpful in making a good choice for you and your family.

Ok, here's the UGLY truth here. This property is stunning in every way, EXCEPT, there's a sewerage plant RIGHT BEHIND IT and when the wind blows from the mountain, the smell of poop will make you puke. It'a a nightmare. The hotel pumps perfumed air into the lobby and out front t the car park. I'm telling you, when the window blows, it's like standing in a pile of poop.
Its a crying shame, because the hotel is so nice. WHY DID THEY PUT THIS HERE????

Room Tip: Do not stay here unless you love the smell of raw sewerage.

We rented a condo through VRBO. Based on the reviews, we knew we wanted to stay at Honua Kai. My wife and I spent an inordinate amount of time researching the various units. For the end of August, rates ranged from $200-$600 per night depending on whether one sought a studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom. The winner was – Konea 206. This unit is advertised as a one-bedroom with a den, but has been converted into a two-bedroom since the “den” has a queen-sized bed, door, closet, tv, etc… We were less interested in the lanai view and more interested in a place that could comfortably fit the family without forcing the kids to sleep in the same bed. Well, Konea 206 was PERFECT. We spent about $2100 for seven nights, which included the cleaning fee. The unit is immaculate. The booking process with the owner was seamless. Kaanapali Beach Rentals provided SUPERB customer service prior to and during our stay. If you Google Konea 206, you’ll see photos and get a list of amenities. We would absolutely return to this unit – and were quite sad to leave it.

Outside of Konea 206, Honua Kai captured the essence of Maui. It was beautiful. You felt like you were in Maui when you wandered the grounds. That cannot be said of all condo/hotel properties. The property was beautifully maintained. Others have lamented the foul odor emanating from the nearby sewage treatment plant. Well, the winds were blowing from every possible direction during our stay, and we did not notice it very much. My wife said she detected a sulfur odor for a few minutes while on the beach. Whatever it was, it did not affect our trip at all. That is just our perspective and should be weighed with the other feedback.

There were four main pools. Some people have described an “adult pool.” There is no adult pool. The top pool is a quiet pool with signs posted accordingly. We enjoyed this pool with our kids – and ironically – the adults violated the quiet policy more than the kids. The “lazy river” isn’t really a lazy river – it is just a “C” shaped pool with 4-5 feet of water. We ordered food poolside from Duke’s twice – the prices were a little high – but you get that at all poolside restaurants. The food quality was better than the average pool fare.

As others have described, the beach by Honua Kai has excellent snorkeling, but is not by any means a swimming beach. We knew we could venture 5-10 minutes down the beach to Black Rock for better swimming and snorkeling. We were content where we were. The beach is somewhat thin, but how much sand does one really need? The beach was never crowded. It was quiet. The views of Lanai and Molokai were breathtaking. And you could see fish only 10-20 feet from shore. I am not sure the Honua Kai beach is a destination beach, but it should not discourage anyone from staying there.

The location of Honua Kai was perfect. There is a shopping center across the street with a Times Supermarket that had a very good selection of products. Good variety of stores – Tex-Mex, pizza, coffee, shaved ice, BBQ, Snorkel Bob’s, swimwear and more. We were a 10-minute drive to Kahana/Napili/Kapalua, a 5-minute drive to other Kaanapali resorts and Whaler’s Village and a 10-minute drive to Lahaina. It took 45 minutes to get to/from the airport. The drive to the summit of Haleakala took two hours on the nose – without any traffic.

Bottom line – we’d stay at Honua Kai again. No reason to look elsewhere.
