“Fantastic condo/resort accommodations! Kids loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

My wife took our 2.5 and 7 month old in February. We booked a 2 Bedroom, 2 Bath, Ocean View Room. When we first walked in the balcony faced the adjacent wing of the other side of the building so we weren't greeted with an ocean view. When we stepped towards the balcony we were able to see the gorgeous view of the ocean (obviously angled given the design of most ocean front hotels). I was worried that the view would be too far to really see the migrating whales since this is always a highlight when visiting Maui this time of year. We were not disappointed. Not only were we close enough to the water to enjoy the sights, there wasn't a second you would look at the ocean and not see a blow hole or breaching humpack. Just fantastic! The room was very large and ample enough space for our family of 4. We kept saying that another couple/family could easily accommodate the space as well (this was the only ocean view available to us during our timeframe so we booked it). The furnishings were excellent and my wife and I could not stop talking about how comfortable the mattresses were. We received daily packs of dishwashwer and laundry detergent which was super convenient. The room has a large interior and balcony table to accommodate a large number of people. Every day we enjoyed our meals on the patio enjoying the view. The pools were great as well. Our 2.5 year old did not want to come out of the 1 foot toddler pool and Mom loved the adjacent hot tub. Ate at Dukes one evening and made the mistake of taking a table on the patio to avoid the wait. We had to take our food to go because the wind was blowing our salad leaves off of our plates. Overall fantastic resort and highly recommend!

We stayed here in September 2012. The rooms were extremely well kept and spacious, as were the grounds and pools of the property. The supermarket is right next door so very convenient to stock up on arrival - we had breakfast on our terrace and the occasional lunch, and we saw many people having dinner on an evening. You will need to have a car to drive to most other restaurants, and the sites but it is definitely worth it. It was windier than further down the coast, but in September it was really still just a breeze, which i appreciated on warmer days and especially at night (note - bring a light cardigan for the evenings).

Room Tip: An ocean view is definitely worth it as you get both the sunrish and sunset from most rooms. The mou...

We have just arrived for a return visit, luckily for 3 weeks this time and awoke to not only a sunrise rainbow this morning from our Lanai (deck) but numerous whale families were breaching in the foreground, OMG.

Would strongly recommend Brooke with Harris Property Management very responsive, friendly, helpful and even met us personally in the lobby last night to help us check into 713 a privately owned unit one of 20 some that he manages in the complex.

Don't miss the whale watching trips with Pacific Whale Foundation also, they are the best on-island!

So much nicer than the 8 degrees we left at home!

Paradise indeed.

Room Tip: The buildings are designed in a U shape so most all rooms have great ocean views.

We stayed at Honua Kai for our 10th anniversary and absolutely loved it. The 1-bedroom unit was spacious, and the kitchen perfect for filling in the gaps when we didn't want to go out for a meal. The grounds of the resort were beautiful, and the pool area was an absolute paradise for my then 5-year-old daughter, who learned how to swim there. Staff was friendly and helpful. We also really enjoyed the resort restaurant.

A few tips:
* Do not book your activities at the resort through the concierge. They charge full price, and you're likely to find discount tickets at kiosks/stores throughout Lahaina.
* Buy your groceries at Costco in Kahului, including meat/fish -- prices are outrageous at local stores (for most things). Only thing reasonable locally seemed to be alcohol (wine, beer, etc.)
* Go to a luau (Feast at Lele was expensive, but worth it)
* Go to the volcano to see the sunrise, but make sure you bring your winter jackets!
* Go on the Road to Hana, but remember it's the journey not the destination
* Book your trip for 10 days -- perfect length, especially with the full travel day on either end of the trip

The whole resort is fabulous. Beautiful accomodatons, the most friendly staff ever, organic market on location, the beach is beautiful but rougher waves and wind in the winter months. The bed was soooo comfortable the only reason I got out of bed was to see sunrise from my fabulous lanai. My son is 4 and he loved the boogie boards, snorkling and scuba lessons in the pool, the waterslide & hot tubs. Totally kid friendly pools. Also quite adult pools for relaxation. I'd stay again.

Room Tip: Studio has great pull out sofa bed for one or two kids.

We just spent two weeks at the Honua Kai (room 824) and LOVED every minute of it!
Location- Perfect. Right in the heart of Lahaina and on Kanapali beach. Close to everything and the Times grocery store is just a quick walk away!
Facility-Rooms were amazing. Everything was done really well and it just a well built place. Huge lanai, great kitchen with high end appliances and a huge bathroom. Everything about the room was perfect. The building and the grounds are also amazing. Extremely clean and beautiful.
Beach-The beach is beautiful and it was amazing to swim with sea turtles and watch the whales, however since Kanapali is on a reef it is very rocky so not ideal for swimming.
We loved Honua Kai and truly appreciated the outstanding service from Kanapali Beach Rentals. We will definitely be back!

I travel a lot for work and have the opportunity to stay at nice hotels. In Maui I have stayed at the Sheraton Kaanapali and The Grand Wailea many times. This was my first stay at Honua Kai and let me tell you I will be going back! It had everything you wanted and was a great price!

We stayed in a 3 bedroom suite. The rooms were spacious, had all the amenities you need, the kitchen was fully equiped. It was great to not only have a kitchen but have a dining area and porch that you want to hang out in! We had breakfast and lunch there almost every day which helps save some money and went out each night for dinner.

There is a nearby food store that has everything you need. You can walk there. The on property Market, Aina, is great too but pricey. Dukes is the on property restaurant. We only ended up there once but it was good.

The beach is beautiful but does have some reef to watch out for. Is best to go slightly to the left of the resort for swimming where you can avoid the reef geting in and out. We saw tons of whales from the beach. We did paddleboarding right from the hotel beach (recommend going in the morning before it is too windy). It does get windy most afternoons and can really pick up.

The pools are nice. We were in the H building which is more conducive to families I think. The pools there were better suited towards kids. The other buidling seemed more subdue and it has the quiet pool.

Everyone at the hotel was really nice. Took one of the exercise classes and was happy with it.

Honestly I am a tough critic and not sure what I can really critize. For us it was perfect!

Rated Spa Low below because there is no spa ;) Take the trip to the Grand Wailea across the island. It is worth it! Amazing Spa!

Rated Sleep Quality just very good because the pull out couch mattress was pretty slim. Would not have wanted anyone but kids on it.

Room Tip: We stayed in a 3 bedroom sutie - H103 -highly recommend this room if you have kids. It is ground le...
