“Superb Honeymoon made magical by westin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2009

My new wife and I checked into this hotel a bit concerned with some of the reviews, but that wasnt a worry at all after only 10 minutes.

Check in was superb and really personal as we got congratulations of the reception staff and told some hawaiin traditions for newly weds, like which side to wear your flowers :)

When we went up to the room we were amazed!, we had been upgraded to one of the luxury rooms with a superb almost 360 view of the ocean over the whalers village. The room was superbly decorated and looked very fresh. The bathroom was amazing and had a large selection of free toiletries which my wife became addicted to :D

But the number one thing about the room had to be the bed! it was so comfortable and huge and from lying in it you could look right out at the pacific and hear it lapping against the shore.

Within 10 minutes of being in our room we were brought a complimentary bottle of champagne and flowers from reception as a gift for our honeymoon along with a loverly personalised note wishing us all the best.

The layout of the hotel is amazing, just walking around at night and listening to the birds and taking in the breathtaking sunsets is something that will stay in our minds forever.

Food wise the place is expensive, but then that seems to be the case with everywhere in Maui but you wont be dissapointed, the tapas style is lovely and the breakfast turkey wraps are the nicest breakfast we ever tried period!

All in all this hotel is in an absolutely superb location with superb staff, views, rooms and facilities. We never experienced any rudeness or screaming children or anything resembling what a few people here have mentioned.

A lot of the time I reckon it depends upon the reviewer and if one small thing occurs they may let this affect their entire holiday.

One final mention has to go to the diving school that operate in the hotel, the training lesson is superb and the diver is so professional and makes sure you get a good session and see some amazing things. Remembering hearing whales talk while diving will always make smile.

A+

Our stay at the Westin has been our worst & most disappointing in several years. Checking in was cold & very impersonnel. First time a hotel wasn't prepared to accept my Visa card as it was a debit card. In the end they did as it was that or nothing. The receptionist ignored us and spoke in another language to another person in the queue behind us. That was our introduction to the Westin & it just went downhill from there. Rooms tired, small, our first room was noisy as it was next to the lift & sounded like an electric sander was being used in our room, in the end we were given a room with 2 double beds - small double beds - not something we expected for the our anniversary. Air cond was noisy, a repair man arrived to fix it even though we never reported the problem, phone continually flashed as if it had a message but it didn't, safe was not working when we arrived, carpet dirty, worn & stretched, furniture worn. Lifts were frequently out of order. Booked for the Luau with a warning that we would be charged if we didn't go to the show but after queuing for over 40 minutes we were advised our name hadn't been included on the list. After speaking to a manager it was sorted out., with numerous apologises. We left very tired not at all relaxed as their ads would suggest. Never before were we ready to leave in a bid to get a comfortable nights sleep. We've stayed in a lot of hotels & this would be one of our poorest experiences. Choose elsewhere if you can.

We had a fabulous time. This was a trip from my husband to celebrate me turning 50 and being a five year cancer survivor. Yes it is an average resort. We stayed here knowing that this was an older resort. He choose a premium ocean view room. We had a great view of the pool and the ocean. He booked directly on line and got a fair price considering it is Maui. The location is incredible and we found most of the staff to be friendly and helpful. Extra towels, water, shampoo, pillows - no problem. Yes the parking is tight, however we always found a space and if you can't they will valet your car.

We choose the adult pool every day and only had a hard time finding chairs on July 4th and we found them with minimal effort. The staff was monitering those who left and did not return within an hour. We left to get breakfast and came back with a note on our chair. They would have picked up our towels and books 25 minutes later. We never experienced any issues with children. Even in the elevators the children were very well behaved.

Is the food expensive - yes. However, there is both a Costco and Safeway on the way to the resort and a refrigerator in the room. There is also an ABC store next door to the resort. Along with a food court. We bought some items at ABC that were very reasonable. Once again, since this was a treat we indulged within reason. We ate the breakfast buffet once and then decided to split an omelet on other days. Ask for the ocean view side. We ate at Barefoot Bar ( food ok - sunset magnificent) and then other places on the island the rest of the meals.

We did a sunset cruise on both the Teralini and Gemini. They both were on the beach outside of the Westin. The Gemini is recommended by the Westin. We knew they had internet specials and both honored the discounted prices even though we called instead of booking on line. We preferred going direct instead of using the hotel conceirge.

I would highly recommend this for the location and the beach. We walked up and down and found that the Westin has the best beach area.

I was paying $400 per night at Westin, so I was expecting it to be like other Westins - great. It was nice. The standard rooms were more than just "standard," they were rooms that I would not pay more than $150 for it. Small, dirty, and awful bathroom.

On the brighter side, the spa was EXCELLENT. Lots of pools, right on the beach. Though, I can get pools and beach for a lot less.

Overall, I was disappointed.

The reason why I say Hot & Cold is because of the pool area. We found the stone around the pool area to be burning hot while the pool water to be quite cool. Felt like the pool water temperature to be under 80 degrees. So if you're barefoot you pretty much have to come off the stone and jump straight into the cold water. The only other down side to this resort was the small room size and if you self park that could be a slight problem. There aren't that many spaces and the spaces are rather small. Other than that it was great. Comfortable bed, warm shower, plenty of towels. Refrigerator was stocked daily with fresh bottles of water. Coffee was replenished daily. Flat widescreen HDTV. Internet service. Good sized gym. Pool had new, comfortable lounge chairs. Right at the beach with beach activities, short walk to Whaler's Village next door, good food. And the service was super. They have a separate computer in the lobby area for guests to print their boarding passes for their return flight. The computer wasn't on at 10 PM when we had to print ours, but they helped us at the front desk and printed them out there. We liked it enough for this to be our second stay there.

My daughter graduated with honors from high school and did not want a party or any kind of celebration for her graduation present. Instead she chose a 10 day trip to Hawaii. I have been fortunate to have trveled to many places in the world and Hawaii was one place I never had much interest in visiting. I was pleasantly surprised by the natural beauty of the place and by the incredible volcanos. The Westin was perfect for this type of trip. Friends recommended the Four Seasons and I felt as if this was a little too romantic for me and my teenage daughter. The Westin was great because it was luxurious, on the beach and was in a perfect location. My daughter and I are foodies and we found so many incredible restaurants nearby. We rented a car and went to Lahaina, many memorable restaurants, one of which was the Plantation Restaurant in Kapalua. The fish tacos at Lelani's were wonderful for lunch and the Hula Grill (same owner) was a favorite too. Both are steps away from the Westin. Make sure you ask for the robes at the Westin. Be advised that the Westin charges $25 per day for the amenities. Personally, this charge should be included in the room charge. I don't think the added charge makes any sense because you have to pay it. A little trick is there are only 10 beach umbrellas so if you want to sit on the beach under an umbrella get to the desk by the beach by 8 AM and they open it up at 8:30 AM. There are always 10 people there by 8:30 AM so get there early. The food at the Westin is pricey for the quality and there are so many great nearby restaurants that I would highly recommend venturing out. The beds are super comfortable and we had a room with a golf mountain view. We hardly were in our room and we paid much less for this splendid view. It was beautiful. We also booked a sunset cruise at the Westin and loved it. It was a wonderful stay and we loved the talking birds while enjoying our morning coffee.

If you have a family with children, you're going to love this hotel. There's a slide at the pool and birds & fish in the lobby. If you're a childless couple looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway -- this hotel is not for you. We were so unable to relax, we left mid-stay and went to the Four Seasons in Wilelia. Some details:

The pool area is a zoo. It's a free-for-all when it comes to finding chairs; most people head down by 8am to stake claim for their family for the entire day. There's no pool-side staff to help you find chairs or enforce "vacant" chairs. What's remaining (if anything) are undesirable chairs, in the bright sun, next to screaming children. The pool area is also a mess; there's service items and old towels strewn everywhere. It smelled like urine one day. There is an adult-only pool, but there are so few chairs that there's never anything open. The sounds of screaming children permeate this area as well. You also need to check-in and check-out towels from a towel shack -- with the threat of being charged if you don't check-in your towels at the end of the day. Huh?

You can get a somewhat relaxing experience by getting a beach cabana. It's not really a cabana -- it's a two seat deck chair with a retractable awning. Unfortunately, they're $60 for the day, and guess what: there's always a screaming kid nearby. You can snag a chair & umbrella on the beach for $15, but they're first-come first-serve, and are filled-up by breakfast.

The food at the poolside restaurant & the main hotel restaurant Tropica were average to below average.

The spa facilities were clean and above average, but the actual services (stone massage) were below average.

The Beach Tower room was passably clean, but not actually clean. Felt like it needed a spring cleaning.

The front desk staff was hit or miss. When you got a nice person, they were terrific. When you got a cranky one, boy were they cranky.

Free parking wasn't free at all: the cost was headaches and not enough spaces. I conceded to $15/day valet to not stress over this.

All in all, this hotel was what you'd expect for a Westin that was adjacent to a Convention Center or a business district in a city: decent and dependable. But when you plant it beachfront in Maui, and price & market it like a five star resort -- it adds up to an underwhelming experience.
