“The Westin Exceeded my expectations!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2009

My daughter graduated with honors from high school and did not want a party or any kind of celebration for her graduation present. Instead she chose a 10 day trip to Hawaii. I have been fortunate to have trveled to many places in the world and Hawaii was one place I never had much interest in visiting. I was pleasantly surprised by the natural beauty of the place and by the incredible volcanos. The Westin was perfect for this type of trip. Friends recommended the Four Seasons and I felt as if this was a little too romantic for me and my teenage daughter. The Westin was great because it was luxurious, on the beach and was in a perfect location. My daughter and I are foodies and we found so many incredible restaurants nearby. We rented a car and went to Lahaina, many memorable restaurants, one of which was the Plantation Restaurant in Kapalua. The fish tacos at Lelani's were wonderful for lunch and the Hula Grill (same owner) was a favorite too. Both are steps away from the Westin. Make sure you ask for the robes at the Westin. Be advised that the Westin charges $25 per day for the amenities. Personally, this charge should be included in the room charge. I don't think the added charge makes any sense because you have to pay it. A little trick is there are only 10 beach umbrellas so if you want to sit on the beach under an umbrella get to the desk by the beach by 8 AM and they open it up at 8:30 AM. There are always 10 people there by 8:30 AM so get there early. The food at the Westin is pricey for the quality and there are so many great nearby restaurants that I would highly recommend venturing out. The beds are super comfortable and we had a room with a golf mountain view. We hardly were in our room and we paid much less for this splendid view. It was beautiful. We also booked a sunset cruise at the Westin and loved it. It was a wonderful stay and we loved the talking birds while enjoying our morning coffee.

If you have a family with children, you're going to love this hotel. There's a slide at the pool and birds & fish in the lobby. If you're a childless couple looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway -- this hotel is not for you. We were so unable to relax, we left mid-stay and went to the Four Seasons in Wilelia. Some details:

The pool area is a zoo. It's a free-for-all when it comes to finding chairs; most people head down by 8am to stake claim for their family for the entire day. There's no pool-side staff to help you find chairs or enforce "vacant" chairs. What's remaining (if anything) are undesirable chairs, in the bright sun, next to screaming children. The pool area is also a mess; there's service items and old towels strewn everywhere. It smelled like urine one day. There is an adult-only pool, but there are so few chairs that there's never anything open. The sounds of screaming children permeate this area as well. You also need to check-in and check-out towels from a towel shack -- with the threat of being charged if you don't check-in your towels at the end of the day. Huh?

You can get a somewhat relaxing experience by getting a beach cabana. It's not really a cabana -- it's a two seat deck chair with a retractable awning. Unfortunately, they're $60 for the day, and guess what: there's always a screaming kid nearby. You can snag a chair & umbrella on the beach for $15, but they're first-come first-serve, and are filled-up by breakfast.

The food at the poolside restaurant & the main hotel restaurant Tropica were average to below average.

The spa facilities were clean and above average, but the actual services (stone massage) were below average.

The Beach Tower room was passably clean, but not actually clean. Felt like it needed a spring cleaning.

The front desk staff was hit or miss. When you got a nice person, they were terrific. When you got a cranky one, boy were they cranky.

Free parking wasn't free at all: the cost was headaches and not enough spaces. I conceded to $15/day valet to not stress over this.

All in all, this hotel was what you'd expect for a Westin that was adjacent to a Convention Center or a business district in a city: decent and dependable. But when you plant it beachfront in Maui, and price & market it like a five star resort -- it adds up to an underwhelming experience.

Definitely love the location have stayed here 4 times over the years. However really it comes down to the room you get. The newer tower is the Ocean Tower and the rooms are significantly larger (I'd approximate by 30%) over the older tower. FYI: The older tower is the building with the main entrance. Ocean view rooms are better in the older tower fro noise purposes these have even numbered room numbers. Odd numbers face the parking lot and the NOISE of people coming and going and car alarms etc. I've lucked out with rooms and really have only continued to stay here because the staff has been gracious and willing to swap rooms etc. to help me minimize noise issues. Kudos Westin Maui Team! Anyway a few other tips..the resort fee (currently $25) is a deal given it includes internet access, self parking, the gym and two bottle of water each day. So at first i was a bit miffed at this fee but given what it includes think it's fair.
The Ocean Tower can suck if you have a room facing away from the pool towards Whaler's village (odd numbered rooms) as you get the restaurant "smell" - think sizzling steak aroma. So long story short (OK too late for that) don't get an ODD numbered room at this resort.

We booked our trip through Expedia and were expecting a Premium Deluxe Room with ocean view. We expected to be over the pool area in the Beach Tower but were surprised to get room 890 at the end of the building which had a fabulous full view of the beach from the spacious and very private lanai. The room was spacious for the two of us and was very clean every day. It had a hide-a-bed and could have easily accomodated two more people. The staff were all very friendly and helpful at all times. We really enjoyed the location of the hotel next to Whaler's Village and several restaurants. The beach walk was very nice for late evening strolls. We loved the adult pool area with the bar and quieter atmosphere. We rarely had problems finding lounge chairs at the pool. No, we didn't go save a chair at 4 am either. Our package came with the buffet breakfast which was excellent. Get the ocean view seating, it's beautiful! The grounds were always clean as well as the lobby. In the afternoon they put a dispenser with ice water and lemons in the lobby area which is very refreshing in the heat.
Parking is tight, but we had little to no problem finding a spot. It would be helpful if the people with the Chargers and Mustangs would put some effort in parking straight, but we managed with our little PT Cruiser.
The beach is great, very clean and the water is unbelievably beautiful.
Don't hesitate to stay here. We can't wait to come back.

We just got back today from a one week stay at the Westin Resort.
$420 a day room in addition to a daily State tax, Resort tax, Excise tax, and misc. taxes brought it to $500 a day wihtout any room charges. This is called the 'Standard Room'.

Here are the lows:
- Remote control didn't work...no big deal...they replaced it.
- We went to turn on the lamp, no knob...no big deal...they replaced it.
- The refrigerator ( no bigger than the single waste paper basket in the room) went on the blink and vibrated and rattled throughout the first night. They came the next day and replaced it.
- The double shower head in a very small bathroom, was so loosely fitted, it would easily break if you tried to adjust it as evident by the globs of glue around the fittings.
- Stains on the rug but as we were told, it's from years of usage.
- 3 large cock roaches in the lobby but that's to be expected from the tropical climate I was told.
- You do not get your moneys worth if you include your room and food.

Picky stuff:
- It didn't feel right having the bathroom sink in the bedroom.
- The furniture was inadequately sized for the small room.
- Very dim light in the bathroom.
- Hard to find floor button in the elevator due to lighting.
- Very small balcony.
(They told us this was an upgraded room...we were afraid to see what the room we paid for actually looked like)

High points:
- Great pools!
- Beautiful lobby and grounds.
- Attentive staff.

Bottom line: You get a $100 worth of a room and a $400 lobby and pools for your $500 tab. If you expect to pay $7.00 for hot dogs, $6.50 for a bottle of beer and $4.50 for a grande drip, you will enjoy the resort life. If you don't mind the $5.00 per charge for a beach chair (olus 21 cents State tax per chair) and being charged for the use of the beach umbrella, you'll enjoy the beach.

We stayed in room 588 in the Beach Tower June 12 - 26. We had a wonderful view of the pool and the ocean. The room was a luxury suite with a hudge bathroom and a wonderful hot tub inside. I would definitely recommend upgrading to a suite if you are staying for a week or longer. We saw a regular room in the Beach Tower and it was not big enough. With the economy being in a slump, the Westin will work with you on an upgrade. The room service was average at best, altough they did clean the suite daily. We had a package with the breakfast buffet and it saved us $50.00 per day and the food was excellent. We dined at both of the hotel's restaurants and the food was very good. I do recommend the restaurants in Whalers Village, which is located next to the Hotel. No matter which reastaurant you choose, with dinner and a coulple of drinks be prepared to spend $100.00. The location at the Westin is unbeatable. You have easy access to a wonderful Beach and great shopping at Whaler's Village. I am so glad we chose the Westin over the Hyatt and Sheraton. For a convienence matter, the other hotels should not be an option. The pool at the Westin is definitely colder than the average pool, although it sure felt great after a hot long day. There are a bunch of kids and families that stay at this Hotel. You will see small children every direction you turn around, which did not bother us much because we love kids. The best experience was defintely the lovely suite. We did not really have a bad experience, although service was average at best. We would definitely recommend the Westin due to it's location and vibrant atmosphere. Parking was not an issue like a lot of other reviews stated. In two weeks we never had to use valet or park elsewhere.

This review is geared for SPG members w/young children. I booked the Kanaapali Sheraton on pts. but when checking in I was stuck w/a garden view for my full stay of six nites. I should've spent xtra pts for an ocean view (prefer Bldg 3). This hotel is never sold out the week after school gets out mid-June, but they had a promo during this recession which explained my dilemna. Quickly called Starwood Platinum and booked on pts the Westin and rec'd a full credit from the Sheraton. Two ocean view rooms for my five children, wife and nanny. They were almost sold out too.
Prior to securing the two rooms w/Starwood, the Reception said they were sold out. Starwood said they had two ocean view rooms for six nites. Got two rooms on 9th of 11 floors. Last two nites got the upgrade to nice sweet and nearby room on the 11th (SPG Floor). We were in the Ocean Tower not Beach. The rooms are rather small but manageable. Free close parking. WiFi free in room. Resort next to Whaler's Village. Enjoyed the Hula Grill (happy hr 3-5pm). Favorite rest. was Pineapple Grill (Austr. lamb chops and Alaskan king crab, seared Ahi app). Kimo's is always fun in Lahaina. Best burgers in Lahaina is Cool Cat Cafe (lunch).
Always enjoy hitting the Napili Kai Resort at the Sea House Restaurant for breakfast overlooking the beach and then hitting the beach. Wesin's pool was better for the kids than the Sheraton. Great waterslide and pool. They hand out towels at 7am. Save them for next day to reserve lounges say 4am to 6am (no worries if you're still on CA time). Get 2-4 lounges under huge umbrellas at base of waterslide to view your children. Pick the two off to the far right. Doesn't matter if you get to the pool at noon if you save the lounge chairs w/towels and stuff. They fill up quick otherwise. Maui is always fun....enjoy
