“Nice place, but likely won't return”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2014

Let me state that this is a very nice hotel with friendly employees and nice surroundings. That said, however, we are likely not to return and I would rather give it a 3.5 instead. We just returned today from a week long vacation there, purchased earlier this year as part of a package deal through American Airlines Vacations (roundtrip air, rental car, and hotel for 7 days). While there was nothing technically "wrong" with the Westin, it just didn't fit the bill for us and what we are usually looking for. For instance, there are nowhere near enough parking spaces for the number of rooms that are in this hotel. Granted, they provide "free" valet parking but one usually feels obligated to tip $2-$3-$5 each time your car is brought to you. If you leave a couple of times during the course of the day (for instance, to go to another beach on the island during the day or out to dinner), you're going to pay $6-$10. Not a huge price for someone who can afford to go to Hawaii, sure, but it's the nickel and diming that gets old. The breakfast buffet is $28.95 per person and then when they bring you the check there is also a $4.95 "service charge" on the check...For what?!? It's a buffet! The snack bar beside the pool has pizza by the slice (for $6) or a whole pizza for $38.00, and large bags of popcorn for $6.75. Crazy. Unlike other nice hotels along Kaanapali Beach (i.e. Sheraton, Hyatt, Marriott), there is not a nice/upscale in house restaurant for dining on property during the evening; rather, your only option is Relish Burger Bistro with burgers and sandwiches. While there is an adult pool, it's not that large and is only 4 feet deep. The other pools are covered up with kids - something that couples may not find to their liking. The pools do not offer a lot in the way of privacy...no areas to get away from it all or cabanas for rental in a secluded kind of area; rather, they are all set out with the rest of the thousands of chairs. The hotel offers you an option to do the "green thing" and opt out of daily maid service and in exchange for this you are given a coupon outside your door each day worth either 500 Starwood Preferred Guest points of $5 toward dining or other hotel services. What they don't explain to you in any way is that on the 4th day, you're out of luck and they will come in your room to check things out. Leave your card on your door and they still don't give you a card for the 5th day, either. So over the course of a week the most we got was $20 or $2,000 Star points. I know I sound like a big complainer but really I/we are not. Read my other reviews and you'll find that we like most things. And we liked the Westin, too. However, for what we enjoy on a vacation and what works for us, it just didn't fit the bill. We liked the place but probably won't return.

After this trip, if we ever return back to Maui, it will not be at this hotel. Don't waste your time at the Concierge because they are just rude and unhelpful. It goes against what you expect people to be...living in a beautiful island, why is there a need to hate your job?! I will say, however, that the breakfast buffet was good each morning as well as the staff. The bar staff was also nice and friendly. No complaints there. Our room reminded me of a motel room where you have the sink outside of the bathroom. There were also handprints seen right in front of the toilet when we arrived (still there now). We had selected a partial ocean view...but what we saw most was the cement roof structure below our balcony. Our platinum SPG status did nothing at this hotel. Would recommend somewhere else if you are planning to stay in Maui.

Clean rooms. Great location. Nice pools .Friendly staff. Had ocean view rooms. Totally worth it.Flamingos,Neuman the Black Swan, the speaking cockatoo ,the parrots , and feeding the Koi fish were the highlight of the little one in the group. And the pool with water slides. Breakfast was wonderful. All in all, great place to stay. Will stay there again.

I did not stay at this hotel but recently spent a week at the nearby Westin Kaanapali villas. On our last day we decided to get a cabana on the beach and just chill out. It was 100% worth it and one of the best days on our trip. Great to have cold water and a shade if we needed to get out of the sun. In the afternoon they bring you pineapple. I wish I could relive the whole experience...

Disclaimer: I am a Starwood front desk associate so I know how things "should" be according to Westin/Starwood standards.

The resort itself was absolutely amazing. My mom and I were upgraded to a beautiful, new, ocean view room which was much appreciated. Jayson checked us in and couldn't have been nicer! He was welcoming and professional and made us very excited for our stay. The grounds were perfect, we loved everything from the room to the food to the ocean. Lorraine in Relish was great as well and made us feel special. The concierge are also helpful and very knowledgable.

The customer service everywhere else we encountered was lackluster and left us confused. We were allowed to retrieve our own bags from storage on a trust basis, which doesn't seem safe for people's belongings, and the pool rules are not enforced whatsoever. This was most disappointing. The "adult" pool is hardly that. There were kids all over the place and employees all around who turned a blind eye. Everyone in the jacuzzi was commenting on how it doesn't seem like "16 and up" age limit mattered. The water slide attendant was on his cell phone the whole time which allowed kids to be rowdy and dangerous when sliding. Hopefully no one gets hurt.

We woke up one morning at 215am to go to Haleakala for sunrise. We come downstairs and our car was blocked in by valet. There was no one to be found and it took twenty minutes for the situation to be fixed. The valet apologized however we were 20 minutes late because no one was at the front desk or valet, which isn't standard practice.

Overall the stay was great and I would definitely return, I just hope the associates can learn to like their jobs more and know that they can truly make or break someone's experience. Again, special thanks for Jayson and Lorraine for showing they care about guest experiences.

Westin Maui Resort and Spa is a classy top notch restort with friendly staff and perfect for a family. I went with my family with 2 other families for 5 night stay . The ambence was stunning with water falls , birds ( macaws, swans , flamingoes, african parrot ) , cat fishes and various flora. The water sports facility was avialable at the restort which was relatively inexpensive. The food was excellent , the restaurants tickled your pallets and the location was just ideal. just next door were 3 great restuarants to choose from . The whalers market is next door with boutique stores from designer to pop-mom shops. The rooms were clean and service every day. There is Starbucks within the resort.
The location is breathtaking and is on the beach itself. The most spectacular sunset view is from the lawns of hotels and you need go anywhere else. Sunsets crews and water sport activity are avialable on-site.

Had no complains and would go back again in a heart beat.We throughly enjoyed our stay and recommend this for all who have families.

Room Tip: Ocean view
