“Excellent amenities and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

This was our 2nd stay in the past 5 years. Outdoor space was still incredible. Glad to see rooms are being renovated as it is much needed. Staff was accommodating, ensuring our complete satisfaction with our room location. Staff in general were very gracious and friendly. Would stay again and continue to refer others.

I stayed 5 nights at the Ka'anapali Westin Hotel and Spa. Overall found the property to be great. Stayed in the Beach Towers in an Ocean View room. Westin has some great pools and spa facilities. There are lot of activities for the kids too. Reason for the average review is the very poor service at the Westin restaurants. We were disappointed both over dinner and breakfast and decided to skip the restaurants altogether after that. Quite a few servers lack training and don't have the serve with a smile attitude.

Room Tip: Beach tower rooms are the best as they are closest to the ocean

We made our reservation using SPG Points ... and the reservation process made it sound like we would be treated "like royalty" at this hotel. Getting to our room, with the back-end view of the recycling dump, close to the ongoing construction, was not exactly up to our expectations.

The room itself was fine, although our "heavenly bed" was quite saggy and the view, well ... what view?

Pools are amazing - location on the beach is great. Although one should be warned that the "resort fee" includes minimal amenities (basically bottled water, lounges by the pool and towels). Anything that is at all "luxurious" is quite a steep upcharge - but that is true of all resorts in the area.

For families, especially with little ones, its great. For a "romantic getaway" - not so much.

Room Tip: Bring your wallet ... like most resorts in the area, most everything is "extra."

We are delighted you enjoyed the resort’s pools and Ka’anapali Beach mere steps away. In addition to bottled water, the resort’s daily charges also include daily self-parking, high speed Internet access in guestroom, complimentary shuttle service to Lahaina town and Kapalua airport, portrait seating with Reflections Photography, access to Westin Workout open 24 hours and much more as listed in the resort’s website. We trust you enjoyed Maui and look forward to your return. Aloha!

When we approached the hotel I thought what a beautiful place, the grounds were nicely kept the lobby was open and well decorated, what a disappointment when we got to our rooms. We had booked an oceanfront premier suite with a connecting room in the Beach Tower, the connecting room was oceanfront and had a spacious lanai, the suite was horrible, the oceanfront portion had no lanai and you had to stand at the window to see the ocean / sunset, the lanai on the side faced Whaler's Village and the view was blocked by palm trees. When we complained, we were first told we could accept the room as is or downgrade??!! After asking for a manager we were finally given a different suite, upgraded but could no longer have a connecting room. My advice is to never get the premier oceanfront suite, you are much better off with 2 oceanfront rooms. The suites furniture was old and without color or character. The rooms were all a very dull beige as well as the linens, there was no island decoration or feel. The restaurants were good but having to fight off the birds became very distracting not sure if there is a remedy for this but sanitary wise it has to be an issue. Pools were wonderful and the beach was very nice. Overall I would stay again but I would choose my rooms more carefully. The suite we moved out of was room 291.

Room Tip: Choose a luxury oceanfront room as opposed to the Premiere Suites, the actual additional space is ne...

Although it received mixed reviews on this and another site, based on a co-worker's recommendation we decided to stay at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa. The valet service was exceptional, and the facility layout was everything we were led to believe it would be. In fact, housekeeping aside, (which could have been better), customer service in general was what you would expect from a resort with the Westin's reputation: exceptional. Except...

We stayed on the second floor in a "garden view" room. The room itself was very small, which wasn't a big deal. However, at 5:30 in the morning on our first night we were awakened by a loud, constant rattling noise coming through the ventilation duct. At first we thought it was the air conditioning, but realized it wasn't on. We checked the hallway outside our room and realized the noise was everywhere. We called the front desk, and the clerk said she'd have someone look into it. Fortunately our kids (12 & 15) were able to sleep through the noise, but my wife and I could not. It continued until 8:45 a.m.

We assumed the problem had been fixed, but the following morning at the same time it began again. Again, we were unable to sleep. And, again, the noise stopped at 8:45. Later that morning I went to the front desk and explained the problem, also pointing out that I brought it to someone's attention the previous day and nothing had been done. Again, I was told someone would look into it.

The following morning, it happened again. Finally my wife and I purchased ear plugs, which helped considerably, but did not eliminate the problem. I could go on, but needless to say it happened every night.

We knew that the hotel was being renovated several floors above us, (and possibly in a different wing at that), but were told it would not affect our floor. Given the type of noise and the regularity with which it occurred, I don't believe one was the result of the other. What really bothered us was the lack of concern shown for how disruptive it was, and the absence of any effort to make it right or move us to another room.

The plumbing was another issue, (loud banging in the pipes when the adjacent room used hot water), but that was short lived. (Westin did advise us - when we arrived, not in advance - that they would be working on plumbing. It was a minor inconvenience, at worst.)

The Westin really is a nice hotel, (great pools, kid-friendly, impressive lobby), but given our experience, our next stay will be elsewhere, (there are several other beautiful properties on the beach). Other parts of the hotel may be fine, (if you do choose Westin, avoid the second floor "garden view" rooms), but for the money, we were expecting much better.

Room Tip: Avoid the second floor garden view rooms

5 years ago this place was awesome...i've stayed here 4 times & every year gets more depressing. No more lei flowers, no more free smoothies at breakfast, no more legit shampoos and soaps, no more coffee mugs, no more exotic flowers at the check in desks, mold in the porous shower tiles, the buffet is awful now, scared to walk barefoot on their carpet, no more playing w/the birds, they're now in cages after someone fed the green one a plastic bag & it choked, the heart tree is cut down-apparently fell down-trust me it was awesome-the towels you now have to check in w/a card system-pain in the a, & the staff just straight up sucks-so rude-i think they hate the new management...and even the spa is not as nice..no more fresh fruits, juices, etc.. I understand that we're in a recession still but you can't consider yourself a 4 star hotel just out of location... bc the location is the only thing that deserves it. don't walk over to the hyatt, you will get sad walking back to the westin.. but the westin is at least w/in walking distance to the ono taco's at leilani's & paddle board rentals-shops-etc..the beds are nice-which is important, pineapple mike is AWESOME!! he's there until 11 selling maui gold pineapples & coconuts that you can send as post cards...lv him! & they do have a fish feeding time for the little one's at 9:30...also the pools are nice for kids, the hot tub could use some renovation-it's a little suspect-the westin is in the process of changing out the tropica restaurant to some sort of chain & they are starting to renovate some of the upper floors...they are extending a grassy area for business parties too-but i'm not sure about the beautiful fountain waterfall area they once had as you ate outside...they bleached it & it looks like a pickle -maybe it's being renovated- i hope so..anyway, there's free lemon water & a flower toothpick during late afternoon hours bc that's when everyone's checking in, & the valet guys are fun to talk to, but the parking lot is joke..it was designed for mini's ...most people park in 2 spots & if they run out of space then you can valet your car for free which is nice.. ohhh & like i said the buffet is nothing like it used to be so i'd avoid getting bent over for the 27 a person price tag and order the macadamia nut pancakes & a side of pineapple & i'd split it..& i'd order water...the beverages are not fresh which is the whole point of being in maui... i truly hope management is taking notes of my feedback! & i don't want the lame 7000 starwood points to sit through your time share presentation-what happened to the 100 gift card & fresh fruits... get it together westin!

We are truly sorry that your recent visit was not to your expectations. Based upon constructive feedback from valued guests such as your goodself, we had introduced new improvements such as replacing flower leis with shell leis for guests to take home as a special remembrance. We also built spacious shelters for the safety of our birds as you kindly mentioned. Additionally, Westin’s signature White Tea toiletries have received delightful praises and are ideal as carry-on amenities when traveling. Please know that we would definitely look into your recommendations and appreciate your continued loyalty. We hope to welcome you back to exciting transformations that include new dining experiences. Until then, malama pono (take care)!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

My wife and I vacationed at the Maui Westin Resort and Spa June 27th – July 3, 2013. At the time of booking, Tripadvisor reflected the hotel as a 1) A hotel which was liked by 72% of its previous travel residents B) A resort which that was rated 24 of 29 hotels in Lahaina and C) A property where the average ranking classified the hotel 4 of 5 stars our of ~2500 reviews. In my opinion, I feel the previous rankings/reviews and preferences accurately reflected my interpretation of the hotel (provided below):

PROS:

LOCATION-The hotel is next to Whaler’s village which has shopping, 2 restaurants, and a handful of fast food options. Westin Resort and Spa is also a few miles from Lahaina. Lahaina is an older, historical town on the ocean with dozens of restaurants, bars, boutiques, art shops, etc. Very cool area for dining and enjoying the sunset.

PROPERTY-The grounds were immaculate. My wife and I walked along the beach of the nearby properties (couple miles in each direction). The Westin Resort and Spa passed the eye test and was significantly better then surrounding properties (Hyatt &Westin Villas however both looked really nice as well).

FOOD: The hotel has great menu options (but pricey).

CONS:

PRICE: My wife and I spend the majority of our vacations in the Caribbean; typically all-inclusive “type” resorts. While we knew Hawaii would be different; the hotel’s hidden costs (spa fees, daily fees-wifi & parking, food costs) seemed a bit exploitative.

All-in-all, the Westin Resort and Spa was a nice hotel, had solid service, and passed the eye-ball test. While some of the previous (negative) reviews suggested; “the hotel looked tired, worn, & dated OR bad front desk service,” I don’t entirely feel those sentiments are accurate. The hotel was updated and the employees all seemed spirited. Where the ultimate drawbacks reside is around “price.” Inevitably, for the amount it costs, you just don’t get what you paid for. In comparison, and as mentioned above, my wife and I commonly spend ~$3000 (all-in: flight, hotel, food, excursions, vehicle rental, etc) on vacations much much nicer in the Caribbean (1. Punta Cana Dominican Republic 2. Montego Bay Jamaica and 3. The Maya Riveria Mexico). In comparison, this Hawaiian trip was ~$7,000 (all-in). In my opinion, I simply don’t know if the incremental $4000 has me incented to return.

If you have and questions, or are looking for further guidance, feel free to send me a private note. Thanks in advance.

Room Tip: I would suggest recommending a room on the 5th floor or higher. While we stayed on a deluxe ocean v...

Mahalo for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. While many activities including cultural experiences and daily shuttle services to Lahaina are free for guests’ enjoyment, others such as spa treatments are charged based upon guest’s preference. We certainly understand your concern on general pricing but the impeccable features and unique experiences offered by the Hawaiian islands are unlike any other. Maui continues to be a favorite island and Ka’anapali Beach (which fronts The Westin Maui Resort & Spa) was recently named the Top Beach amongst 25 beaches in United States under TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice 2013 for Best Beaches. We hope you will return to indulge in our extraordinary offerings. Me ke aloha pumehana (with warmest aloha).
