“Makai Suite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

My spouse and one of my closest friends stayed here back in March 2007 in the Makai Suite. What a pleasure it was !
Wai ola was located in a nice, quiet residential area and the Makai suite was located on the main floor of the property, with the swimming pool and hot tub right in front of your room, along with some lounge chairs. Some days we were the only ones using the swimming pool and hot tub and it felt like our own vacation home at times.

The Makai suite was like a 1-bedroom apartment. My spouse and I stayed in the main bedroom, and my friend stayed in the futon along living room area, where there was a lovely window a/c unit, and there was a kitchen (but no stove). The place was enormous and there was more than enough room for all 3 of us. The bed was comfortable and we slept comfortable underneath the ceiling fan.

Kim welcomed us with a pineapple which kept an eye on for us, and on the 2nd day there she spiral cut the pineapple and left it in the refrigerator for us. How sweet !!! Every few days Kim would bake and the first day we have the best banana bread we have ever had, followed by chocolate chip cookies, and "oatmeal scotchies" which were like a brownie without fudge.

We had day trips to Kahului beach, Kaanapali beach, and we even drove up to the northwest to visit the olivine pools off the side of the freeway. Wai ola was the perfect location for all of our west maui adventures.

There was a Safeway and Longs Drugs down the street, and Front Street was only about 5 minutes away which was very convenient for dining and exploring in the evening, then at night we would return to wai ola to go swimming and sit in the hot tub before 9pm pool hours (at that time) were over. Wai ola was like coming home.

Vacations are about creating memories and now it is almost 6 years later and I am still having fond memories of our 2007 maui trip. We would return in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the excellent review. One thing that has changed since 2007 however, is our occupancy policy. We are adults only with a per limit occupancy of two. Occupancy of B&B units is limited to two adults by Maui County ordinance, and as we are licensed and permitted by Maui County we abide by the rules.

“Perfect Honeymoon...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

Me and my wife stayed at Wai Ola in October for 8 nights and we had the best time ever. We chose Wai Old mainly based on the hundreds of positive reviews from this site and we were not disappointed. We also picked here based on the fact that it was not a massive hotel resort and also not in the middle of the town. We wanted a bit of seclusion and peace and quiet on our honeymoon.
Jim and Kim were great hosts and made us feel instantly welcome. They knew we were on our honeymoon and when we arrived in our room there was a bottle of prosecco on ice along with a congratulations card... A very nice touch that was not expected. It tasted especially nice sat on the balcony (outside or room) watching the sun set over the ocean.
We stayed in the Kuuipo suite and had great views of the ocean while lying in bed. The room was immaculate, spacious and very nicely furnished. I especially liked the shower encased in glass blocks.
We travelled to Hawaii during the quiet time and as such (apart from 2 days) we had the whole place to ourselves... We felt like we actually had the whole place to ourselves!!
The pool was great and we would often come back from the beach early and just chill round the pool with a drink and watch the sun set. The Jacuzzi was also great and was great to use at night once the temperature had dropped (a little) and wasn’t as intense.
As many others have said there is free use of beach towels/chairs/umbrellas as well as snorkels, masks and flippers, boogie boards and cool boxes, ideal for us as we took our lunch to the beach.
I had also read many good things about Kim’s 'baked goods' and we were not disappointed. As we were the only guests there during our stay I feel we were spoilt a little. We were treated to banana bread with choc chips, spiced pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing, chocolate brownies and nut cookies...Yum!!
Lahaina town is about 1.5 miles down front street and is walk able if you have a reasonable fitness (we did it once and took about 40 minutes). There is however a bus that stops at the bottom of the road (every hour). $2/person and takes you straight into the centre of Lahaina. The last bus leaves town at 10pm though so if staying later then you will have to walk or get a cab ($10 max)
The best beaches are a bit of a drive away and not walk able, we had a car for the duration though so it was no problem for us. There are so many nice beaches on Maui you would need a car to see them all anyway.
Overall I would 100% recommend this place to anyone. We had a perfect honeymoon and we hope to return one day... If only to return the $1 that Kim lent us for the bus one day!! :-)
Once again many thanks for a memorable honeymoon.
Mahalo Jim & Kim.

“A True Vacation Paridise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

If you want a feel-good and a good-feel of Lahaina, Wai ola is a great spot.

Wai Ola offers very comfortable accomodations with excellent and flexible configuration for large groups and or small groups. We were 10 people who took over the 4 private units that gave us access to the larger central living area.

Nestled a couple blocks from the shore and a few blocks further to Old Town Lahaina, the property offered a fel for Lahaina Residential living with the privacy and secluded feeling of a large villa.

The central location made it easy to choose your beach, choose your restaurant and choose your activity (with a little help from you're very wonderful hosts at Wai Ola). And much of it was a short bike-ride away.

Sure you can have the high-end luxury of the hotel chains, but then you wont have the cozy private group experience when you want to have an in-house family and friends BBQ (also available at Wai Ola).

Needless to say, Maui itself is so much much more than it's cracked up to be.
Aloha

“Its was our last time here, we LOVE it and they are family to us.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2012

Well its the end of an era. We have stayed at Wai Ola with Kim & Jim since our honeymoon in 2008. We have returned to celebrate our anniversary every year since. The property is very quiet, and very clean. Its about a 10 minute drive from downtown Lahaina Town, or a 20 minute walk to the safeway market. My wife and I have stayed in every room there, this time around it was the Malanai Hideaway, the slanting roof was very cool, all wood covered, in general the rooms are about 5 times larger than normal hotel rooms, so there's plenty of room to spread out and nap in between day trips or beach excursions.
I always tell people to stay here for many reasons, Kim & Jim become like family to you after just one visit, they are so cool and relaxed, very welcoming. Also they give you: Wifi, beach towels, beach chairs, unbrellas, coolers, snorkel stuff, boogie boards, laundry facilities, all for FREE! Think about that the next time you check out of the big chain hotel and get sticker shocked by fees. Oh and Kim bakes goodies and leaves them in your room...ask for the Blueberry stuff its awesome!

Go local! They are located above Lahaina Town with great ocean views, a nice sized pool, 2 great large grills with burners and a hot tub. We chose this place in 2008 because of the reviews in TripAdvisor, we saved so much money. Plus Kim & Jim over the years have given us advice on Beaches, tourist spots WORTH going to, dining, shopping and sightseeing. They have become like family to us, so why is this our last year? My wife is pregnant and they are an adults only resort, which was another main reason we chose Wai Ola. However we joked that when we return, we shall camp out in the driveway in a van as to not break the rules. Our final night was a sad one, tears were shed, man hugs were given. We promised to return, even just to visit (and steal Kim's baked good of the day). This is the type of place you think doesn't exist anymore. Great customer service, clean rooms, safe area, and wonderful hosts. I suggest you stay here if you're considering a trip to Maui, go local and laugh at the people paying for resort fees just to park their rental car! Thank you TripAdvisor for bringing Kim & Jim into our live!

Rest assured we will go back and visit Kim and Jim soon.

Room Tip: Honeymoon suite is my favorite, all rooms are about 3 times as big as any hotel room Ive stayed in...

“Loved Wai Ola!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2012

We loved staying at Wai Ola. The location (just north of Lahaina in West Maui) is perfect for its proximity to restaurants and attractions, and it's a good base for exploring the rest of the island. It's in a quiet residential neighborhood. We loved waking up to the sound of birds singing, and it was nice to have a relaxing place to return to at the end of a busy day. Jim and Kim were excellent hosts. They were available if we had questions about finding a good restaurant or beach, or if we needed suggestions on what to see or do. We made good use of the beach chairs and umbrellas they have for guests to use, and we especially enjoyed Kim's home-baked goodies. Mahalo, Jim and Kim. We'll be back!

Room Tip: The Makai Suite was spacious and perfect for us, as it had no stairs. The Honeymoon Cottage was a b...
