We totally agree with all the 5 star reviews. Forget the Kaanapali high rises on a skinny stretch of congested beach. Yep, they have stunning lobbies, lots of fun shops and restaurants within walking distance, but for sheer relaxation, try Napili Kai Beach Resort.
We booked an Ocean View Studio via Expedia. We didn't expect the incredible view from room 77 in the Aloha building. My wife actually said "Did they give us the wrong room?" Wow indeed.
The grounds are impeccable, with grills and picnic tables stashed away in several areas. Small swimming pools scattered throughout the resort, a large Jacuzzi tucked in a garden area.
The low rise buildings blend into the grounds. The resort never felt crowded, and is definitely not suited for those seeking loud nightlife.
The Sea House restaurant was fantastic. Not the cheapest Maui restaurant, download their menu from napilikai.com, but a great value for creative cuisine, and it compares quite well with the nicer places on the island for imagination and quality The Whale Watchers bar at the Sea House has one of the coolest bar views ever. Don't miss enjoying a couple of breakfasts and lunches at the Sea House as well. Absolutely the best island pancakes on Maui. Don't believe the hype surrounding the place on the other end of the beach.
Napili Bay beach never has crashing waves, unless the weather is crazy. It's well protected, and great for lazy snorkeling, floating and just hanging out. Super clear water, even when it's 20 feet deep, you feel as if your feet are just skimming the bottom!
The room was perfect for two people. A galley kitchen with full sized fridge, glass cooktop, and a convection microwave. My only complaint was that the cocktail glasses were too small for making ginormous Gin and Tonics. Oh, my....such a pain to have to walk all the way from the lanai to the kitchen for a refill. Perhaps the Napili Kai deserves just a one star review for such a travesty?
Our room did not have A/C, and even if it had, we wouldn't have needed it or used it. The ceiling fan provided any additional air movement we needed when the trade winds weren't gently blowing. Closing the windows and doors would have been unthinkable. Even with the daily temps in the upper 80's, every evening was perfect for sleeping.
We are already planning to visit NKBR again...and I almost hesitated to provide a review, not wanting to share this gem.
I could ramble on forever. Drop me a line if you have any more specific questions.
