“Not great”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2008

My husband and I, and another married couple stayed at this B& B for 5 nights, we would not stay there again and I would not recommend this place to stay.

The beautiful pictures on their website do not correctly represent the current condition of their property. Apparently their lack of maintenance extends to their web site also, since it is dated 1994. There is much deferred maintenance now and the rooms do not look quite the same, nor does the property. The hot tub outside does not work and from what the owner says it will not be fixed so they can save money on their insurance premiums.

The owners also seemed pretty focused on saving money on lights and AC by asking us to turn everything off when we were not in the rooms. Personally, I would rather be comfortable in my room and not have to worry about saving money for the proprietor all the time.

We had some cockroaches in our rooms and also an occasional one at the table sharing our breakfasts. The breakfasts were okay, but after five days it seemed a little repetitive.

We didn't mind having German breakfast companions since there were enough of us to talk amongst ourselves, but I can see how being the only English speaker could be a bit isolating.

The location is in a residential neighborhood. There are no attractions within walking distance except for a park with a rocky shoreline five or six blocks down the hill so you do need a car to be able to get to any activities.

We had a lot of good moments at the B&B, we enjoyed our stay on Maui, but any one looking at staying here should know about the conditions.

“Would Not Recommend to Friends”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2008

Pros: immaculately clean and spacious rooms, friendly staff, decent breakfast, authentic Hawaiian decor, close to Lahaina and several beaches.

Cons:
1.) Tacky 80's decor that overshadows the authentic Hawaiian pieces. One room in our suite had an uncomfortable couch, 2 mirrored walls, and a coffee table. All I wanted to do was to get out of there asap. Not cozy, comfy, or romantic so I would not recommend this for honeymooners at all. Perhaps for a big family with kids, this would be fine. I would not recommend this B&B to any of my friends nor would we ever stay here again.

2.) Staff we talked to were not very knowledgeable about the area. We asked for recommendations on restaurants and were told that all were good. So we went to one in Lahaina which turned out to be pretty terrible. We stay at B&B's for the personal one-on-one experience, but this felt more like a hotel and a bit impersonal.

3.) Vibe here is of a hippy commune. Some might like this, but we weren't that into it.

4.) We had read reviews on this B&B before we booked it, and knew that lots of German tourists stayed here. We thought that it would be a great opportunity to meet some interesting people and have a fun experience. Unfortunately, our time interacting with the other guests was mostly awkward. At our first breakfast, we said good morning to our dining companions, 2 German couples, and got a mumbled good morning back from one of them, and unfriendly looks from the rest. A usually talkative person, I ate my breakfast as soon as possible while staring at the toast in the middle of the table. Either no one spoke English, or they just weren't willing to, and since we don't speak German, the resulting situation was extremely awkward. At our second breakfast, the atmosphere was a lot friendlier though everyone seemed really shy so everyone just kind of stared at their food and ate in silence. So awkward! Perhaps we were just unlucky, but thought I would share our experience nonetheless. If you are from Germany, I would guess that you will have a wonderful time as the staff is bilingual and there will be lots of other people from Germany to meet and talk to.
5.) We felt so sorry for the poor dog that is on a leash 24/7 in front of the house. I don't know if anyone walks this poor animal, but he just kind of stayed on the stairs all day/night. Hopefully, while we were out, he got to interact with someone.

Overall, this has been my least favorite B&B of all time and I would not recommend it to anyone I know. However, I realize that different people look for different things, which is why I made the list above.

“Convenient to Lahaina & Kaanapali Beaches”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2008

We stayed for 2 nights at House of Fountains in the Alii Suite in June 2008. Our room was large, had a mini fridge, huge walk-in shower. Breakfast was good, with a lot of selection.

The pool was nice, but we were told the hot tub was not working while we were there. We noticed a few things around the house that could use some attention and repair. They provide coolers and ice packs for trips to the beach, along with beach towels, umbrella and chairs; snorkel equipment if you need it.

The other 4 couples at breakfast were all from Germany. Some spoke a bit of English, and after exchanging a few pleasantries, they all reverted to German, leaving my husband and I out of the conversation. No big deal, but it did take away one of our favourite aspects of B&B stays where you get to compare experiences with fellow travelers.

One negative, the owner and at least one of the young helpers smoke. Though there is no smoking inside the house, they do smoke on the front porch so on occasion you have to pass thru their haze of smoke to enter the house.

“Highly recommend this Hawaiian B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2007

My husband and I (Americans) stayed at the House of Fountains Dec ‘07. We had a great time-there is so much to recommend here; nice friendly hosts, clean, spacious home in a residential area which is just a mile or so from the center of Lahaina. The house contains many Hawaiian and Polynesian artifacts and Don, being a native Hawaiian, was always ready to discuss them and share his knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture with us.

Breakfast is served in the great room around a very large table with a lazy susan packed with everything you could want for breakfast. The hosts often joined us all for breakfast as well and the discussions that ensued usually meant we spend an hour or more at breakfast. Now that’s enjoying your vacation!

Adjacent to the great room is a Lanai which the guest can use (and we did quite often) and on the lower floor is a great pool area with tables and chairs and a kitchen area that is specifically for guest use. This is a great place where we and the other guests gathered in the early evening after a long day or later in the evening as well.

As some of have said, there are probably a higher percentage of german speaking guests staying here, but don’t let that stop you. English is spoken by all of the staff, and the international array of guests while we were there had no problem talking with one another. We also did not find the children noisy nor is the home cluttered.

The House of Fountains is truly homey and comfy. If you’re looking for a B&B in Maui on the west coast I would highly recommend this Hawaiian B&B.

“Can't recommend it enough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2007

The House of Fountains is wonderful. The rooms are immaculate and spacious. The breakfast had a wide variety of tasty things to eat all on a large round revolving top table so all the guests can sit and eat together. The atmosphere was really friendly, everyone made us feel really welcome. The extras you get here are great - like laundry is $2 per load. Theres a communal kitchen and BBQ if you don't want to go out for dinner. Don the co-owner will tell you all about Hawaiian culture and the artifacts he has on display in the house. This place is everything that a big resort isn't - i loved it.
