We booked through Outrigger, upon the reccomendation of some Tripadvisor reviewers. This was the first mistake. We had been very pleased with our booking and stay at the Outrigger Kailua-Kona on the Big Island the week before. The opposite is true for this property. We had to book two separate units, since they were unable to give us a 2 bedroom unit, or give us any unit with several separate beds. We had to reserve two studios, at an exhorbatant rate. We were finally told what untis wer were assigned, the night before our arrival. Upon arriving, We were given keys to some different units. the assigned accomdations caused people to sleep on sofa beds that were unacceptable to sleep on. They ended up sleeping on the sofa, without opening it. Narrow and lumpy that may be, with separations between cushions, It had more support that way than sleeping on it open as a bed.
This location consists of a few two story buildings, around the edge of a golf course, not too far from the ocean and a very nice beach. The condos are nice inside, but the entrances and outdoor hallways leave much to be desired. We paid an extremely high nightly rate to have to look at garbage dumpsters each time we went in and out of our condo. One of our condos, a spacious studio with ample kitchen and good bathroom layout (except that you could not close the door if you sat on the toilet), was on the very lowest level of A buildiing. This allowed us nice views from the ground level patio, of the golf course and the ocean in the distance and outline of Lanai island, when there were no clouds; but the entry was two or three staircases down from t he parking lot (which had no spaces for our car 95% of the time, so we had to park in the distant parking garage, a very long walk away). Dragging our bags there and then back to the car on checkout, was awful. Same for bringing in groceries. We were not in t he same building as the rest of our family, and not even close. And the second condo was in a dark hole in G building, with no light, a patio view of the wall and a couple of bushes; this entrance was so far into a dark tunnel like maze of hallways, it was like being in an old tenement building in a rundown section of a big city. The condo itself, inside was very spacious and nicely appointed, except, of course, that the sofabed was no good to sleep on. Couch sleeping there too-for hundreds of dollars a night. This was not at all what we expected after reading Tripadvisor reviews. We are most disappointed with the info from our fellow travelers on this one. BTW, there is no longer any housekeeping service during a guests stay.. Whatever you have in the place when you arrive is what you have for your entire stay, no matter how long you stay. They managed to put a note in the condo about that-nothing about the facilities was there, but this was made clear. We were only there 3 nights, so it was okay, but if we were there a week, I would have wanted someone to vacuum a bit and bring some more soaps and the like, even if I had to wash my own towels.
Yes, the beach is very nice; the little golf cart shuttle back and forth is good too, if you call for it and want to wait; otherwise, walking will have to do. Tough time getting a lounge chair most of the time. People don't give them up easily. Had no towels there either the first day we were there. We had to wait several hours for two towels. We had received no information about how the fridge etc. works at the beach cabana. Our check in told us nothing about anything. No one told us about the shuttle that runs to the close by hotels either. We saw it near the end of our visit, and found out is was free service we could have used. I discovered the little sundry shop off the lobby at the end of our visit as well. It was closed and dark when we arrived, so who knew what it was. Would have been nice to know there was a place to get snacks close by, rather than having to drive to town to find something. Never got info about the pools-their and hours-just a pretty lax staff for us all around. The front desk staff was nice and wanted to please when contacted about particular problems, but nothing was ever forthcoming from them to introduce us to the complex and let us know how everything works and where things are. Completely left to flounder around and find things on premises and off on our own. This was quite surprising. We were there during the New Year's holiday, one of the busiest tourist times; it is when other places have full staff and service, knowing they will be busy.
We enjoyed eating in the town of Lahaina, and going out on the water by boat with Captain Woody, spending time at the beach, snorkeling at the beach next door at the Sheraton, which was calmer than the snorkeling at the El Dorado beach. The men enjoyed golfing at Kaanapali Kai. Although the interior of the condos at El Dorado were lovely, and we liked the pleasant location off the highway, slightly up on a hill, the inability of the staff to get the reservation as it was to be, plus having to look at dumpsters constantly, along with the unpleasant configuration of the condo entries, and the diffculties lugging our stuff long distances to and from the condo leaves us unable to give this location a top recommendation. I think too many different organizations are managing/renting the properties here causing much of the problem. Perhaps if you book through owners directly, or through some other management agency, youwill have better luck. Use Outrigger for the Big Island, but not for this location. Not yet anyway, until they improve.
