We stayed at this property the first week of March. Nice location, surrounded by the Kanapali golf course and beach. Check in was expedited, which when busy can be a bit crazy. They did have all stations open checking people in and out which was good. This is an open aire style hotel resort, which is nice during good weather. Unfortunately, it rained several of the days we were there, and the common areas toward the middle are wet as it is open, but they did their best to contain the water build up. We didn't spend a lot of time at the resort, so I will rate the room and the restaurant we ate in. First the room. All the comments about construction are accurate. There is a new time share part of the the Hyatt being built on the one side. We asked for an upgrade to a suite which was not available. We had paid for an ocean view room and specifically asked when booking to be away from construction and the luau area due to late noise. We were given a room with a nice view, but in the building next to the construction. We were not on the facing construction side but the way the building is faced it was still in view from the deck. The noise from the construction is loud, but not unbearable. I figured since two of the days were Saturday and Sunday that they would not be working on the building but they were, even on the weekend. It was not as loud, but you could still see and hear the workers on the construction. The room and hallways need a face lift, especially the rooms. The hallways have an odd smell, which was evident all week. The rooms are small with a bed on one wall, and a fold out couch. There are two small refrigerators in the room, basically just for water and soda. They do make noise as they are cheap college dorm type fridges. The main issue I had with the room are the little bugs. They are around the sink and on one of the night tables next to the bed, there were tons of them which gave me the creeps. They don't bite but it is unsettling. I wiped down all the surfaces with an antiseptic which seemed to do the trick by the bed, but by the sink they remained. The walls and carpet in the room need to be painted and replaced as well as an upgrade to the bathroom, all old fixtures. The bed is a mattress on a frame with no box spring and sits low to the floor. I expected better for the price we paid for the room. There are a few stores in the hotel and a nice sundries store with food, drinks and snacks. The professionalism of the staff was very good and the hotel is well staffed. There is a main pool which we did not use. We booked a dinner at the high end restaurant on the premises called Son Z. It was raining like crazy so we didn't leave the hotel which is why we ate there. There are 2 other places to eat at the hotel, but we chose this as it was supposed to be the best. We came down about 6 pm and the restaurant was not busy. We were seated next the the glass next to the pond where the doors are normally open but due to the weather were closed. The swans did swim by a few times and looked like they didn't mind the rain at all. As far as the service it was average. There was a table that was sat next to us where I noticed it took the waiter at least 5 minutes to bring them menus. They looked irritated and got up and left. We ordered the spaghetti with filet mignon meatballs and a steak diane offering. The food was average, not of the quality I would have expected with the prices. Bland tasting meatballs and the steak had a layered potato strata, which the potatoes still had the skin on which is not the way that is supposed to be made. They also poured the gravy all over everything on the plate, not just the steak as is standard with steak diane. Steak was just average, potatoes were tasteless, but the asparagus was good at least. The pork spring rolls appetizer was very good.
All in all, if we were to book again, I would book at the marriott or Westin which are in the same price range and are right next door. No construction there and the hotel is newer and I would bet the rooms are much nicer. Oh, and the parking situation. We had a rental jeep and I had read not to use the valet as it takes forever to get your car. I parked it myself each day and the stalls are very close together so be aware. It is only a short walk to the lot, but it does cost 25 dollars a day to park. You use your room key to park and exit and they bill the per day parking to your room bill.
