“Extremely Satisfied with Property and Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

Our stay at the Hyatt Maui was wonderful. The property is stunning, location is central to the Old Lahaina area south, and the upscale shopping north. Staff was great, especially in the breakfast area. Room amenities were typical. While others have commented about the shabbiness, I found the linens quite nice and always clean. Breakfast buffet was fabulous; price was included in our packaged deal and well worth it. We observed families, couples, young people, old people, singles, and all were having a great time. I think the key to getting the most from your stay at the Hyatt is getting a room location that works for you. Construction is going on towards the street side, and I would stay away from being placed in one of these room. Get an ocean view room and you'll have a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Room with oceanview, over the childrens' pool area have great views and are quiet.

This was our second stay this year at the Hyatt Maui. First was our choice as we're Hyatt Platinum Passport members, and this time due to a business/friends trip. We would NOT have returned to this hotel after our first visit if it had not been for the business element of our trip. Unfortunately, this hotel is not up to Hyatt standards. It is not clean, does not provide enough facilities for its guests and is overpriced. If you like to use the pool, plan to be sitting ON TOP OFF your neighbors. There are not enough lawn chairs for all of the guests, so they fill up fast in the morning. Then, if you "reserve" a chair and leave your items (towels, books, sunglasses, etc.) for more than an hour, the pool staff removes them.

Restaurant food is okay - breakfast buffet is nice, but overpriced if you just want fruit and yogurt ($30 per person).

We've stayed at the Westin Ka'anapali and think that overall it's a nicer hotel and less expensive.

Room Tip: We chose to upgrade to the Regency Club level so that we could enjoy breakfast every morning (great...

Start with the good All of the staff are very friendly. Then it goes downhill. The place shows it's age and the room is small. They brag about 2 refrigerators, but there is no microwave, go figure.
Toilet needs repaired and the counter tops in the bathroom need a better cleaning.
Also a wet spot in the middle of the room, not sure where this could come from.
Very little drawer space.
Also, the bed must be 20 years old
Plan on paying for parking
So far, I would say we will not return to this hotel.

I'll start with the positives and there are many. The staff were wonderful - warm and welcoming. The grounds are immaculate and as far as I'm concerned, the Hyatt has probably the nicest pool along the Kaanapali beach (Sheraton may be a close competitor). The food at the resort restaurants was good. In particular, Japengo is great if you are looking for sushi. The decor in our room was fairly modern and the bathroom was very nice. Our main issue with our stay was based on our particular room. People staying in other rooms or areas of the resort might not have had these issues, so your mileage may vary. Nevertheless, when you pay that kind of money for a top end resort, you don't want to show up crossing your fingers that you get a good room.

When we arrived, the reception desk advised that they were out of the rooms we booked (ocean front). That was the bad news, but they quickly followed with the "good" news which was that they upgraded us to an ocean front suite. Although we thought this was good news, it wasn't. The suite didn't offer that much more room, and there were certainly drawbacks with the room they gave us. Our room was at the very far end of the hotel and was undergoing construction outside. That meant our view of the ocean included scaffolding ropes, and during the day, workers outside our window. Also, although the suite had two lanais, the one facing the ocean was too small to do anything but stand. The one facing away from the ocean was the one with the seating and not the view we expected to have with our morning coffee each day. Directly below us was the venue where the "Drums of the Pacific" Luau was performed nearly every night. Although we weren't always in the room, we were trying to watch a movie one night and had a difficult time hearing because of the noise. Finally, and this is not trivial, there was a problem with the hot water. After our second call about it (first night and then next day), an engineer came by and showed us that we needed to run the bathtub hot water and full strength (massive amounts of water), the sink at full strength, and of course the shower a full strength for a few minutes. Only by doing this would the piping draw enough hot water to our room to have a hot shower! This is not appropriate for a property of this quality and price point. We were given the option to move and downgrade, and if it weren't for the fact that we had a lot of stuff and were fully moved in, we would have. Overall, we weren't happy with the particular room we were "upgraded" to.

So for travelers considering this resort, I'd recommend it, but only if there is some way to assure you are not near the far ends of the resort. We've stayed at the Sheraton before and it is worth a look too. The Hyatt is a mile away from the good snorkeling location (Black Rock) whereas the Sheraton is right there. Based on visiting the Hyatt twice and the Sheraton once in the past, I'd opt for the Sheraton next time.

Room Tip: Avoid corner suites on the South end wng of the resort (near the luau). Probably the same for the N...

Staying at this Hyatt is special because not only is it a beautiful hotel with outstanding grounds and location- it has a group of employees- the Regency Club staff, who will become your second family during your stay. In fact, most of the employees at this Hyatt have been here for YEARS and there isn't a lot of turnover, which tells you something right away! You will pay more to stay on the Club Floor- but the experience you have in return is priceless. "Life is better here" was my husband's observation having stayed in various hotels and then coming back to the Hyatt - on the 22nd floor. You can have a nice vacation anywhere on Maui- but you will learn about the Aloha spirit at this hotel. I will agree that the Maui Jim sunglass salesmen at the pool are an unwelcome addition to the property.

Room Tip: book on the 21st or 22nd floor! otherwise, try to be in the atrium if at all possible!

We stayed for 8 nights at the Hyatt Maui in February 2013 and have mixed feelings about my experience. Some parts were great, but there were a couple inexcusable things.

- 1 star: the beds are terrible. my husband had back problems all week cause of them and i barely slept. they are insanely hard - hard as rocks. it was miserable.
- 1 star: the hot tub was out of commission. one of our favorite things to do on vacation is hot tub. we love it! they're fun, relaxing. unfortunately while we were there the hot tub was broken or something and was blocked off. they should have come up with some sort of back up plan for this - like opening up the spa hot tubs at night or some kind of spa share deal with the marriott next door. i needed the hot tub!

There were some great things about the hotel though! They just, in my mind, weren't great enough to make up for those 2 things above.

Hotel grounds: Very nice. Very lush, lots of greenery. Loved the penguins. I loved the pool and didn't experience difficulty finding a chair at any point during the day. It was busy but was always fine. I wish they warmed the pool though - it was too cold to swim for long.

Restaurants: Breakfast was miserable, see my review on Sonz for more details there. Dinner at Sonz was very nice though. I also enjoyed Umalu, although I wish they provided a few more lunch options because by the end of the trip I was ready to not eat Umalu for lunch every day when I was laying out by the pool!

Rooms: Super boring. If you care about having a room that looks exciting, this is not a place for you. But honestly, I couldn't care less. The rooms were clean and looked nice. The beds were so insanely uncomfortable though it was miserable but from the outside looking in they were nice. I was annoyed though that we asked for a king bed, showed up and they only had double bed rooms, so we asked to be moved to a king bed room when it became available (after 3 nights), but they clearly moved us from an ocean view room to a partial ocean view room. at least by their definition. i didn't make a fuss about it, but it bothered me.

Star gazing: LOVED! They actually do star gazing tours at night where they take you to the top of the hotel and have these telescopes. It was awesome. Seriously awesome. Highly recommend.

Location: It's at the very end of Ka'anapali Beach. Nice location, but not perfect. It's a 15 minute walk to Whalers Village - they lie and tell you 10, but we are fast walkers and it took us a full 15 minutes. Beach area is better at every other hotel, so walk somewhere else if you plan to use the beach.

So, overall, it's not that it was terrible, but they've got room for improvement. I really did enjoy my stay there overall but was annoyed enough to not think they deserve over 3 stars.

We just stayed at the Hyatt Regency for our Honeymoon and the staff all made us feel very welcome and went out of their way to accommodate us. I must point out though, the Hyatt has these very deceiving sales staff strategically placed around the hotel. They will approach you with the offer of a free beach bag, once you accept they go in for the kill and bombard you with this sales pitch for their time share properties. It is very off putting and they intimidate you into booking an appointment. I personally think they should rid the hotel of these people with their sleazy sales tactics and let everyone enjoy their holiday. Overallit is a nice place but time share staff must be kicked out.

Room Tip: You must see the room location first as you may end up with a bug tree in front of your window and c...
