“Very nice resort, pools are amazing, Staff really cares”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

Stayed her for a week in january. We have been here before. Price is a bit expensive but your litteraly on the beach in beautifull Maui. We kept our balcony door open and could hear the waves of the ocean at night. The rooms are clean but the room decor is ugly and old fashoined (not antique, just ugly). We had a few Minor issues with our room in the begining of our stay but Michael the front dest mannager definitely went out of his way to fix the problems to make us happy, he succeeded. THE POOLS and water slides are really nice, clean and fun. Plenty of room eventhough the hotel was full. Stay here, and your in paradise.

Room Tip: Ocean view is a must, its worth the extra $$

We have stayed at this resort 3 times now, the last time was last May and the pool was FREEZING. So cold that we hardly even went in it. The kids didn't even want to go in, it was that cold. Really hoping they heat it up in the future...we have been there before and never noticed this. Anyone else find this?

We stayed for 3 days. The location is beautiful - right on the beach, the water is really warm, although the sand is not that great. The pool is very beautiful and there was plenty of space, we never had to wait for lounges by the pool. Staff were really helpful no matter what we asked for. We had a ground floor room but still managed to have an ocean view (even though we didn't pay for this or request it!) Our room was spacious, we had 3 separate beds in it with room to spare. Definitely worth the experience!

I was torn between 3 dots and 4, but decided on 3...... and here is why:

We stayed here for a week with young family, paying in excess of $400 per night. At arrival our room smelled a bit dusty (you know that smell ?), and I could see dust trails and uncleaned surfaces and after a hand swipe or two here and there, well, it was confirmed. Our fridge was also not switched on (thus not cool) at arrival, a real basic I think. After the first clean, I must say however, the room remained clean. Also, our safe in the room was really a bit 'loose' from the base..... one could shift it some.... strange but true !

Sea view room could not be faulted, but the room interior seemed to me a bit dull to be honest...... not colourful enough...... not cheerful Hawaiian enough. It will be argued that it is old Hawaiian tradition, but really then, people staying in 4* and 5* resorts want that extra "Hawaiian feeling" factor hey ? We stayed in a 3* star resort previously in Maui, and the rooms felt more cheerful to be honest.... captured that Hawaiian feeling, though also very traditional. Room size in the Hyatt was adequate, but the bathroom seemed a bit small (even though it has a small walk in closet and separate basin oustide the bathroom, with a coffee/fridge area too).

The large grounds, lobby and gardens are tropical and beautiful and we and our children enjoyed same. An ABC store and in house laundry nice additions too. We had no problem with self parking, I think you pay like$14.50 a day for that now. Live penguins, flamingos, koi, lizards, swans, cranes in various water features.....and parrots in the lobby beautiful and nice for children to visit. A Camp Hyatt for 5 to 12 yr olds, children's programmes, available at $ too (we didn't use it ).

Friendly and helpful staff everywhere, our compliments in that regard......

In room dining, in our opinion, didn't offer enough choices and the food was merely so-so (I even got some partially burnt food one eve). We also dined at two of the in house restaurants, and again, we expected more from this type of establishment. Here is room for improvement. The little coffee shop at the lobby (with early morning coffee; yoghurt, muffins etc) was good though !

Swimming pool and kids swimming play park very nice, no complaints. Just a remark: I think guests who leave their cocktail cups lying around near or at the pool are themselves the culprits... clean after yourself you buggers ! :) If the staff could do some more rounds to clean up after the lazy blokes, it would be appreciated (I assisted them one early eve after a swim :)

Note: the sea is a bit rough to swim in right in front of the hotel, actually there are red flags posted in front of many of the resorts next to it. I saw snorkelers, but didn't do it myself..... one staff member said it is not advised (thanks for the honesty). Tanning is OK though !! Note also: you will pay a rental fee for an umbrella spot or little seafront chair-umbrella-combo...... I think like at many resorts. I personally do not like this custom.

Go golfing close by ! Nice, you can walk there......

I should also mention that there were water main ruptures at the resort on two days during our stay for quite some hours...... not nice. I don't know if it is the hotel's own reno's or general road construction, but it happened close to the hotel grounds at the same spot twice we were told. Not nice !

So, all that said, will we return to this hotel ? I don't know to be honest: partially I think because we'd like to explore something new and partially because we were not overly WOWed, considering the $$$ paid. Time will learn....

The Hyatt has lots of good things going for it: great location with easy walking to other resorts, restaurants and beaches, lush gardens, friendly staff, many on-site shops and services and a relaxed atmosphere. The rooms are spacious, although the balconies are small. The hotel was appears to have been built in the early 1970s based on the architecture and decor. It has an overall retro Hawaii feel in it's design -- dark furnishings, lots of plants and flowers, dark wallpaper and carpet, etc. It is not a sleek, modern, cosmopolitan property. It's nice, but it is not luxurious.

We stayed in room in the Napili Tower. The bedroom area appeared to be recently recarpted and painted with newer furnishings. It was spacious and pleasant. The bathroom however is in desparate need of being gutted and totally redone. The marble sink had three large cracks, the marble floors were cracked and poorly patched, the grout in the bathtub was about four layers thick and cracking and missing and on the dirty side. Housekeeping in the bathroom areas is quite lax. The room had a nice large walk in closet with a safe.

The carpeting in the main restaurant where the buffet breakfast is offered is threadbare and in complete need of being replaced, Carpet in the lobby and in the elevators is stained and needs to be replaced.

Parking spaces are terribly small - best suited for a Honda Fit or SmartCar. Many times people took two spots for larger cars because they had no other choice -- leaving even fewer available spaces.

The pool area is pretty, but always packed. Staff tries to do a nice job of preventing "chair saving" but there are plenty of rude guests who still try to save chairs that you never ever see anyone sitting in.

Restaurants seem to operate on an unknown schedule. Sometimes open, sometimes not, regardless of what the signs say. Staff at the pool bar were unfriendly and appeared to only want to serve the younger drinkers. The bar staff at Japenga could be rather rude too - they love to chat among themselves and ignore customers.

Overall it is an okay place to stay on Kaanapali, but it is not a luxury hotel in it's current state. It needs some major updates and rennovations. If you are looking for luxury, try the Wailea area -- it will be more expensive though.

I am currently staying at the hyatt and my first impression was wow I was blown away wveryone said that hawaii was a bit aged and dated and yes it is a bit but regardless it is a beautiful place to stay. The hyatt honestly has it all from breaksfast overlooking the swan court and the ocean to poolsbeach front and more it is just a breathtaking place to stay. My only thing I can say that is constructive is that with all the places to eat they really need atleast one place that is cheap. They are all very expensive and if you are coming with a family will end up costing you alot however you just need to walk along the beachwalk to find a good cheap place to eat. Will come back here again.

We will not be staying at the Hyatt in Maui again. I was disappointed with several things. Upon arrival, we were booked in a room with one king bed and a sofa pull out, which was to accommodate our family of five. We had booked over four months previous, and were not impressed to find this out upon our arrival. I slept maybe three hours the first night as our room was located directly beside the road with a metal grate that clanked every time a vehicle drove over it. We were moved into an appropriate room the next day. A few days into our trip, the entire hotel was without water from mid morning until late afternoon. We understood, as they said that a water main was broken which supplied several of the hotels in the area. Now, two days later, we are in exactly the same situation! No water! I'm not sure how I am to clean up my sandy children to take them to dinner and ready for bed - perhaps I am to bathe them in the pool? We will not be returning to this hotel again, and I would not recommend it to any of my friends or family. It is over priced for the rooms and service we have received.
