“Great natural reserve with a volcano”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

I highly recommend every Maui visitor to see the top of the island - Mt. Haleakala. The volcano is over 3000 meters high and the view is beautiful. It feels like visiting an alien planet.

“Looks like another world in the crater”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

Went up on a perfectly clear day. The views were spectacular. We could see Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa from the summit. The different colors inside the crater are so beautiful.

“Beautiful Park !!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013 via mobile

This is an amazing national park on my opinion. It's super pretty if it's a clear day. I recommend bringing a jacket because it gets awfully cold.

“Very cool! (literally, if seeing the sunrise)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

Went for sunrise and toured some of the park. Worth doing both. Does take awhile to get to the summit - when judging the time needed to be there in time for sunrise, be sure you are calculating all the way to the summit as that is approximately 30 minutes (I think) beyond the Visitor center. If you want to see the sunrise from the summit, you'll have to get there early as the parking spaces fill up. In June there was parking lot work which limited the spaces further. We had windbreakers for sunrise at summit and were still cold - other handy sources of warmth could include borrowed blankets, beach towels from your hotel. Don't be ashamed to layer up!

PLEASE don't walk off the paths. The signs clearly say not to do this, explaining why (kill the roots of the fragile plants and endanger tiny creatures), but many people arrived in the dark (cause it's before the sunrise, of course), and let's assume they didn't see the signs, but they walked all over places they shouldn't have.
When the sun comes up so you can see, do admire the views in all directions and also at the crater - very cool. It was awesome to watch the weather created before our eyes as the clouds were formed (read more about it on the posted placards). Check out the Silversword plants - we had the pleasure of seeing one blooming - also very cool.

A Hawaii Park Pass also includes admission to parks on the Big Island - may be a good value rather than single admissions depending on your travel plans.

“The view...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

The view are incredible! You can see 5 Hawaiian islands from the top. If it's sunny, it will be the warmest (72 degrees) 10,000 foot elevation you will ever be on!
