5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

I have stayed at Maui Sunseeker 3 times now and its never a disappointment. The staff is great, the resort is great, and falling asleep to the sound of the Pacific ocean is just the best. The new location of the hot tub is great, plenty of grills to save on food, and the new sundeck is just beautiful. Love to look to the right and see the windmills on the West Maui mountains. Just doing my part for the environment by looking at them I think! LOL

I recently visited Maui for the first time. I was traveling alone and decided to stay at the Maui Sunseeker because it is a gay resort. I didn’t know what to expect from a clothing optional LGBT hotel, but what I ended up with were some great friendships. The rooms were spacious, clean, and homey, but the star of the resort were its guests. The first night of my stay I met one of the guests out by the pool. The next day I saw him at Little Beach, where he introduced me to another guest from the hotel. For the remainder of my one week stay I met up with other hotel guests at the beach and out by the pool area in the evenings. The new arrivals who dared say hello were quickly welcomed into the mix. I traveled solo but never went a day without having conversations with great new friends from the hotel. It had a gay summer camp vibe.

Pros:
* A welcoming gay vibe where hotel guests can meet each other
* Helpful and friendly hotel staff
* Great location. Kihei is a laid back town that doesn’t have the tourist feel of Lahaina. It’s an easy drive to Little Beach and shopping in Wailea.
* Large, clean, comfortable rooms

Cons:
* Parking is difficult and you do need a car. There are a few easy spots beside one building, but the parking behind building 300 is tough. To park you have to drive up on the sidewalk and squeeze beside other parked cars. To get out you may need to do the squeeze in reverse. Request to hotel management: as you continue to build out the resort make parking easier.
* There are no breakfast/coffee shops in walking distance from the resort. In the morning I like to grab coffee before I jump in the car. The good news is that it sounds like the hotel plans to install a coffee shop in the new building that is under construction.
* Room rates are higher than at other hotels in the area. You do pay a premium to be at the gay resort. To me it was worth it for the social aspect.

Aloha Chris C
A BIG Mahalo Nui Loa for the rave review. We are so appreciative of your high marks and wonderful review, but even more grateful that you took time out of your day to write the review.
Love the pros and cons........thanks for those very helpful suggestions. Of course the cons are the ones that my eyes flash to and I would love to respond on those.
As you correctly heard, we are building a café in the new building that is under construction. We hope to have that building open by mid November. We then are allowed to go after the café permit, which we hope to have by Spring 2014. I promise the best coffee in Kihei when it opens!
On the parking behind the 300 building, we admittedly have a 'conundrum'. When I bought the business/buildings, there were just enough parking spots for the number of guest rooms. If we try to reconstruct them, we have to do it per new county code as we lose the 'grandfathering'. With the new code we would lose many spots and hence not qualify for enough spaces/guestroom and would have to either tear down/reconstruct an entire building or convert the '300' garden and gazebo into parking as well.
I know, I know, more than you wanted to hear but its a quirk in the codes here on Maui. So bottom line we cannot change the parking unless we bulldoze that entire building and reconstruct it or take away the gardens.
The good news is that, as you also accurately pointed out, there is easier parking available in the other lots. Even better news is that we are putting in a whole new parking lot between the 400 and the 600 building that will have easy parking as well, so lots of 'easy' parking spots will be available, I promise.
As for our pricing of our rooms, I think we are very well placed. Even in our calculations including the penthouse, our average daily rate is $169/night. The new resort opening in Wailea later this year is charging $509/night for a standard room and its not even ocean view. There are condos in the area that are less expensive than us but they don't provide daily housekeeping and they charge for things like access to wifi, etc. Also a tip for the other readers, if you make a reservation at another hotel/condo, always ask if there is a 'resort fee' before you make the reservation.
Its the latest gimmick to extract more money after the fact. So while the hotel down the street may be a few dollars less per night, they will shock you when you register or check out with a daily resort fee of $20-75 for things like parking and wifi. We are so adamantly against that practice and promise no hidden fees other than incidentals like buying activities or merchandise, etc.
Chris C we love your response and I hope you found this response to be informative and helpful. We really look forward to you coming back and staying with us again!

I absolutely loved staying at Maui Sunseeker! The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, welcoming, and very attentive. The location is perfect, a very short walk to a beautiful beach. Also, the staff keep items left by previous visitors for new tenants to use, including snorkel gear, umbrellas, travel chairs, hats, boogie boards, and sunscreen/lotion/aloe. I highly recommend staying at the Sunseeker!

You can relax at the Sunseeker. Perfect setting, nicely upgraded, and excellent value. The cleaning staff go above and beyond to ensure cleanliness and a welcoming environment! All the staff are committed to seeing the guests have the best stay possible at the Sunseeker! After 11 years (sometimes 2-3 times a year) of staying there, its truly our Ohana and LBGT family in Maui. Its terrific! Best bang for your buck in Kihei, and perhaps on Maui.

We just want to thank everyone at the Maui Sunseeker for making our dream vacation even better! The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and felt like family by the time we left. The hotel was filly equipped and very nicely maintained. We felt completely at home throughout our entire stay! We wouldn't stay anywhere else!

This was my first time on Maui and I won't go anywhere else. This resort is as good as it gets, especially for the LGBT traveler. It's in Kihei (South Maui) which felt less touristy than Kaanapali or Wailea, and certainly not over-priced like many of the large resorts. It's very quiet, and definitely the place to relaxxxx (and why else would you come to Maui?) Even though our room was in front facing the main road, I didn't hear any traffic with the door closed. It's great for couples here on a romantic getaway, and it also works as a launching point to partake in the many activities Maui has to offer. The friendly and helpful staff can provide suggestions on the activities you're looking for and can book them for you. The resort's pool and rooftop deck are clothing optional, yet it does not feel seedy or cruisy like some other gay destinations. The pool and hot tub area is a good place to meet other couples at night and discuss plans for the next day, share sightseeing tips, etc. The place can seem a little dead during the day. Maui is full of activities and sightseeing but it requires many to be gone for much of the day, so you won't find too many people lingering around during the day. But then again, you'll have the whole place to yourself to sit by the pool and work on your tan :-)

And a big mahalo for the rave review.
We are so appreciative of the comment about finding the common areas to be comfortable. We really strive to find a balance for all of our guests. As you can imagine, getting that to work with gay men, lesbian women, bi/trans and heterosexual couples is not easy, but somehow the culture and atmosphere we try to set creates an environment everyone can enjoy.
We look forward to your return to us and appreciate the time you took to write the review.

Ray and I decided to celebrate our 12th Anniversary here as we had done the past 2 years and we were so glad that we did......Located in Kihei the Maui Sunseeker is in the perfect location on the island for all of its abundant scenic opportunities......From the rootop of the office, you can see the islands giant windmills nestled on top of the mountain on the other side of the bay or view tens of professional wind surfers while walking down the sand beach on the other side of the road...
We were fortunate enough to meet several other professional couples while relaxing by the pool and plan on keeping in touch on Facebook.....
While conversing at our neighbors table next to their sliding glass doors, the sliding glass door locked accidentally itself....I had the Maui Sunseeker's number on my cellphone so I called it and got ahold of Bob and within seconds, he was coming around the corner to aid our new friends into unlocking their patio door....
Our entire stay was filled with Great Service from Chuck, Michael, Joe, Bob, Valerie and the incredible housekeeping staff who everday put away my freshly dried dishes....
Our next Anniversay was booked on the day of our departure and Both Ray and I can not wait to return to the Sunseeker....

Room Tip: Suite by the pool adds to the charm of the property
