Not sure what restaurant a previous reviewer ate at but this was far and away the best breakfast we had while on this most recent 8 day trip to Maui. I am a very well-travelled and (dare I say it) relatively refined connoisseur of fine dining and the Five Palms was first class from start to finish. The view from their dining room is breathtaking... A perfect crescent shaped and palm-tree-studded beach was but a few yards away from our window seat. The service was friendly, proficient and professional. I had the hawaiian sweet-bread french toast and it was the honest to god the best I've ever had. My girlfriend had the eggs benedict which featured the lightest, fluffiest, freshest eggs I've ever tasted. The Canadian bacon, english muffin and hollandaise sauce were likewise perfect. We also ordered their baked banana pancake which arrived looking more like a gorgeous, golden brown banana "cake" than anything else. It was dense, lightly sweet and delectable. It was so filling that we were only able to enjoy a narrow slice each before packing the rest of the cake for our afternoon drive to Hana picnic provisions. Do yourself a favor and make sure you make it in here at least once for breakfast or lunch.

Valentines Day dinner

My husband and I ate there on Valentines Day after not being able to get in at SeaWatch (at Wailea Golf Club). We didn't make reservations until Monday for a Tuesday holiday dinner but were able to get an 8:30 seating. It must have been sheer luck, but we got one of the best seats in the house (small table in the corner of the open window, on the ocean end).

We were pretty pleased...until we opened the menu and saw the prices. Yes, Wailea prices are the highest on the island. But we stayed there 3 years ago and don't remember it being nearly this bad.

My appetizer of ahi and lobster spring rolls at $17 was delicious but disappointing. They were very small and gone in two bites. My husband's Hearts of Palm Lover's salad was also very small and contained 4 little pieces (1/2 cm-wide discs!) of HOP, leaving a "lover" unsatisfied.

I had the curried whole Opakapaka for $50 and my husband had the Opakapaka fllet for $40. He got the better deal as his fillet was as big as my whole fish, and he didn't have to fight bones the whole meal. His preparation/sauce was excellent; my curry overpowered this fish a bit. Our rice served on the same plate, was cold.

The couple that sat behind us had a bad experience with their order. The gentlemen ordered a porkchop (whatever) and wasn't told until 30 min. later that they ran out of it. He made a big deal with the server then with the mngr, and we had to hear the whole thing. Uggghh.

The tiramisu was the best deal of the night. So at least they ended with a bang.

The best meal of the trip was in Lahaina (in Whaler's Village, the place on the beach with indoor/outdoor seating and fake coi out front?! Name? Oops!) and about $15 per plate less expensive.

This restaurant has a world class location on one of the most beautiful beaches on Maui. Unfortunately, the bad food, service and outrageous prices ruin the view. As a Maui resident, I am very familiar with the best and the worst restaurants on the island. Residents will accept high prices, if the quality of food and service justifies the price. However, during our last lunch, the Five Palms offered only stale food with unimaginative preparation, extremely slow service and had just raised their prices 20% across the board. It's hard to focus on the spectacular ocean view when waiting over 40 minutes for our food and then having to choke down a stale, overpriced sandwich and $13 cobb salad with three or four dried out morsels of chicken, one slice of avocado and no bleu cheese.

If you want a good, reasonably priced lunch (with a spectacular view) try the Seawatch. For a consistently good, reasonably priced lunch, try Cafe O'Lei in Kihei.

I'm a local who eats lunch out every day in Kihei - they just raised the prices, cut the staff, and reduced the size of the lunches.

Service is very, very poor - only a few tables of unlucky tourist and it took over 20 minutes for someone to take our order, then another 25 for the order to arrive. The $12.95 Cobb salad looked like a $4.95 dinner salad when it arrived - no blue cheese, about two tablespoons of avocado, 1/4 of a chicken breast that was very tough and about a cup of lettuce.

My lunch mate got a chicken sandwich with stale bread.

No refills on water during lunch as the wait staff never came back.

Very overpriced even for Maui - a salad, chicken sandwich, two glasses of water for $29.00.

To top off everything, the property is undergoing renovation and there is very little parking.

Go to Seawatch if you want a nice lunch with a view.

My husband and I have eaten here 3 times and this time was horrible. We waited for 50 minutes to get our food while the other tables around us arrived AFTER we did and received their food sooner. Half of our order came out before the other half and the burgers were cold before the condiments arrived. The server was very short with us and we had to inquire about our food before we were told the kitchen staff forgot about our order. They offered a small discount at the end of our visit but we asked to speak to the manager and after he heard what a disaster the experience had been, he took care of the bill. This was way beyond what we were expecting from him, so we may give them another shot. The view is absolutely breathtaking and I'm sure that the manager will see that the service improves. Aloha!
