“Excellent Japanese Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

If you go, you definitely need a reservation. No reservation means no table. This is a small, intimate, local restaurant providing excellent Japanese food at reasonable non-hotel prices. If you want some flare, go somewhere else. If you want great food with locals, this is the place. The sushi is as fresh as anywhere. The miso butter fish melts in your mouth. The vegetarian set really fills you up. And if you go for either the shabu shabu or sukiyaki, you will not be disappointed at all and then you can roll out to your car. We've been here five years running when we are in Kihei.

“Yes, Maui's Most Traditional Japanese Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2014

Izakaya Matsu advertizes themselves as Maui’s most traditional Japanese restaurant and we agree. One June 13 we had dinner at Izakaya Matsu and noticed about half the customers were Japanese. One felt as if we were dining in a small restaurant in Japan.

Our recent dinner included chicken yakitori, salmon skin salad, the miso butterfish combination and tempura combination. Both combinations came with sashimi. Dessert was green tea cheesecake and green tea ice cream.

The salmon skin salad was excellent although we did find the yakitori bland. Also we would not order the green tea cheesecake again since the serving was small but would order the green tea ice cream again.

Since it was Friday evening the restaurant was full so we had to wait a while. The waitperson was very attentive and enthusiastic. She would tell us what is popular and what dishes other customers were ordering that evening.

We will be back and when we do we will order entirely a la carte and skip the combinations so we can try a wider variety of dishes.
