“Great ride”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

As the others have said, this was a great ride with only 4 riders. Beautiful scenery and good horses. A couple details; the website discussed fresh fruit and snacks at the break; there was no fruit and the snacks were granola bars, chips and crackers. The road there is a little confusing as it's not on some maps and some GPS have it wrong. The stables are near La Perousa Bay. One has to drive through a narrow road that goes through lava fields and you feel like it's the end of the road and there's virtually no cell phone coverage. Also, The nearby bay is great for snorkeling and so that's good to know for family members who are waiting for riders. There's also a nice trail along the bay. So once you drive there, considering other options.

“"Great scenic horseback ride on Maui"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

This is the 3rd stable I have ridden with on Maui and the best so far. I own 4 riding horses and am knowledgable about their care and training. Christine is a friendly, experienced horsewoman that explained how their horses were trained and paired people with horses appropriately. The horses are well cared for and suited for their jobs. It's a special private ride as the area is not open to the public. The trails go from the beach to the top of a lava vent, through historic ruins among wildlife. When riding horses on vacation, safety, horses trained for their job and a good wrangler are top on the list. Makena Stables does a great job!

“Horseback riding with a personal touch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2013

They only take out small groups so you get a personal approach. The horses are well-cared for and part of the family. The love for the horses really shows. Christine and Jordan took care of us from 8:30 to almost noon. The landscape is breathtaking and the ability to be up close and personal on a horse only makes it more so.

The stable is down a one lane road so take your time. You pass lava fields and great views of the ocean on your drive. Give yourself some time. They provide great snacks and refreshments for the ride and Christine is well versed in island culture and lore. Very informative. If you plan to go reserve early since they only take 4-6 people at a time I believe. Be personal able with the staff and they will be so with you. Go with the flow and enjoy you time with nature at it's best.

“Great views but nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

I've ridden maybe a dozen times in my life but this is the first on Maui. The ride was okay but the views were great. The terrain seemed a bit rough for the horses, lots of lava rocks to walk on. I'm not a horse expert but they didn't seem to chipper. They all just followed each other slowly, stopping randomly. I would say I'm an intermediate rider and my horse didn't respond well at all. I think they are just used to taking dozens of tourists per week on the same ride. The guide was alright but not too many interesting facts. If you really like horses then I would recommend but if your debating horseback riding or another activity then I would have chose the other.

“Nice stables and well cared for horses”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

I am writing this review with first hand experience of the stables and staff but not of the ride itself. My daughter went on the ride. She has been riding for around 25 years and is quite experienced . I thought the stables, equipment and horses were all excellent . Christine who leads the rides is a great instructor, she really cares for the horses who are in very good condition and she matches the horse to the riders experience. Safety is a major factor at these stables which was the main reason we chose them. We were going to a stables quite well recommended upcountry but were advised they did not provide riding helmets , my daughter has always worn hard helmet when riding and this should be mandatory especially for novices. At this stable you have the choice.

There are a total of six on each ride and on the day my daughter rode the others mostly had little riding experience , Christine made sure all were well instructed and prepared before they went on the ride. So far as the ride itself my daughter advised it went through quite interesting country , volcanic areas etc and the whole ride and horses were excellent. Being quite experienced she found the ride a little boring but said that for anyone with limited riding experience then this would be just right.

All in all highly recommended
