“Stinky carpet”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2004

The cottage that we stayed at stunk strongly of mildew--probably from the old carpet. The air conditioner smelled even worse than the carpets. Some of the cottages we found out later had replaced the old carpet with tiles. Therefore, if you plan to stay at these cottages ask for ones with tiles.

we had 13 people come to maui, some from england, to celebrate my wife's 50th. it was unanimous, nona lani was the perfect place to stay, great cottages and rooms, a farmers market less than 1/2 mile away (mon, wed, fri), a public beach, unobstructed, right across the street that hardly anyone uses. close to everything. the owners treat you like family. we had a fantastic time. inexpensive, close to kihei shopping, great beach,
what more could you ask for?

We discovered Nona Lani through Frommers, made our first visit in 2000 and have returned every year. I can't say enough good things about the hopitality of David, wife Nona, daughter-in-law Barbara and the rest of the family. The grounds are wonderful, well maintained and full of palm trees, several types of plumeria, bougainvillea, hibiscus and more and the beach is less than 40 steps away across the road. The 400 sq. ft.
cottages are simple and clean, comfortable, with basic but adequate furnishings. If you're looking for a major resort or well appointed condo, require a phone in the room, 50 TV channels and pay-per-view movies, a valet to park your car or an adjoining spa and golf course, Nona Lani is not for you. But if you want tremendous value for the dollar (less than $100/night) combined with wonderful ambience, can live with only 4 TV channels, try this out. And if you won't die without a phone in the room to bother you (or the short walk from the cottage to the pay phone), can handle washing your own sheets and towels, love beautiful flowers and stunning sunsets (look for the "green flash"), and want to really get away from it all and discover a more authentic simple life of the islands, this is the place. My wife and I are snorkelers and Nona Lani has been a great base camp for us.
We're booked again and looking forward to our return.

We stayed a Nona Lani Cottages last July. We rented rooms in the main house. What a tranquil spot, gorgeous air-conditioned rooms with glass block shower stalls. The gardens produce the flowers for traditional garland making, done by the owner's daughter! Beach is across the road!

Just returned from a wonderful holiday in Maui. The Nona Lani Cottages are a great deal located on the north end of Kihei road. The cottages are older but quaint. The road is pretty busy so ask for one of the back cottages. Very private with beautiful gardens. Mr Kong, the owner, is very friendly. The beach is across the street and was very quiet...never anyone else on it....the water is a bit choppy but lots of fun. I loved sitting on the deck with a cocktail in the evening smelling the plumeria trees and watching the sunset over Lahaina....would go back in a heartbeat!

We were there earlier in 2003. Some good points: The grounds are kept nice, beautiful flora all around. Very good privacy if you stay in the Cottages. Owner and family are very nice. Walk about 30 feet to get to the beach (have to cross a busy road though)Kihei is a good central location to explore the rest of the Island. Close to shopping and restaurants in downtown Kihei. Full Kitchen. The Lanai outside of the Cottage. Some not so good points:The inside decor of the cottage is quite old. We put the year at about 1977. Our particular cottage smelled a little musty, probably from the old carpet. The dust or mold present made us sneeze and have congestion most of our trip. The cottage had some significant electrical problems, lights and outlets went dead a few times -requiring me to reset the circuit breaker. Furniture and towels were also quite old and worn. Overall, Nona Loni is a good value for the price. If you are on a budget (like we were) $99 a night for this place, compared to paying twice as much anywhere else is we worth it. Just don't expect the amenities to resemble that of the Four Seasons. You get what you pay for.

In Oct. 2002 I was here on a (semi-)working vacation ... I wouldn't trade the simple, relaxed, restful, downhome experience at Nona Lani for ANY resort hotel. Why stay at a huge, "fake Hawaiian" place, when you can live in the real thing (for a whole lot less!)?! This was the closest thing to being invited into the home of actual kama'aina (natives or locals). Private cottages on two acres of lush landscaping, directly across the road from the ocean ... THIS is Maui. Mahalo nui loa to Nona Lani Cottages!
