“Pretty good deal overall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2005

We stayed for 4 days in early September as the first part of our honeymoon. We had reserved a studio room but they upgraded us to a suite which was nice. Rooms were plain & clean but there was a very slight dusty smell on the first day. Overall we were really happy with the hotel. It's in an area full of timeshares that perhaps isn't as scenic as some of the other more expensive hotel strips. We didn't spend a lot of our time in Kihei - mostly just for sleeping. Kihei was convenient for driving to the beaches and most of the Maui attractions. The hotel is very reasonably priced especially if you are a AAA or CAA member. There is a grocery store a 2min drive away - though there isn't a kitchenette in any of their rooms. Highly recommend eating at San Sei - over in the Foodland plaza. We've eaten a lot of Japanese before and the food here was amazing. We got the two person set dinner. After drinks, taxes, tip it can be a bit pricey, but it was definitely worth it. It was packed on the night we went, so probably a good idea to make reservations. The breakfast at hotel restaurant Spices was not that great. Also lunch at SeaWatch restaurant in Wailea's Golf Course was yummy with great views of the water.

This hotel is a great deal for your money. The official photos you see don't really do it justice. The rooms are really quite large, especially for the price you are paying - we had a regular room with double beds, and you could easily fit a small family in the room with no problems. They give you an EMPTY(!!!) fridge, which most hotels charge $50 for emptying, and on each floor there is a FREE washer and dryer - just bring your soap!!

The pool is great - it is not too deep with steps leading down into the water, so it is easy to get in and out off ... there is a small baby pool at one end and a hot tub at the other end. There is no pool service as such, but the bar area is at the pool area, so it is pretty convenient.

There is lots of parking, most times near your hotel room; there are large supermarkets very close by, so it is easy to shop for water, sodas etc.

Kihei is really central to everywhere; you are 15 minutes from Big Beach, and 35 minutes away from Lahaina and Kaanapali in the other direction. The beach is across the main road from the hotel, but you can walk to it, or take your car with you, and park in the parking spots across the road. Pretty easy all round.

The hotel is buzzing on a Saturday night with local musicians, singers etc ... and because it is a residential area, things have to go quiet around 10ish! The happy hour is from 4-7pm with $3 mai tais, and $2.50 beers!

Brent, the concierge, was FANTASTIC!!! He helped us arrange our whole week, and got us great seats at shows, preferential treatment etc., and his prices were better than most of the independent activity wholesalers in the area.

I would highly recommend this hotel. The staff there could not do enough to help us; there are two free internet computers in the lobby, and eveyone is respectful of the time they are on it if others are waiting; all in all a great deal for your money!!

We had a suite. It needed maintenance work but was "OK". We are not complainers so we just stayed in that room; we probably should have requested a move to a different room. But the flight is so long, and we were so glad to be there we went out to explore!
When we did sit on the lanai, there were smokers under us, and their smoke drifted up to our lanai.(this is a smoke-free hotel so smokers have to smoke outside) Our room was also near the air conditioners so the noise from them was loud.
Good things: Pleasant personnel at front desk, very helpful. Great sunset view from the front elevator!! Pool facilities good.
Restaurant: we went over one morning and although there were several empty tables, we were told (by the very bored appearing hostess) it would be a 'wait of 20-30 minutes' (we didn't bother to wait). We did eat there the last night; it was so noisy between the music and the street noises...and then my husband must have had a bout of food poisoning as he was up all night.

Stayed there for four nights and was very pleased. Got a good rate as a AAA member, but suspect better rates may have been available. Room on the first floor was good sized and comfortanble and well maintained.

Positives:
Helpful staff
Nice pool
Useful location. Not in a fancy area, but 1/2 block from a very good beach. Very convenient in the center of the island for driving to the things most want to see (Road to Hana, Haleakala park, Lahaina, Maui Oceen Center).
Found quite a few excellent restaurants within a ten minute drive.

Negatives:
Parking lot seemed to fill up early, so had to park some nights at the far end of the walk, but some extra walking is probably good for us.

Other:
Wireless internet (not sure of cost) in lobby and in some rooms, but did not reach ours. Two internet terminals with 15 minute limit that always seemed to have one or two people waiting.
Can't really walk to much of interest except for the beach nearby. Ordinary shopping (groceries, drug store) a bit too far to walk, but you are probably going to have a car when visitying Maui.

I was extremely happy with my 3-night stay at the Maui Coast Hotel. The location is perfect, especially for those who plan to drive around the island. It's in a pretty central location, so it's easier to get to places like Haleakala and Hana than if we had stayed in Lahaina or somewhere on the west side of Maui.

The rooms were very clean and comfortable, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The two free internet stations in the lobby were a nice service, and I never had to wait too long to use one of the computers. I had great help for the gentleman at the concierge desk (run by expedia.com) to book a Hana tour (which I highly recommend Ekahi Tours).

The only thing I don't recommend is the Spices, the restaurant at the front of the hotel's property. Even though it's very convenient, I didn't feel it was worth it. The food was mediocre and the service was a little on the slow side (and we were one of three parties in the restaurant at the time).

Overall, I was so happy to have chosen the Maui Coast and will definitely be staying there again when I return in December.

We stayed in the Maui Coast Hotel for three nights at the end of our tour of Hawaii. It's a nice hotel - the rooms were spacious and the extra king sized bed was so comfy! The staff were really friendly.

The pool side bar was lively and it had entertainment laid on every night.

The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle minibus to anywhere in the local vicinity, which was useful as we didn't have a car. We used it to get to the shops at Wailea and also to Mulligans on the Blue (don't forget to tip the driver).

There's also free internet access in the Reception area.

Kihei was a bit too spread out for our liking - there's no real centre to it. If we return, we'd probably stay in Wailea or north of Lahania.

Stayed just last weekend for a couple of nights on the last leg of a 2 week island hopping trip since it's only ~15-20 minutes to the airport from this hotel. I've stayed at other Coast Hotel properties on the West Coast before and the service/rooms were comparable. Got an alcove suite on the 5th floor, not much of a view anywhere since the hotel is not really close to the ocean but had no complaints, room was quiet and comfortable and price was fair.

Happy hour and Hawaiian music poolside are also a nice feature. Although I didn't use them, the 2 free computers in the lobby were a big plus for those who just can't unplug.

For those that compain that the pool was tiny, get off your duff and go to the beach. You can lounge poolside anywhere. Also, please tip well (especially the housekeeping staff who works the hardest) you'll get treated better.
