We just spent 4 nights at the Maui Coast, and i was absolutely amazed at how great it was! The hotel had everyting that I could ask for as far as services/amenities. The room was completely updated and very comfortable. I was really impressed by all the little things that they did to make our stay comfortable. The room had a very comfortable bed, a nice lanai with table and chairs, and great maid service.
The biggest draw for me was all the small details that the hotel offered: we had a really nice coffee counter w/packages of coffee, sugar, and creamer (not the plastic packages found in other resorts) and they had real coffee mugs (not the cheap cardboard ones in other resorts); there was also a refrigerator under the cabinet and a microwave (which the the high-end resorts do not offer); the bathroom was beautiful and had a lot of extras such as large dispensers with shampoo, conditioner, and bathwash mounted right in the shower (not the little bottle sitting on the countertop that the supposed "high-end" resorts offer). there was a jar with cotton balls and q-tips on the counter, and always plenty of fresh, clean towels. we also had a bed that was so comfortable that I did not want to get out of it! LOTS of pillows, and very soft, comfortable sheets.
the pool area was amazing. yes, it is a smaller pool, but that is typical of hawaiian resorts. there was a hot tub attached to the pool and another one separately in a little grotto w/tropical fauna all around. they have a pool-side bar/restaurant which served great food, and they also deliver to the pool if you don't want to leave the comfort of your pool chair. there was plenty of sun and shade, whichever you desire, and nice refreshing water to dip into when you get too hot.
The only negative of this resort is that it is not oceanfront. however, the best beach in Kihei is only one block away (Kam I). The hotel also offers free bicycles if you want to venture farther south to the other beautiful beaches of Kam II and Kam III. IMO, the beach of kam I is the best, and it is right across the street (only 1 block away), very easy to walk to. The best hawaiian convenience store (ABC Store) is right across the street from the beach, so you can easily get everything you need for your day at the beach (drinks, food, ice, etc.).
With all this being said, I definitely recommend the Maui Coast Hotel to anyone planning on staying in Kihei. btw, kihei is really fun, eclectic beach community. it is not in any way "high-end", and that is why it is so much fun to stay there. If you're looking for kiss-your-butt amenites, turn-down service, and fancy ppl, then Kihei is not for you. If you are looking for a great family-oriented, fun couples retreat, then this is the place for you.
