The first time I saw kiteboarding was actually when I landed on Maui. During the landing I saw these kites going back and forward and just before I could make sense of it all we touched down.
I got my bags, threw them into my rental car and drove to the beach right next to the airport - brilliantly called: Kite Beach
For 3 hours I was just standing there and watching like a kid being shown a new way of having fun.
There where plenty instructors on the beach, but all of them looked more like beach bums (like the early surf bums 30 years ago). And by just watching all this action, I could see plenty to understand how risky this sport is.
So I went on the web and typed in: kiteboarding lessons maui - and to no surprise there are many schools. My choice was just based on the professional presentation and language of their site.
I did choose KSM, and what a choice it was - perfect fit indeed. These guys had a store where they showed me an intro instructional video explaining the basics and showcasing the current kite equipment and evolution process that was going on, talk about customer care.
My instructor was a former pro rider who had kited all over the world and not only was it amazing to listen to his stories when we would walk up the beach, but you could just tell that he saw my mistakes and was able to adjust them with percision.
On the first day I had a hard time figuring out the kite movement and water / waves action - just to much stimulation for a land crawler like me. But on the 2nd day I got on the board and believe me - I got hooked ! I am on my 3rd week of riding on my own - and every day gets better.
KSM even gave me a discount on my gear, I got a better deal than with the other stores ( and I compared prices - you should do it too! ). Martin and his crew are the kind of Maui activities that we need more of!
