“Beautiful Condo, terrific views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013

We were in room 201 on April 3rd and it is very nice for two people, probably OK for two adults and two children. The room is very well equipped and thought out. The lanai is wonderful - the view is spectacular, the sunrise must not be missed. The kitchen is just right for light duty eating/serving. Excellent bedding and bed, very nice stay inside. Good internet. Almost $300 a night with tax, a little pricey but the location is worth it if you can afford it. The reason for the 4 rating is a few personnel issues otherwise it would be a five. The facility is beautiful, the location is outstanding.

During our stay we interfaced with several of the staff who were charming. We did, however, have more than one occasion where members of the staff were not friendly.

I communicated with the General Manager about the personnel problems we experienced and received an immediate response. I am convinced by her aggressive attitude to get the details about our negative experience and her commitment to fix it that there will be corrective action taken.

We would stay there again, confident it would be pleasant.

Room Tip: The views are amazing, all the rooms have good views.

Stayed at the Hana Kai Maui after a long and fun drive to Hana. Stayed in Unit 105, one queen size bed, looked recently enhanced and updated, very nice sea themed decorations (not the cheesy bright blues and greens either). Great bed, sheets, and pillows. New range, fridge, and convection/microwave.

Overall great stay. Staff seemed unfriendly but I was so beat I could have cared less at that point I was so exhausted.

Room Tip: 105 Has a nice view of Hana Bay and was recently renovated.

We stayed overnight at the Hana Kai so we could relax and enjoy our drive to Hana and beyond the next day! A tactic I highly recommend to anyone wanting to get the most out of this adventure.
When we arrived at the Hana Kai I was impressed with the beautiful gardens, fish pond and the warm, friendly and helpful staff. We stayed in Room 207, which is on the top floor, on the north end of the building, overlooking the beach. This was a lovely room, with a large lanai where we enjoyed a glass of wine with our dessert that evening, and sunset over breakfast in the morning. The room was clean, well equipped and comfortable. The price was a little higher than I would have liked, as they charge an extra 15% for one night stays, but, still not unreasonable for the quality of the room, location, etc. We live on the West Coast of BC and the price is comparable to what we would pay for a good quality beachfront room in Tofino, BC, and it's much easier to book and locate than some of the other accomodations (vacation rentals) in the area, and in my opinion, a much better value than the only other hotel option in Hana.

Room Tip: Room 207 is a corner unit, closest to the beach view, and was perfect for our needs!

I just wanted to make a small correction; Hana Kai charges an additional $15 (dollars) for an overnight stay (not 15%). We are happy to accept 1 night stays, but the associated cost of cleaning and laundering is substantial and this fee helps to offset these costs. This is the only additional fee we have; no parking fees, no WiFi fees, and if you stay for 2 or more nights, the fee is waived.

This is a very nice accommodation in Hana. There aren't many places to stay in Hana. This was a return visit for us. All the units are privately owned, so there is some inconsistency in the way they are decorated. None of the units are air conditioned, but have flow through windows and doors to allow the ocean breezes to cool the room at night. Very cool to sleep to the sound of the Hana Bay surf a few feet away. One word of advice, buy your food in Kahului before driving the road to Hana as the grocery options there are limited. No TV or anything, but just a wonderful place to unwind. The unit was very clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay again.

This may seem a mixed bag review, but let me say that if you want to stay a night or two in Hana, you will not be disappointed with the Hana Kai, but this is where it gets mixed and depends on what you want. If you want beach front room/location thats a bit rustic, where you hear no car traffic, no airplane traffic, peace and quiet, this is THE place to stay. If you want 5 star luxury, then this is not the place. We stayed in room 3, which I highly recommend because only room where you can walk from your patio out to beach, all other rooms you have to walk out you room door and around parking lot. Room 3 was nice, has new counter tops, kitchen items were fine to use, but being so close to water, there is rust around the place, on fridge, on window sills, the bathroom shower is like the one the had in your first apartment ;-), and the staff does a nice job of cleaning and straightening up room, my only request would be for them to mop the floors a little more often, our first five minutes there and our socks were dirty, but lets look at the big picture, and that was we were there to get away from it all and relax, and we got that in spades!!!! The locals are were friendly, the room was a perfect base for us to go explore during day ( black sand beaches, hanging out at hana bay, driving down to haleakala park) and coming back o make dinner, have a glass of wine, and listen to waves brush the shoreline....Im missing it now as I write this. At first we thought when we got there that the price was too high for the room, but after a couple of hours sitting on our patio, watching our daughter play by the koi pond, listening to the ocean, and melting into the nice patio furniture, price was not a concern, cause this is a place where you are paying for ambiance, not luxury, and its well worth it!

Just wanted to add that the bathroom is currently under renovation for this unit....so it won't look like your first apartment, after all ;) Owners are installing a glass shower with tiled floors, new vanity and recessed lighting.

We shared the two bedroom unit #5 with another adult couple. This unit will blow you away. The entrance to the unit is a huge lanai that is open on two sides. One side has sliding slat panels that can be closed for privacy and weather protection. It overlooks Hana Bay (about 75m away) as well as the koi ponds which are on property. There is a large circular table on the lanai that comfortably seats six. We did squeeze eight around it for several meals
.
Through a double sliding door is a fabulous kitchen loaded with all the cooking pots, pans, utensils and dishes that you will ever need. There's a commercial quality gas stove, double door refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster, coffee maker (with complimentary tea and coffee). The microwave is hidden behind cabinet doors above the coffee maker. The refrigerator has an icemaker that is disconnected, but there are plenty of ice cube trays that can be filled using the filter pitcher found in the cool food section.

Beyond the kitchen sink is a bar area that separates the kitchen from the living room area. There are four bar stools and an eating counter above the main kitchen counter. Wheel the barstools around and enjoy the gorgeous view out the wall of glass that overlooks Hana Bay. The huge living room has a large sofa and two comfortable side chairs as well as a desk area facing the bay. WiFi is excellent in the desk area.

The small bedroom has a queen bed, a diminutive closet, two nightstands and a chest of drawers. It is separated from the living room by a slatted door and sliding screen panels of Asian style. It is next to, but not directly connected to a very stylish bathroom with a glass wall shower and bowl style sink. The only view from this room is through the open screen panels across the living room.

The master bedroom is clearly superior in both space and amenities with an excellent view of Hana Bay. It has a king size bed and a substantial private lanai with lounge chairs and tables. It directly accesses the master bath which has a soak tub/ shower and excellent counter space. Closet and drawer space are more than adequate.

As there is a considerable difference between the two bedrooms in this unit, it may raise contentions with regard to who gets what bedroom. Settle this issue up front and then enjoy this fabulous peaceful hideaway. Leave the pressures behind, kick back and enjoy. Eat in and enjoy a view that few restaurants will ever provide. While we were in unit 5, two other couples traveling with us stayed in units 1 and 2. Both units were beautiful. Unit 1 was a studio and had a large lanai. Just the same, everyone migrated to unit 5 for its space, kitchen and top floor view.

This place is truly special. If you rent it, take care of it so that it remains available. Thanks to its owners for sharing.

Room Tip: The single digit units (1,2,3,4 and 5) have the best unobstructed views of Hana Bay. Units 4 and 5...

Hana Kai is a condo consisting of 2 separate buildings. It has a very nice location right on the ocean. The front building is closer the the ocean and the back building is slightly up the hill. I chose #202 Alau which is in the back building on the 2nd level. The view from this room is very nice and minimally obscured by the lower building. The condo was nicely appointed and had a large lanai. I had interactions with 2 office staff and both were very helpful and kind. The only drawback is some noise between the units. I definitely didn't need any air conditioning or TV. This is a place to rest and relax and I would definitely stay here again.
