“Simply Amazing…Quiet and Relaxing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

After deciding we wanted to stay the night in Hana, we found there weren't too many affordable options. That being said, Hana Kai, is relatively affordable and well appointed. The condo style apartments are well appointed and extremely relaxing and quiet. We stayed in the studio #106 which was quite large with a very large sized bathroom/dressing area, which came with Hawaiian made bath products.. The unit had a nice comfortable bed, adequately stocked kitchen with coffee maker and a fantastic lanai, which we ate breakfast and dinner on.

The room had a surprisingly great view of the ocean, but more than the view was the sounds of that water. We slept with the screen open (since there is no AC, but it is not needed) and were put to sleep by the sounds of the ocean, with the cool breeze. The grounds had koi ponds, a well kept yard and led directly to the ocean.

We loved everything about Hana Kai and would stay there again in an instant. I can't express enough how absolutely calming this place can be.

Note - We were charged a $15 service charge for staying less than 2 nights. Staying at least a night in Hana is highly recommended.

Room Tip: Both the front and back buildings have views of the water but the front buildings have much better v...

The room was comfortable and worked well for the one night we stayed in Hana. The bed was comfortable, bathroom clean with a nice open shower. There was a small kitchen and the lanai was nice with a large table and chairs. We were in the back building and did not have much of a beach view but we knew that when we booked. The grounds were very nice with a three tiered koi pond and lots of beautiful plants. The hotel is right on the beach and we enjoyed a morning stroll. Hana is such a relaxing place. We felt like we took a vacation from our vacation while we were there.

Room Tip: There are a variety of rooms. Check their website.

My husband and I stayed in unit 107 for one night. The check in process was efficient and simple. Our room was clean and well-appointed. We had a limited view of the black sand beach, but could easily hear the soothing sounds of the ocean all night long. The check-out process was simple. However, after our return drive over the Hana Highway, I had received a voice message on my cell phone accusing my husband and I of possibly putting 2 bath towels in our luggage or trunk of the car. Upon returning the phone call, I had discovered that they had already charged us for the "missing" towels, even though they had never spoken with us about this. They insisted that they had confirmed with the housekeeper and the housekeeping supervisor that 4 towels had been left in our bathroom. When we arrived, there were only 2 towels of each size. I would have never expected to have more than this for an overnight stay. Eventually the charges were reversed. However, for me the damage was already done. This experience left me with a negative feeling about Hana Kai Maui.

There is little to say except to apologize for this instance. At times, as management we make a judgement call, this one coming after several instances of items missing from our rooms and rethinking our policies a bit. Charging for missing items before confirming with the guest was a mistake but in hindsight even calling a guest at all in this circumstance was awkward at best. Thank you for letting us know; we learned a lesson on this one~

We stayed for one night in room 204. Everything about the hotel was great. The view, the set up of the rooms, the lanai, the breeze, and the fully stocked kitchen. We walked to the Ranch Store, less than a mile, I think, and bought what we needed for dinner and breakfast the next day. We also walked to Hana Bay. We tried to find the Red Sand Beach, but it was too scary. Anyway, we loved everything about the Hana Kai Maui, and hope to return for a longer stay. It is the perfect place to rest after driving the Road to Hana, and it will recharge your batteries to drive the rest of the way. Thanks

I researched quite a bit to find accommodation suitable for a family of 4 in Hana. There isn't a great variety but we were really pleased with our choice. This 'hotel' is a collection of studio apartment-type of accomodation. We chose the most expensive option (cabin 3) closest to the beach. It was perfect for 2 adults and 2 young children (aged 6 and 7). We were able to stay 2 nights which was good. We bought food for breakfast and snacks on the drive to Hana (in Paia) as there is no restaurant that I could see. We had dinner at the Ranch Restaurant which was great and very close by. There was also 1 or 2 general stores in Hana with basic supplies.
Really glad we did this drive and visited the Seven Sacred pools just past Hana.

Room Tip: Choose a room closet to the ocean with the best views

I was really nervous about this place but was so happy to find that it was a lovely accommodation with a true Aloha feeling. The reviews are true - the rooms are all different so I'll speak for the one we stayed in, Hana Kai 204: “Waiohinu”. While the views are surely better in the shoreside building, we could still see the ocean and more importantly, we could hear it. The room was very clean with a really comfortable bed, the bathroom was clean with lovely bath products, and we loved being so unplugged - no TV and I can't remember if we could get wifi or not. It reminded me of trips to "the cabin" when I lived in the midwest. The walls are thin, but when we were there, the only noise we heard was around 8-9pm when people were having dinner and drinks on the lanais...but there wasn't any noise when we were sleeping. We left the screen door open and listened to the waves all night - it was beautiful. This is not a high-touch service experience - you can be left alone and enjoy the quiet and solitude. It isn't cheap, but it is far more reasonable than the alternative. We wished we had booked more than one night. We would definitely stay again, perhaps choosing a room with a view this time.

Room Tip: Look at the photos and read reviews of specific rooms, they are not collectively managed. Views are...

We stayed in Unit 203. The view of the black sand beach was spectacular. The room was as shown on the website but starting to show signs of wear up close. Wood rot must be difficult to prevent given the weather and lack of air conditioning. The rooms were always comfortable in temperature. We enjoyed listening to the ocean through open windows. The kitchen was well equipped but could use new pans. We cooked the whole time. Would stay here again when going to Hana.

Unit #203 is one of our most popular units. The owner takes great care of this apartment. Yes, we are in quite a challenging environment....something like maintaining a boat! Our buildings are redwood and built in 1971. Over the past 6 years we have renovated most of our units and completely refurbished the exteriors of both buildings. We are constantly repairing and repainting and this unit has had the once over since your stay with us. Thank you for choosing Hana Kai Maui for your stay in Hana.
