We spent the second week of our honeymoon at Travaasa after a stay at the Ritz in Kapalua on the west side of Maui. We loved our stay here! After the more crowded commercial side of the island, the atmosphere in Hana is much more relaxed and laid-back.
We were actually booked for a garden suite at Travaasa, but they upgraded us to a ranch cottage with an ocean view and it was gorgeous! Our room was stocked with a coffee grinder, coffeepot, small refrigerator, complimentary coffee and bottled water (refreshed daily), and the standard hotel toiletries. There was a garden tub and separate tiled walk-in shower in the bathroom. There is no A/C in the Travaasa rooms, but do not let this frighten you. It is stated on the hotel website, and we found A/C to be unnecessary. The cool tropical breeze is more than enough to cool the rooms. We were there the last week of September. One thing of note - the mattress in our room was very thin. My husband and I both have back problems so this is something we always notice during travel. If I could make one suggestion to the hotel, it would be to add pillow toppers to the mattresses to soften them a bit. After staying our first week at the Ritz, we noticed the mattress right away. There is a washer & dryer on the property also, which we made use of during our stay. Wifi is only available in the lobby. The spa amenities (sauna, outdoor pool) are wonderful, and it did not seem to be very busy during our stay so we enjoyed the spa in relative seclusion. The jacuzzi by the main pool overlooking the ocean was one of our favorite places to relax.
Travaasa guests should note that there are only 2 restaurants available in Hana, one at the hotel, and the Hana Ranch Restaurant, a short walk from the property. Both are very pricey, and we noticed only 1 dish changed daily on the hotel dinner menu. So if you are there for any length of time, you may want to consider purchasing snacks or other groceries for some variation, and to save on your food bill which can quickly become very expensive. We were quoted $500 per person a day to add a meal plan with vouchers for activities at the hotel. One dish in particular I enjoyed was the spiced fish tacos on the lunch menu. Guests should also be aware that the "non-tipping" policy quoted by the hotel is somewhat misleading. You don't tip the porters, but the restaurant staff do receive tips, and the ranch staff as well if you book horseback riding activities.
We didn't participate in any of the yoga activities but the horseback riding was amazing! Our instructor Jolinn (I hope I spelled that right), a Hana local, is a font of knowledge about the island and we enjoyed talking with her immensely.
We highly recommend the Travaasa to anyone and have already decided that if we return to Maui, we will skip the east side of the island and go back to Hana.

P.s.- Please don’t skip the East side of the island. That’s where we are!
