Well, having read some of the negative reviews in this site, I must admit I was a little bit apprehensive about staying at this hotel, after we decided not to do the usual Kaanapali thing. We live in Hawai'i and were taking our first trip on the Superferry and driving our own car, a Miata (with the top down) over that amazing Road to Hana. When we got there, however, I was delighted in the extreme! I think it's safe to say that this hotel meets or exceeds all expectations for a place that gives you solitude, seclusion, luxury and a perfect Hawaiian visit. I do think, after looking the place over and having read some of the more negative remarks, that they must have been limited to the people who stayed in the "Sea Cottage" rooms. Where the rooms in the main part of the hotel are beautifully landscaped, the ones at the Sea Cottage area looked as if they had been plunked down in the middle of an open plain. We were very happy with our "Garden Suite," which included a large bedroom, a very large sitting room and one of the best bathrooms I've ever found in a hotel. A deep, relaxing tub, a stand alone shower with a very nice, strong shower head, and a completely isolated toilet. In fact, it's one of the most luxurious hotel bathrooms I've ever discovered. The lanai was really a great place to relax, with a nice table and chairs and a great view of the ocean. I really loved the fact that everywhere in our little area of the hotel the landscaping was so lush it was hard to see if there was anyone in the lanai next door. We also found clever little nooks where chaise longues had been placed, surrounded by the same lush vegetation which allowed you to relax in total privacy and enjoy the veiw.
As for the food and service, it was all first rate, four star, perhaps even five star quality. Our server for both the nights we were there for dinner was Laura, who knew her food and wines and was very nice about giving us the information we needed to make our dinners just perfect. The breakfast buffet was also quite wonderful, especially the fresh fruits, fresh juices, etc.
The night we arrived (July 4) the dining room had a very nice buffet, which made it nice because the next night featured their usual menu, so it made for more varied fare. They also featured a show which included local people singing and doing the hula. As Hawai'i residents, we usually try to avoid these things because they're usually the same old packaged format in all of the major hotels. We were, happily, pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the evening's entertainment, it all being provided by "real" Hawaiians with a definite love for their art.
We didn't sample much more of the services offered, mainly wanting to just relax and take it easy, so I can't comment on the spa, the horseback riding, etc., but I do think it would be easy to spend more time here and try to get to know about all the offerings of this truly top of the line hotel.
There is just so much more I could mention but this is already a book similar to "War and Peace." This is definitely a place to go to "get away from it all" and enjoy nature, superb service and food, and just to take it easy. Highest recommendation!
