“Great home cooking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012 via mobile

We had a great dinner here, enjoyed the relaxed but attentive service and nice meals. Was pretty stuffed from dinner (great burgers and grilled fish) but made room for their superb homemade brownie - yum! Definitely a locals place, but they also make tourists feel welcome.

“Unique and Friendly Eatery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

This is primarily a place for local patrons. While it does hold the title of the "most southern restaurant in the United States", Hana Hou doesn't get that many tourists as it is quite off the beaten path. If you do find this simple restaurant on Haiku Road you will be welcomed warmly by the friendly staff, including the owner, who makes a point to make strangers feels at home.
It is not the food that distinguishes Hana Hou Cafe (not even the baked goods for which they are known) but rather it is the aloha spirit you will feel when you eat there.

This is an older eating establishment - no frills at all - you have to leave the building to visit the bathroom. The linoleum on the floor is cracked, the formica on the tables is chipped and the vinyl chairs are ripped. The restaurant harkens back to the 1960's; sort of a Hawaiian diner type of place.

The bakery cases hold delectable desserts.....provided that you go early enough to enjoy them. By dinner time most of these desserts were sold out, including the Macadamia Cream pie for which they are famous. The very gracious owner offered my family of 5 free "ices" for dessert. They were similar to "Italian ices", without the sweet flavor. For dinner, my husband had the grilled cheese sandwich which we all found quite curious as it contained no cheese. In fact, it was more of a salad sandwich than grilled cheese. I had the fish and chips, also different from what one would expect, with a tangy cole slaw. Other family members enjoyed the pork sandwich. Prices were very reasonable and the portions were generous.

We went on a Friday night and they were hosting an 50 year anniversary party of about 20 people. The staff went out of their way to make this local couple feel like celebrities on their special day - and that was so heartwarming. We were the only tourists in the place yet we were welcomed and made to feel as if we belonged. The three man band played familiar, typical tunes that the crowd truly enjoyed. It was a wonderful evening for us and the local people who obviously enjoy this quaint little place brimming with aloha spirit.

An outdoor restaurant with good food and music. The food was wonderful and individually prepared, but a moderate price.

“A pleasant surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2012

While in the Haiku area for a few nights we ended up coming here twice, each time having a seafood preparation that was the evening's special. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but has varied and interesting entertainment six nights a week. I have to say our specials were at a level that would pass muster in much more pretentious establishments. The owners appear to be a French ex-pat and his wife, who evidently have a good concept of food preparation. I can't speak for the rest of the menu, but the specials were actually special. We were pleasantly surprised on our first visit, which is why we came back for another go, perhaps the best recommendation of all.
