“A tropical oasis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013

As you drive down Kokomo Rd, you will be surrounded by tall bamboo plants, coconut trees and other tropical plants.
We stayed in the Bamboo cottage in April. It has lots of windows and is very comfortable. The breakfast is as described on the web site--a sweet baked bread, such as apple or banana, yogurt, a bagel or English muffin. And best of all the fruit--a papaya filled with berries and fresh pineapple, what a great way to start the day.
Take time to wander the grounds, you will see many varieties of plants and trees. It was pleasant just to sit outdoors and listen to the birds.
Benny is a wonderful hostess. Our plans changed and we called to see if we could check in early; she called me back as soon as our room was ready so that we could arrive early. It was very interesting to talk to her about the history of the house and the grounds. She has lived there for many years and is knowledgable about the island.
This is a lovely lodging. It is close enough to the airport , Paia and Hana, but is a peaceful place to relax.

We were looking forward to our stay here after reading the reviews and looking st the b&b's website. Unfortunately this turned out to be the poorest place we stayed in during our stay on the Hawaiian islands.
On arrival we went to the main house and met Benni, our room wasn't ready so we asked for advise of what to do, see as our planned trip was cancelled due to the weather. Benni seemed disinterested and spent about 20mins talking to two guests that were checking out of our room while we waited awkwardly.
As we didn't get much help we left to explore for the day. We returned in the evening and went to our room (bamboo suite).
There was no tv but we had free wifi. There was also free wifi, pc and printer in the main house we could use. Beach chairs, snorkelling equipment were available to use.
We had a small kitchenette with breakfast items already provided and each morning fruit, cakes, bagels were delivered to our door so we could eat in our room.
The bathroom was a wet room type shower which meant that the whole bathroom would get wet as there was no barrier on the floor to stop the water from getting everywhere. There was also little storage space or surfaces to leave toiletries.
We were there during the wetter season and the air was damp so our bath towels wouldn't dry in our rooms. Towels weren't changed each day, we had to ask which was difficult to do (read further).
The room was also disappointing due to the bed frame being too big for the mattress so they had stuffed a number of pillows at one end of the bed to try to keep the mattress in place. I would suggest they provide a bed and mattress that fit together as it made sleeping uncomfortable.
Two smaller bed side tables and a larger bed would make the stay for two adults more comfortable.
Worst of all was the room was very dirty. The ceiling fans in the room and bathroom had not been dusted in a long time so we couldn't turn them on to cool us down as we didn't want to blow dust all around the room, this made our sleeping more uncomfortable as there was no air con in the room. Looking around the room it hadn't been dusted in a long time, the window blinds, lamps, picture frames, under the bed were all every dusty.
Also Benni was very hard to find if you had any questions. We went into the main house a couple of times and called out but she didn't come out. The 2nd time we had to knock on her "private" door, which she then answered. We asked for new towels which we gave us. I believe she left a note in our room with a number we could call if we had questions but there was no telephone in the room. This would mean we would have to use our personal mobiles to make an international (expensive!) call to ask basic things. I think a better system should be set up so guests can find Benni to ask for help etc.
The only good thing we could say about this b&b is that it was close to the main town that had a good choice of restaurants and shops and a good base for exploring the island. We would not stay here again.

I'm very sorry that your stay was disappointing, but I really appreciate you bringing the problems to our attention. We have made several changes to address your concerns. We have a new cleaning staff and the dust you discussed has been taken care of. We also have replaced the bed in the Bamboo Suite with a new custom made bed and headboard that is very comfortable.

But of course your main concern was with my behavior. I really do try to make all the guests feel welcome and to be as helpful as I can. This time I obviously fell short. Thank you for reminding me that the "call me if you need anything" policy doesn't work well with international guests who can't make free cell phone calls.

Again, thank you for taking the time to bring these matters to my attention so that I can improve the service we offer our guests.

Aloha, Benni

My wife have stayed in the Meadow cottage with our 18 months old son for about 10 days. We were really happy with our choice - the cottage is located conveniently - we could access beaches on the North- as well as South-shore easily and we really enjoyed the ability to use the well suited kitchen and BBQ.
I highly recommend this cottage for families or anybody who has access to a rental car and likes sleeping in the not-so-crowded area of Maui.

Although we arrived late in the evening after a short drive from the airport we were warmly greeted. The house is just as lovely as on the website and spotless; the gardens exquisite, the bed comfortable. Waking to the birdsong on a fresh morning was a magical experience. Like Camelot, I understand it only rains after sundown.

We enjoyed our breakfasts on the lanai, had a wonderful day at the volcano. The next day, when we found there had been a mixup in the time we had to be in Lahaina for a medical appointment, Benni could not have been more helpful.

To think I almost picked an airport hotel!

We stayed two nights before heading to the beachside condo. 3 nights would have been better and a whole honeymoon could happily be spent here. As much privacy or company as you want. Weather not too hot or cold. Not too far from where you want to go and still feel like you are out in the country. Everything just right and a perfect introduction to Hawaii.

Room Tip: We were very happy with our sunrise room in the house but honeymooners might appreciate the addition...

I stumbled upon the Haiku Cannery Inn while searching for a place to stay in Maui for my husbands R & R after deployment. We could not be happier that we did. Benni greeted us upon our afternoon arrival to show us around our Bamboo Suite. The Suite was very clean and well appointed. We left the windows open our entire visit. The sound of the bamboo, trees, and birds outside the window was so relaxing. I slept better our 3 nights there than I have in years.

Breakfast each morning was great. Fresh fruit, baked goods, yogurt and a pantry with coffees, teas, and cereals. The mini fridge had milk, creamer, and juice. My husband is a big breakfast eater and he was also more than pleased and was enough to hold him over until lunch. There were even left overs most mornings that we would take along on our day trips.

The location was ideal for us. Great jumping off point for the Road to Hana (Ms Benni also had a Road to Hana CD that we borrowed for the day, just ask) and to see the sunrise at Haleakala National Park. There are 2 nice beaches within a short drive- Baldwin Park and Hookipa Park. 2 beach chairs and 2 beach towels were in the Suite for us to use. Driving into Lahaina one day made us realize how grateful we were to be staying in such a quiet, peaceful, relaxing place.

My husband and I enjoyed talking to Ms Benni and all the wonderful stories she had to share with us. We truly hope to go back someday and will highly recommend Haiku Cannery Inn to anyone we know heading to Maui.

Room Tip: Loved the private Bamboo Suite

This was our second visit to the historic Haiku Cannery Inn B&B. This is a convenient location for many adventures: head off to Hana, drive up the mountain to the Haleakala National Park, visit nearby Makawao, take a picnic excursion to the Tedeschi Winery, make the short drive into Paia town, and more. The Inn offers a range of accommodation options from a smaller bedroom to a whole house. Benni serves up a delicious island style breakfast with fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, and scones. Wake up to birds chirping in a tropical setting. The front porch of the main house has an ocean view in the distance and is a serene spot for breakfast or a glass of wine at the end of the day. We shall return to this Inn on our next trip to Maui.

Benni offered a warm, welcoming greeting on arrival. The inn is in a lush tropical, peaceful location. The common areas are spacious, clean and comfortable. We made good use of the pantry area with morning coffee, tea, scones, banana bread and delicious papaya, strawberries and pineapple. We enjoyed breakfast on the porch even while it rained as it left stunning rainbows, even some doubles. It doesn't get much better than this!
On our next visit we will choose a larger room near the front of the inn. We stayed in the Malia room which was very nice, but the bed was small and without a headboard which made sleeping uncomfortable. Also, being at the rear near parking, the room lacks privacy with other guests coming and going. Super internet access, watched the Super Bowl. We will be back!

Room Tip: Choose a large room near the front of the inn or stay in the cottage in the rear.
