“Excellent service, nice low key spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

Everyone says Lanai is not a "pretty" island, and that is true. Almost no trees or vegetation. If you have never been to Hawaii or want the lush Kauai look, this is not for you. If you want quiet, read on the beach and do nothing, it might be just right. Read up on Larry Ellison and his plans for the island, interesting.
There truly is little exciting to do, but that is just what we wanted. Jeep rental is interesting for one day, but other than the road to the old Club Lanai, not that interesting but worth it. They may tell you roads are closed, but ask around about conditions, we went anyway and it was fine. We did not drive Munro Trail so not sure if that is drivable or not, heard very conflicting reports so didnt do it. Better to hike it maybe. Town is bizarrely interesting, but you are done in 6 minutes. Check out the old jail. Eat at the Lanaii City Grill (best meal we had) and see the old hotel it is housed in. You would swear Sadie Thompson had been there. Eat at one or two of the little "local" spots, food is not great but a nice change from the Four Seasons, not to mention very inexpensive. don't need a car as hotel shuttles you everywhere.
Food at the hotel was a bit disappointing, that might be my only caveat. Not bad, but we are very spoil in that regard.
As for the hotel, it is being renovated, but as of today parts do still look a tad dated, but very well maintained. Lobby is done and lovely. Rooms very large, will be redone shortly. Do not get a room on the left side near the pool restaurant...you may have a partial ocean view but mostly you look at and hear the restaurant machinery.
Everyone knows about the dolphins! One day there must have been 150, fun to swim with them. Tons of whales if you are there in season. Walk the fishermans trail, look at the ruins, they dot the shoreline and give your stroll a purpose! Tennis is more of an afterthought, golf course looked great! Bill Gates was married on the 12th tee, so you can imagine the view.
There really is almost nothing on the island in the way of stores...so don't forget anything. The helpful concierges can get a runner to go to Maui if you really need something, but other than two tiny grocery stores, and the small Four Seasons gift shop, that is it. I hear the hotel spa has a gift shop too, but didn't go in.
We wanted a quiet relaxing trip, and it was just that. Service was very good, as FS usually is! They never say they can't do something for you, they just figure out how. What a refreshing concept! But course, we never asked for crazy things, just fish tacos at the beach, which are on the pool menu, not the beach menu, for example, but no problem, yes! The small things made it nice...free snacks delivered to your chairs and cold lemonade dispensed at the beach, bottles of sunscreen too. Footballs to borrow. Pool and shuffleboard in the bar. Just enough to do. Very nice trip. Oh and a tip! If you buy the FS travel mug for coffee in the breakfast bar, unlimited refills your entire stay!

This is our third visit, so we like it. It is a 45 minute boat ride from Lahaina, and when you arrive it is a different world. Fewer of us tourists, and no T shirt shops in sight. A bus gives you a lift from the harbor to the hotel, where you are greeted at the entrance to the hotel by a staff member who gives you a welcome drink and escorts you directly to your room. The grounds are beautiful, and all of the staff our friendly. We ate at all of the onsite restaurants; they are all excellent and markedly different. At lunch by the pool we saw spinner dolphins putting on a Seaworld type show in the open bay. Some lucky snorklers were out swimming with wild dolphins. Our room was large, with a large bathroom with separate tub and shower. The public areas are spectacular.

Room Tip: In the past we stayed in a ocean front room, spectacular view during day, but no white water view du...

Aloha sgs312,

Mahalo for taking the time to review your February stay with us and for sharing such great feedback. The island, which has just two resorts - both of which Four Seasons, is definitely an escape from the everyday. As mentioned, there are no chain restaurants or even stop lights, so guests can truly relax and experience Hawaii the way it was meant to be - pristine, natural and charming. I appreciate your comments regarding the beautiful grounds, friendly staff and the variety of restaurants. We recently opened Nobu Lanai - the first Nobu in a Four Seasons, which has been a very welcomed addition for guests to enjoy. Thank you again for your review, I have shared your experience with our team members.

Warmest aloha,

A perfect hotel in a perfect setting. Excellent staff, wonderful cuisine beautiful scenery with a beautiful small beach. Breakfast on the patio overlooking the waterfalls with the ocean in the background was spectacular. And the blueberry muffins were the lightest and most flavorful.
The structure of the hotel facing the sea allows the trade winds to waft through the rooms creating a delightful atmosphere. What could be bad ?

My wife and I have traveled extensively for both work and pleasure, domestically and abroad, and the Four Seasons Manele Bay might be the single best destination spot we've ever been to. An absolutely superb spot to simply relax, and an equally good one if you want to get out and explore. For those of you reading the reviews that suggest there might not be enough to do on Lana'i, forget them. I could have stayed for weeks and found myself contented every day with something new. With the the reviewer below that suggested the snorkeling is better in Manele Bay than on many chartered snorkel tours, I would agree. We have been to the Big Island three times and Maui twice, and the resort beach at Manele was some of the best snorkeling I've ever experienced, and I'm 51 and have been a certified diver since I the age of 15. We went to Molokini the same week and it was a poor cousin to the resort's reef. The beach is wide and empty and relaxing and everything you'd expect from a beach. The only beach I've seen in Hawai'i that compares is either Hapuna or Makena.

You will get at Manele Bay all that you expect from a Four Seasons - superb service and a spectacular facility. The views are simply awesome from virtually anywhere. We took advantage of everything in the hotel from the game rooms to the teen lounge and all the little nooks and crannies. A truly first-class resort. We also wandered up to Koele twice which was equally nice and also an awesome facility. My kids (ages 12 and 9) loved the 18 hole putting course. We played it twice. Swimming with the dolphins was an exceptional experience. Every restaurant was superb and I didn't think all that expensive, certainly less expensive than Maui resort restaurants and on a par with what you'll find on the Big Island or Oahu. We tired of nothing. I could have eaten at Nobu every night. The ability to go upcountry and visit Koele was a huge plus and a fun and interesting change of pace. Take advantage if you go.

When you visit Lanai you have the feeling of having the entire island to yourself, and I thought that was the best part of our stay. We got up early one morning, rented a jeep and drove to Shipwreck Beach. The drive was beautiful with spectacular views of Moloka'i and Maui. We probably got to the beach at around 10am. It is possible we were the only people within a ten mile radius at that time. The whale show we got looking from the beach to Moloka'i was not to be believed. Lana'i City is quaint and worth visiting. Alot like Hawi but not quite Paia or Makawao.

My family tries to get to Hawai'i for two weeks every winter break. As indicated, we have been to the Big Island and Maui multiple times. This was our first time to Lana'i. As far as I am concerned, there is no better place to go on the Islands. We are debating where to go for next year already. I will lose, but I would vote to stay at Manele Bay for the full two weeks next year. Do not deny yourself a stay here - you will regret it. Take advantage of everything Lana'i offers. It is a special place.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view, it is well worth it.

This resort and it's staff absolutely raise the bar when it comes to attentive service. What an all around fabulous facility and location. This is THE place to go to relax and download. It is not inexpensive, however the hotel delivers good value for the price. The resort gains a lot in the way of charm by virtue of the many local's they have on staff. Our bartender Anthony was a particular gem! The regular free shuttle to Lanai city is a nice break and a charming place to visit and shop for quality artwork. The passenger ferry to Maui is also convenient and can offer a change of pace. Dolphins come right up into the bay at times and you can literally swim with them. Snorkeling and diving are fantastic. The beach is lovely as is the pool and even the lawns where they have comfortable furniture set about. Service is outstanding! We loved it here and felt sad to leave.

I will share your praise with Anthony, he's just one of our many outstanding team members that deliver genuine aloha and charm to our guests on a daily basis. We have been to Hawaii two times and both times spent our time in Maui. This trip was an experience on Lanai and it was very special. The island has a small town and two large Four Season resorts. The Four Season experience was as you would expect. Terrific food, extraordinary service and attention to detail. The pool attendants are very attentive and wear T Shirts indicating their service: Dr. Spritz, Dr. Shades. The beach is beautiful and you must take advantage of yoga on the beach to see the sun rise. Don't get too many opportunities like this! The snorkeling at the resort beach is out of this world and actually better than our experience on a sail boat on snorkeling day trip. To get the full experience of the island I recommend renting a jeep or going on an organized jeep tour. The golf here is out of this world and you will be taking pictures so much you will not be worrying about your game. I highly recommend this very special piece of heaven on earth!!

Room Tip: Some rooms don't have a clear ocean view. We requested a move and had no issues.
