I went to the four seasons @ manele bay in August. I am from a somewhat moderate income family, so this was actually the first time I ever stayed at a hotel like the four seasons, let alone the four seasons itself. So I was expecting something I had never experienced before. I did not expect to be treated so badly that I would feel safe to say that I had better service, as well as overall a better and less expensive experience, at a three star hotel in Cancun or Dominican Republic (GO OASIS CANCUN, YOU BEAT FOUR SEASONS... yea that bad)
I would say my main complaint was the food. One of many, but if I had to say what upset me the most it was probably that. First of all, the food is INCREDIBLY expensive. Like insanely. If you order room service for two, it will be $100+. I mean, okay, I get its the four seasons and things will be pricey... I wouldn't have even been upset about it if the food was good. But then, whiel you are paying them $100 dollars, you are getting crappy, pre-frozen food. I kid you not. After a few experiments (by experiments, I mean I tried... fish, i mean its hawaii, you'd think it would be edible... or ribs, which they claim they marinate for days. All disgusting, I couldn't even eat it. I fed it to the turkeys. It was sickening), i discovered the only somewhat decent thing on the menu was their burger. So yes, on my nice special trip, all I could bring myself to eat was burgers. I'm not even saying they were great, just not disgusting - and somewhat cheaper than anything else. Furthermore, the kids food is just NASTY. Like I really think they charge you $10-$20 dollars for kids meals, which I am REALLY sure are Chef-Boy-Ardee (however you spell that), and Kraft Mac and Cheese stuff. Like, its not just bad so I'm comparing it to that, im relatively sure that is precisely what they serve. Alphabet soup, etc, all straight out of a can. A $10 can. Want to ad a sprite to that? $7 a can. It was crazy. I ended up buying a 12 pack of sprite, and beer, from the town, and dragging it all the way back to my hotel because I was so annoyed. I also tried to buy food in the town, and that wroked out well. Go to the poke place, it is amazing. If i ever go back here, which I doubt I EVER EVER will (Oasis here I come), I would eat every meal for breakfast lunch and dinner there. It looks like a dirty dingy shack, but they were acutally amazing, maybe I will write a review for them next because they try hard, are reasonably priced, and actually produce amaZing food.
The next thing that upset me - the staff. They staff is the most rude, passive agressive group of "five star" hotel employees I could possibly imagine. I've never been ANYWHERE, like even Motel 8 or something, where they treat you so rudely. I think the people there hate to serve you, and they make it pretty clear. I don't like being treated this way, but what upset me even more was how incredibly neglectful and rude they were to my son traveling with us. When they weren't completely ignoring him and acting like he was invisible, they were downright hostile. What in the world? If a hotel cannot train their staff to treat children at least in a civil manner, they shoudl make it adults only. It was appalling. He was miserable the entire time. What a waste of a trip, for all people involved, and kids are not even that hard to please (on that note - he was fine with the nasty Kraft mac and cheese type food, it was me who was annoyed I was paying $10 for a plate worth 10 cents).
NEXT - the room. The maids were really neglectful. They left garbage and sand all over the place. Im on vacation, so I normally don't like to spend time cleaning up after myself, as awful as that may sound, but I feel like if you are spending a ton of money to stay somewhere, you should be able to be a little messy and have it taken care of. Not the case here. They would make the bed (with sand in it), not sweep any sand off anywhere, leave anything in the room that was there (old food, drinks, etc), it was really bizarre.
Now, I will say this. IT IS BEAUTIFUL. I have never been anywhere as beautiful. The views are amazing, the hikes nearby are amazing. I loved it. I can still picture it. The view from my room was spectacular. The stars at night at like nothing I've seen in my life. I was mystified. I would sit there for an hour at night just looking at the sky, which the rest of my company found a little weird, but I couldn't get over it. So, it is very scenic, and nice, but this hotel is totally incompetent and a rip off. Lastly, I will give them credit where it is due. They have edible breakfast (super expensive, but decent food)
PS - There is a campground on the beach at the bottom of the hill from the hotel. If you want beauty, but not excessive amounts of money for a cheap trashy hotel, go to the campground and suck it up. You will be better off buying food from the city and grilling it anyway, you won't have to pay an absurd amount of money for nasty food. Get a nice tent... you don't get a nice kept room at the hotel anyway ,so why bother? Next time, I will be staying here, rather than going back to the knarley place.
