Just returned from a 10 night stay at the 4S Manele Bay.
Expedition Ferry: The 45 minute ferry ride to/from Lahaina can be a long, painful experience for those who get seasick. The ride over to Lanai was very choppy with winds blowing in the 20-25 mph range and several riders were "feeding the fish". I must admit, I came close but made it. Going back to Lahaina it was early morning and calm and everyone seemed to make it ok. The ferry holds about 60 people and really seemed to me to be too small for that crossing but the staff was nice. Cost is $26 each way and it runs approx. 6 times a day. Overall, if you're not a boat person you'll hate this leg of the trip I can assure you. The alternative is to fly into Lanai City from Honolulu.
Level of Service: One word. Excellent. Check in/out was easy. Staff was always great, friendly, attentive. Housekeeping, waitstaff, etc always prompt and gracious. Couldn't ask for anything better. Shuttle drivers/doormen are cool. Say hello to Steve from Oregon. Shuttle drive is about 1/2 mile to Challenge golf course and about 30 minutes to Koele along winding road.
Room: I had the standard room (Starfish 2707). I was a bit disappointed in my room actually. I was expecting more of a "Wow" factor. Instead it was just a standard room. King bed, marble bath, small balcony. Plasma tv but not HD. It was actually analog and had poor channels. Since I didn't spend much time in my room it didn't matter much but be warned. Housekeeping was always prompt in cleaning my room and turndown service each night was predictable. Overall the room was fine.
Pool/Beach: The best part of the hotel in my opinion is the salt water pool. The first 5 days that I was there, the pool and hotel in general was empty. It was great. The second 5 days the families started to arrive for the Xmas week and it got more crowded. Still, never had to fight for a chair or anything. Just more screaming kids than I would have liked. It would be nice if there was a kids pool. As for the beach, it was really rocky and had a pretty strong rip current so I stayed at the pool. Dolphins were in the bay on several days and for some reason that gets people all excited. Service at the pool was incredible at all times. Towels, food, drinks, you name it. They will bring it over. Again, best part of the hotel in my opinion. Oh yeah, and the pool is heated. It has two jacuzzis and is heated to the perfect temp (approx. 70). Perfect.
Food/Restaurants: This is probably the one major drawback to this resort. Because you are a captive audience you are forced to eat your meals at the hotel and that can be expensive. I took advantage of the buffet each morning in the Hulopo'e Court. It's wonderful albeit expensive. For instance, if you just order off the menu it $6 for a glass of juice and $9 for a couple pastries. If you get the all you can eat buffet its $31 but could fill you up so you don't have to eat until dinner. Lunch was always at the Oceal Grill (Poolside). Its like a tiki hut kinda' bar with good food and spectacular views of the bay. Again pricey. $17 chicken caesar wraps, $16 calamari salads, $6 coors lites. Say hello to Warren and Loren the bartenders. My beer never got half way empty before they offered me another. I miss sitting there each day having a few drinks and chatting about life with them and enjoying the view. Life was good.
Golf/Activities: I picked Lanai specifically to play the two golf courses and they didn't disappoint. The Challenge was incredible. Absolutely everything that I could have asked for. Stunning. I payed $130/round which was a discount because they were working on some traps on the front nine or something. I never noticed anything but it was nice to save money. The Experience at Koele was $190/round and I certainly didn't see what all the fuss was about. It's a nice course albeit really hard and for $190 I was in no hurry to play it twice. One thing to note that I didn't like was the range. They charged my $10 to hit balls at the range. They will credit you if you then play a round of golf but you just can't go hit balls to kill some time during the day. For $500/night for a room it would have been nice if that was free. I felt like that was cheap especially after I had already played the courses so they had gotten another $500 from me in greens fees already. Other resorts would have just said go ahead and hit all you want. I didn't take advantage of the horseback riding, skeet shooting or anything else primarily because it means getting in the shuttle and it was too much of a hassel.
Summary: This is a great hotel and the staff is 4Seasons all the way. I would highly recommend it for a 3-4 day stay. But unless you really really like to be alone it's a boring place. I wished that I had stayed over on Maui longer just because I found myself kinda bored since its basically eat, swim, eat, golf, eat swim, sleep. There isn't much else to do. Lanai City is more like a small road, albeit friendly people it's boring. Same with the Lodge at Koele. It's really pretty but not much going on. Lanai itself is an incredible island. I was amazed at how desert-like it was especially as you go inland. It reminded me of New Mexico or Arizona. Flat, brown, dry and then you would pine trees planted that looked out of place. Cliffs that extend down to ocean with incredible views for 180 degress. Absolutely incredible and a place that I'm glad that I experienced. Would I return? Probably not. There is no reason to. In my opinion you can get a similar level of beauty/relaxation on Maui/Oahu without having to take that ferry ride over. It really is a pain having to take it. The weather was absolutely perfect for the entire length of my stay. Not one single drop of rain and frankly hardly a cloud. Manele Bay's location is one of the dryest in the entire Hawaiian island chain and although it had rained hard the weak before, it was a historic rain event. They only get like 10" a year and they got all of it that week. My week and a half it was perfect. Go to Manele Bay for the guaranteed weather, the golf, and the relaxation. Don't go there for anything else. You can find everything else on Maui and it's easier to get to.
